What are the types of lung cancer?
The lung is a vital organ in the respiratory system, responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. It is divided into two main parts: the left lung and the right lung. Each lung is further divided into lobes. The structure of the lung includes bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli, where the exchange of gases takes place.
Lung cancer is a condition where the cells in the lung tissue begin to divide uncontrollably.
There are two primary types of lung cancer:
Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)
Adenocarcinoma: This type often begins in the cells that produce mucus in the bronchi.
Squamous cell carcinoma: Arises in the squamous cells lining the bronchial tubes.
Large cell carcinoma: A less common type that can occur in any part of the lung.
Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)
This type tends to grow and spread more quickly than NSCLC. It is often associated with a history of smoking.
These two types of lung cancer are based on the appearance of the cancer cells under a microscope. The distinction between NSCLC and SCLC is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment approach.
