Start here

The lump feeling is common, and food usually still goes down

Most people who describe something stuck in the throat can eat perfectly well. These 4 causes account for the great majority of them.

A late meal on a kitchen table under a single light
COMMONEST

Acid coming up

Stomach acid reaching the throat leaves it feeling tight and lumpy, often worse in the morning or after a late meal. It improves with what you eat and when you eat it.

An office chair and a desk by a window at the end of the day
VERY COMMON

Tension in the throat muscles

The muscles around the throat tighten when you are under sustained stress, and a tight throat feels exactly like something lodged in it. The sensation is physical and real.

COMMON

Mucus running down the back

From a blocked nose, allergy or a recent infection. It collects at the back of the throat and produces a constant need to clear it.

WORTH CHECKING

A thyroid that has enlarged

The thyroid sits exactly where the sensation is, and one that has grown can press enough to be felt. It is usually easy to identify by feeling the neck.

These share one feature: swallowing still works. Food goes down the way it always did, and the sensation is there whether you are eating or not.

What is different

3 things that mean swallowing itself is the problem

None of these means cancer. They mean this is no longer a sensation, it is a mechanical problem with getting food down, and that needs a different sort of look.

A glass of water beside a partly eaten meal
THE MAIN ONE

Food genuinely catches

Not a lump feeling, but food stopping and needing water or a second swallow to shift it. That is swallowing failing rather than a throat that feels odd.

THE PATTERN

It started with solids and moved on

Bread, rice and meat first, while soft food stayed easy. If softer things have started catching too over recent weeks, that direction of travel is the important part.

THE ONE TO SAY FIRST

Weight is coming off

Losing weight without trying, alongside anything to do with swallowing, is the combination that gets seen soonest. Say it when you call rather than at the appointment.

One situation is an emergency. If food is completely stuck and will not go down, or you cannot swallow your own saliva and are drooling, go to a hospital now. Everything else on this page can wait for a normal appointment.

Do this at your next meal

Does eating make it better or worse?

This is the most useful question on the page and most people have the answer already without realising it. The 2 things that feel identical behave in opposite directions once food is involved.

Better while you eatThe lump eases during a meal and comes back afterwards. That is the common kind, and it is usually reflux or muscle tension.
Worse while you eatFine between meals, and food is what catches. That is swallowing not working, which is the one to have looked at.
No difference either wayWorth a look if it has been more than 3 weeks, particularly if anything else on this page fits.

Most people expect it to be the other way round, which is why it is worth checking rather than assuming. You do not need an appointment to find out. You need one meal and a little attention while you eat it.

What else to notice

3 things worth mentioning when you book

Any of these alongside the stuck feeling makes the case for looking properly, and people often think they are unrelated.

Hoarse or not quite yours, for more than 3 weeks. Family notice before you do. The sore throat with ear pain page has more on it.

THE PRACTICAL ONE

Food comes back up

Undigested food returning some time after a meal, rather than sour liquid rising after a heavy one. Those are different things and the first matters more.

EASY TO IGNORE

It hurts to swallow

Not a sore throat that hurts all the time, but pain that arrives specifically as something goes down. Look at what you have quietly stopped drinking.

Any of these for more than 3 weeks?Say all of it when you call. It changes how quickly you are seen and what gets arranged.

What happens

4 steps, and most people are out in 20 minutes

Nothing here is difficult, and the first 2 steps settle a good proportion of cases without going further.

FIRST

ALWAYS

The neck felt by hand

Along both sides and over the thyroid. This is what identifies an enlarged thyroid, and it takes about a minute.

IF NEEDED

A thin flexible camera

For the part of the throat that cannot be seen from outside. Numbing spray first, through the nose, under a minute. Uncomfortable rather than painful.

THEN

What was found, written down

Including if nothing was found, which is the commonest outcome here. You are told plainly, and told what helps if it is reflux or tension.

Questions

8 questions people ask, and the honest answers

Starting with the one everybody wants settled, and the one that most often gets answered badly elsewhere.

01

Is a lump feeling in the throat serious?

Usually not, if food still goes down normally. The feeling of a lump with swallowing that works is common and is usually reflux or tension in the throat muscles. What changes the picture is food actually catching, which is a different problem.

02

Someone told me it is stress. Is that a real thing or am I being dismissed?

It is real, and it is physical. The muscles around the throat tighten under sustained tension, and a tight throat feels exactly like something lodged in it. That is a genuine physical sensation with a genuine physical cause. It is not imagined and it does not mean nobody is taking you seriously.

03

How do I tell the difference myself?

Notice what a meal does to it. A lump feeling that eases while you eat and returns between meals is the common kind. Food that catches, so the trouble starts when you eat and stops when you finish, is the other kind. They point in opposite directions.

04

Does it matter which foods?

Yes, and it is one of the most useful things you can tell us. Trouble with bread, rice or meat first, while soft food and liquids stay easy, is a particular pattern. If softer things have started catching too over recent weeks, say that clearly when you book.

05

How long should I give it?

3 weeks, and less if food is catching. A lump feeling that comes and goes for a few weeks with normal eating can be watched. Food physically sticking does not need 3 weeks of watching, and neither does anything that is getting steadily worse.

06

I have lost weight without trying. Does that change anything?

Yes, mention it first when you call. Weight coming off without trying, alongside anything to do with swallowing, is the combination that gets seen soonest. Bring a rough idea of how much and over how long.

07

What will they actually do?

Look, feel your neck, and if needed a thin camera. A look at the mouth and throat, then feeling the neck. If the lower throat needs seeing, a slim flexible scope goes through the nose after numbing spray. Under a minute, uncomfortable rather than painful, and you go home straight after.

08

Could it be my thyroid?

It can be, and that is worth checking. A thyroid that has enlarged sits right where the sensation is and can press enough to be felt. It is usually easy to identify by feeling the neck, which is part of the examination anyway.
