Understanding the numbers
What Determines Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Cost?
No two patients have the same chemotherapy plan — and so no two patients pay exactly the same amount. Here are the main factors your oncologist will explain during your consultation.
Stage & Spread
Stage of Cancer
Early-stage breast cancer (Stage I–II) may require fewer chemotherapy cycles than locally advanced or metastatic disease. Your oncologist will review your pathology report, biopsy results, and scans before recommending a course length.
Treatment Timing
Before or After Surgery
Chemotherapy given before surgery (neoadjuvant) shrinks the tumour to allow a less extensive operation. Chemotherapy after surgery (adjuvant) reduces recurrence risk. The timing affects total number of cycles and therefore total cost.
Added Therapies
Targeted or Hormone Therapy
Some breast cancers respond to targeted therapy or hormone-blocking therapy in addition to chemotherapy. Whether these additions are appropriate depends on your cancer's receptor profile (HR, HER2) — determined by biopsy. Combined protocols affect the total treatment cost.
Care Setting
Day-Care vs In-Patient
Most chemotherapy cycles are given as day-care infusions — you go home the same day. Day-care costs are significantly lower than full in-patient admission. In-patient stays are recommended only when your protocol or health condition requires monitoring overnight.
Breast cancer caught at Stage I has a 1-year survival rate of 96.9% at CION, compared to a national average of 85.4%* — a difference of 11.5 percentage points. Early diagnosis also typically means fewer chemotherapy cycles and lower overall treatment cost. Do not delay a consultation because of cost concerns — a written estimate is free. *1-year survival, all stages combined. Source: ICMR/NCRP. CION internal audit.
Indicative Ranges · Updated June 2026
Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Cost — Indicative Ranges
These are indicative ranges only. Your actual cost will depend on your individual protocol, number of cycles, and whether additional therapies are recommended by your tumor board. Always request a free written estimate before starting treatment.
| Setting / Scenario | Indicative Range (per cycle) | Typical No. of Cycles | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day-care infusion (standard protocol) | ₹8,000 – ₹35,000 | 4 – 6 | Most common for early-stage disease; home same day |
| Day-care with targeted therapy added | ₹30,000 – ₹1,20,000 | 6 – 8 | HER2-positive or other receptor-driven protocols |
| Neoadjuvant (before surgery) | ₹10,000 – ₹60,000 | 4 – 8 | Aims to shrink tumour; reduces surgical extent |
| Metastatic / advanced disease | ₹20,000 – ₹1,50,000+ | Ongoing, reviewed every 2–3 cycles | Protocols chosen to balance efficacy and quality of life |
| Immunotherapy added to chemotherapy | ₹60,000 – ₹3,00,000+ | As per protocol | Triple-negative breast cancer or specific indications only |
All figures are indicative only. Costs vary by individual protocol, centre, supportive care needs, and insurance coverage. CION will provide a free written itemised estimate before any treatment begins. Ranges exclude diagnostics, hospital accommodation (if needed), and supportive care medicines unless specified.

What to expect
Your Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Journey at CION
From the first consultation to your final cycle, here is how we walk this journey with you — step by step, with costs explained at every stage.
45-Minute Consultation & Cost Discussion
Your first appointment is a detailed, unhurried conversation with a medical oncologist. You receive a written summary of proposed treatment and an indicative cost estimate — all at no charge. Insurance or scheme eligibility is checked before you leave the room.
Tumor Board Review
Every new case is presented at a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board. Medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists review your pathology, imaging, and proposed plan together. Your chemotherapy protocol is agreed by a minimum of 5 specialists before treatment starts. This prevents unnecessary cycles — keeping both your health and your cost optimal.
Pre-Chemotherapy Workup
Before your first cycle, baseline blood tests and cardiac assessment ensure you are fit for treatment. CION orders only the workup your protocol requires — no unnecessary tests. Up to 50% discounts apply on diagnostic tests ordered through our centres.
Day-Care Chemotherapy Infusion
Most cycles are delivered in our dedicated day-care infusion suites. You arrive in the morning and return home by afternoon. An oncology nurse monitors you throughout each session. Day-care significantly reduces cost compared to in-patient admissions.
Response Assessment & Protocol Review
After every 2–3 cycles, imaging or markers are used to assess how well the cancer is responding. If the response is excellent, your tumor board may reduce the number of remaining cycles — saving time and cost. If adjustment is needed, the protocol is modified early. Nothing is continued unchanged without evidence of benefit.
Tumour board-led treatment decisions have been shown to reduce unnecessary chemotherapy cycles. At CION, every patient's protocol is reviewed by at least 5 specialists before a single dose is administered. Fewer unnecessary cycles means lower cost and fewer side effects. This is what "decisions for healing, not billing" means in practice.
Cost clarity before you decide
What Patients Ask About Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Cost
These are the questions most patients ask at their first consultation. We believe you deserve honest, plain-language answers.
Why does breast cancer chemotherapy cost vary so much between patients?
Chemotherapy is not a single medicine — it is a category of treatments, and the specific protocol chosen depends on your cancer's stage, biology, and your overall health. A patient with early-stage hormone receptor-positive breast cancer may need 4 cycles of one type of protocol. A patient with HER2-positive disease may need a different protocol over a longer course, sometimes with additional targeted therapy. The number of cycles, the setting (day-care vs in-patient), and any added therapies together explain the wide range in cost. At CION, your tumor board will choose the right protocol for you — never the most expensive one by default.
What is included in the breast cancer chemotherapy cost estimate at CION?
Our written cost estimates are itemised, not a single lump-sum figure. They typically cover: the chemotherapy infusion itself; the day-care facility charge for each session; pre-cycle blood monitoring tests; anti-nausea and supportive medicines; and any blood-count growth-factor injections your protocol requires. Items not included in the standard estimate — such as additional imaging after cycles, unrelated health issues, or any in-patient stay that becomes necessary — are explained clearly at the time they arise. Nothing is added to your bill without a prior conversation.
Can I use Aarogyasri or CGHS to cover breast cancer chemotherapy cost?
Yes — CION is enrolled with major government healthcare schemes. Aarogyasri (Telangana state scheme) covers breast cancer treatment including chemotherapy for eligible beneficiaries. CGHS covers central government employees and pensioners. ECHS covers ex-servicemen and their families. EHS covers state government employees of Telangana. Our patient-support team will verify your eligibility, help you gather the required documents, and submit the pre-authorisation on your behalf. If your entitlement does not cover the full treatment cost, we will explain the gap amount clearly and explore EMI options with you.
Does private health insurance cover breast cancer chemotherapy in Hyderabad?
Most private health insurance policies in India include cancer chemotherapy as a covered procedure, either under in-patient hospitalisation or day-care benefits. Day-care chemotherapy is recognised as a covered procedure under most current policies. However, the exact coverage limit, waiting periods, and exclusions vary by policy. CION's insurance support team will review your policy document, confirm the extent of coverage, and submit cashless pre-authorisation with your insurer before your first cycle. Bring your insurance card and policy number to your consultation.
Can I get a second opinion on my chemotherapy protocol and cost estimate before starting?
Absolutely — and we actively encourage it. A second opinion before starting chemotherapy is not just acceptable; it is sensible medicine. CION offers free written second opinions for breast cancer patients. You bring your existing biopsy reports, staging scans, and any treatment plan you have received elsewhere. Our tumor board reviews everything and gives you an independent written opinion — covering both the appropriate protocol and the cost. Many patients find that a second opinion either confirms the original plan (giving them confidence) or suggests a more appropriate approach. You deserve both clarity and peace of mind before treatment begins.
What happens to the cost if my chemotherapy protocol changes mid-course?
Protocol changes do happen — sometimes the cancer responds exceptionally well and fewer cycles are needed; sometimes a different approach gives a better result. At CION, any change to your protocol is explained to you before it takes effect, along with a revised cost estimate. If the change reduces your treatment course, your cost estimate is adjusted downward accordingly. If additional treatment becomes necessary, we explain why before proceeding — never after. You are always in control of the financial picture. No additions are made to your treatment plan or your bill without a prior, honest conversation.
