Kidney-function check
A blood test may be done to check your kidney function before an iodine-based dye is given.
A CT scan is quick and straightforward, and most scans need little preparation. Exactly what you need to do depends on the type of scan and whether contrast dye is used. This simple guide walks you through how to prepare — before, during and after — so your appointment goes smoothly and the images are as clear as possible. Always follow the specific instructions given by your scan centre, as they take priority.
A few simple things to sort out before you arrive. Most CT scans need very little preparation — your scan centre will confirm anything specific to your study.
The CT scan itself usually takes only a few minutes — most of an appointment is check-in and, for contrast studies, preparation. A CT scanner is open and ring-shaped, not an enclosed tunnel, so it feels far less confined than an MRI. Source: RadiologyInfo.org (RSNA & ACR).
Some CT scans use an iodine-based contrast dye to make certain tissues clearer. If yours does, a few extra steps apply.

Mention any allergy, or a previous reaction to contrast dye, before your scan.
Tell the team about diabetes and any diabetes medicines, as advice on timing may apply.
Drink water normally unless told otherwise, and drink plenty afterwards to help clear the dye.

You will lie on a table that slides slowly through the ring-shaped scanner. The scan is painless, and you will be asked to stay still — and sometimes to hold your breath briefly — so the images come out sharp. If contrast is given by injection, you may feel a brief warm sensation or a metallic taste, which passes quickly. The actual scanning usually takes only a few minutes.
You can usually return to normal activities straight away. If you were given contrast, drink plenty of water to help flush it out. Your scan is reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is typically ready the same day or by the next day, depending on the centre and the study.
For children, or anyone who finds scans stressful, explaining the steps in advance helps. The scan is short and painless, and a parent or companion can often stay nearby. In some cases, mild measures are used to help young children stay still — the centre will advise.
