How to Prepare for a CT Scan — CT scans from ₹999

A CT scan is quick and straightforward, and most scans need little preparation. Exactly what you need to do depends on the type of scan and whether contrast dye is used. This simple guide walks you through how to prepare — before, during and after — so your appointment goes smoothly and the images are as clear as possible. Always follow the specific instructions given by your scan centre, as they take priority.

Step 1 · Getting ready

Before your scan

A few simple things to sort out before you arrive. Most CT scans need very little preparation — your scan centre will confirm anything specific to your study.

  • Bring your paperwork — carry your doctor's prescription and any previous scans, reports or films.
  • Eating and drinking — for most plain scans you can eat and drink normally; for a contrast scan you may be asked to fast for about 4–6 hours.
  • What to wear — wear comfortable, loose clothing and avoid metal items. You may be asked to change into a gown and remove jewellery, watches, hairpins, glasses and hearing aids.
  • Your medicines — take your regular medicines as usual unless told otherwise, and bring a list of them.

Did you know?

The CT scan itself usually takes only a few minutes — most of an appointment is check-in and, for contrast studies, preparation. A CT scanner is open and ring-shaped, not an enclosed tunnel, so it feels far less confined than an MRI. Source: RadiologyInfo.org (RSNA & ACR).

Step 2 · Contrast studies

If your scan uses contrast

Some CT scans use an iodine-based contrast dye to make certain tissues clearer. If yours does, a few extra steps apply.

Kidney-function check

A blood test may be done to check your kidney function before an iodine-based dye is given.

Tell us about allergies

Mention any allergy, or a previous reaction to contrast dye, before your scan.

Diabetes & medicines

Tell the team about diabetes and any diabetes medicines, as advice on timing may apply.

Stay hydrated

Drink water normally unless told otherwise, and drink plenty afterwards to help clear the dye.

Step 3 · Speak up

What to tell your doctor or the team

A short heads-up helps the team keep your scan safe and comfortable. Let them know:

  • If you are pregnant or might be.
  • If you have kidney problems.
  • Any allergies, especially to contrast dye.
  • Any implants or devices.
  • If you feel anxious in enclosed spaces — a CT scanner is open, but telling the team helps them support you.

What to expect

During your CT scan

You will lie on a table that slides slowly through the ring-shaped scanner. The scan is painless, and you will be asked to stay still — and sometimes to hold your breath briefly — so the images come out sharp. If contrast is given by injection, you may feel a brief warm sensation or a metallic taste, which passes quickly. The actual scanning usually takes only a few minutes.

After your appointment

After the scan

You can usually return to normal activities straight away. If you were given contrast, drink plenty of water to help flush it out. Your scan is reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is typically ready the same day or by the next day, depending on the centre and the study.

Extra support

Preparing a child or an anxious patient

For children, or anyone who finds scans stressful, explaining the steps in advance helps. The scan is short and painless, and a parent or companion can often stay nearby. In some cases, mild measures are used to help young children stay still — the centre will advise.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast before a CT scan?

For most plain scans, no. For a contrast scan you may be asked to fast for about 4–6 hours. Follow the specific instructions from your scan centre.

Can I drink water before a CT scan?

Usually yes, and staying hydrated is often encouraged — but follow the instructions you are given, as some abdominal protocols have specific guidance.

What should I wear for a CT scan?

Comfortable, loose clothing without metal. You may be asked to change into a gown and remove jewellery, watches and other metal items.

Should I take my regular medicines before the scan?

Usually yes, unless told otherwise. Bring a list of your medicines, and mention diabetes medication, as timing advice may apply for contrast scans.

How long does a CT scan take?

The scan itself usually takes only a few minutes. With contrast or preparation, the overall visit may be longer.

Can someone come with me?

Usually yes. A companion can often wait nearby, which is especially helpful for children or anyone who feels anxious.
