Rajiv Aarogyasri in Telangana and Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva in Andhra Pradesh can pay for a bone marrow transplant for some blood cancers and blood disorders, but only at an empanelled hospital and only after the scheme's trust approves your case. The short answer
Does Aarogyasri pay for a bone marrow transplant?
Often yes, for the right condition at an empanelled hospital. Rajiv Aarogyasri in Telangana and Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva in Andhra Pradesh both list transplant procedures for some blood cancers and blood disorders. Cover is never automatic. It depends on the diagnosis, the type of transplant, the hospital and a pre-approval from the scheme's trust.
What "covered" usually means
A scheme pays a fixed package amount to the hospital for a named procedure. That package is meant to include the hospital stay, the transplant itself and the medicines given during that stay. It is paid straight to the hospital, so you do not claim it back later.
Who it may not suit
If your family card is from another state, the Telangana and Andhra schemes will not apply. If your condition is not on the package list, or the transplant centre you want is not empanelled for that procedure, the scheme cannot pay there. Some donor searches, costly tests before the transplant and long stays after it can also fall outside the package.
What this page cannot tell you

The card in your hand decides the route. Many families hold more than one, and the team can tell you which to use first.
Rajiv Aarogyasri (Telangana)
For families in Telangana with a white ration card or the scheme's own health card. A transplant is paid only at hospitals the trust has approved for that procedure.
Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva (Andhra Pradesh)
The Andhra Pradesh scheme, earlier run under another name. Eligible Andhra families may be treated at empanelled hospitals in Hyderabad as well as in their own state, where the trust allows it.
PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat)
The national scheme. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh it runs alongside the state scheme, so the state trust usually handles the paperwork.

How does approval for a transplant work?

A diagnosis and a clear plan
The haematologist confirms the diagnosis and writes why a transplant is advised, and which type. The scheme will not approve without this written plan and the reports behind it.

Referral to an empanelled transplant centre
CION's haematology team reviews your case at a tumour board and helps you reach a qualified transplant centre that is empanelled. CION does not carry out the transplant itself.

Registration with the Aarogyamithra
At the transplant centre, the scheme's help desk checks your card and identity, and registers you. Bring the original card and the patient's Aadhaar.

Pre-authorisation
The hospital sends your reports to the trust and asks for approval of the package. This can take some days, and the trust may ask for more reports. Keep your phone on and reply quickly.

Admission and discharge
Once approved, you are admitted on the package. At discharge, check which follow-up visits and medicines the package still includes, and what you will pay for yourself.

What should you carry to the scheme help desk?
- The original Aarogyasri, Vaidya Seva or Ayushman card
- Aadhaar for the patient, and for a family donor if there is one
- The white ration card, where the scheme asks for it
- The bone marrow report and the tissue matching report, with copies
- The haematologist's letter advising the transplant
- A phone number that will be answered during approval
Plan for the gaps
What might you still pay for yourself?
Even with full approval, families often meet costs that sit outside the package. Knowing them early means fewer shocks during the hardest weeks.
Before the transplant
Tests to find a matching donor, and a search of unrelated donor registries, may not be part of the package. Some scans and tests done to check fitness can also be billed separately. Ask the transplant centre for a written list of what the trust pays and what it does not.
During and after the stay
If the stay runs longer than the package allows, or a serious infection needs costly medicines, the hospital may ask the trust for more, or ask you. After discharge, months of follow-up visits, blood tests and medicines add up. Some are covered as follow-up packages; others are not.
Living costs in Hyderabad
Most families from the districts need a room near the centre for weeks, plus food and travel. No scheme pays for this, so plan it early.
Ask the centre, in writing, what happens if approval is delayed or the package runs out. Do not sign for a large deposit without that answer.Commonly believed
What do families get wrong about scheme cover?
"Aarogyasri means the transplant is free anywhere."
Cover applies only at hospitals empanelled for that procedure, and only after the trust approves your case. A centre outside the list can charge you in full, even if you hold a valid card.
"Our card is from Andhra, so Hyderabad is not possible."
Andhra Pradesh families have used empanelled Hyderabad hospitals under their own scheme when the trust allows it. The rules have changed before, so ask the help desk what applies this year.
"If the scheme refuses, there is nothing left to try."
A refusal is often about a missing report or a code, not the case itself. The hospital can resubmit. Insurance, employee schemes and hospital social workers are other routes worth asking about.
"We should sell land first, just in case."
Wait until you have a written estimate and the trust's decision. Many families find the gap is smaller than they feared. Make large decisions with the real numbers in hand.

Common questions about transplant under Aarogyasri
Does Aarogyasri cover both types of transplant?
Package lists have included transplants using your own stem cells and transplants from a donor, for certain conditions. Which ones apply, and at which hospitals, is set by the trust and changes over time. The transplant centre's Aarogyamithra can check the current list against your diagnosis before you plan anything else.
Can CION do the transplant under Aarogyasri?
CION does not carry out bone marrow transplants. CION's haematology team, led by Dr. Basudev Pokhrel, reviews your reports, discusses your case at a tumour board and helps you reach an empanelled transplant centre. We also help you prepare the papers the scheme will ask for.
How long does pre-approval take?
It varies. A complete file with every report attached moves faster. The trust may send questions back, and each round adds time. Ask the hospital to tell you the moment a query arrives, so the missing document reaches them the same day rather than the next week.
Is the donor's testing covered?
Sometimes only partly. Testing brothers and sisters to find a match, and searching unrelated donor registries, may sit outside the transplant package. Ask the centre for this in writing before testing begins, so the family knows what it may need to pay and can plan for it.
What if our family limit is already used up this year?
Earlier treatment in the same year may have used part of your family's cover. Ask the help desk to check the balance on your card. If it is short, ask whether PM-JAY, an employee scheme or insurance can pay the rest, and what the rules are this year.
Are medicines after discharge paid for?
Some follow-up care is listed as its own package for a period after the transplant. Other medicines, tests and visits may not be. Before discharge, ask the centre to list what the scheme continues to pay and what you will buy. If cost is a worry, tell the team rather than missing a medicine.
We have private insurance. Do we still need Aarogyasri?
It depends on your sum insured and your policy's limits. A transplant can use up a large share of a standard family policy. Some families use insurance first and then a scheme, where the rules allow. Ask both the insurer and the help desk before admission, not after.
