The short answer
Is nephrectomy for kidney cancer covered under Aarogyasri?
In most cases, yes. Kidney removal for cancer falls within the cancer surgery packages of the Telangana Aarogyasri scheme, and an eligible family can usually have the operation without paying the hospital bill at an empanelled hospital. The exact package, and what it includes, is confirmed only when the hospital applies for approval.
What "covered" usually means in practice
The scheme pays the hospital a fixed package amount for the operation. That package normally includes the surgery, the stay in hospital, routine medicines and tests during the stay, and a short period of follow-up. You should not be asked to pay for things inside the package. Items outside it, and anything done before approval, may be a different matter.
Who the scheme does not suit
Aarogyasri is for eligible families in Telangana, usually identified through a white ration card or an Aarogyasri card. If your family is not eligible, or you want treatment at a hospital that is not empanelled for this operation, the scheme will not pay. Government employees and pensioners are usually covered under EHS instead.

How does the Aarogyasri process work for a kidney operation?

Check eligibility
Carry your white ration card or Aarogyasri card and Aadhaar for the patient. The name on the card must match the patient. If it does not, sort this out early, because it is the most common cause of delay.

Meet the Aarogyamithra
Every empanelled hospital has an Aarogyasri help desk staffed by an Aarogyamithra. They register the patient, check the documents and explain what happens next. Go to them before paying for anything.

Tests and diagnosis
The surgeon needs scans and reports showing the kidney tumour. Some tests may already be done. Others are arranged at the hospital as part of the evaluation.

Approval from the Trust
The hospital sends your reports online to the Aarogyasri Health Care Trust and asks for pre-authorisation, meaning approval in advance. The operation is usually scheduled once approval comes through.

Surgery and stay
The operation, hospital stay and routine care during the stay are handled under the package. Keep copies of every paper you sign.

Discharge and follow-up
At discharge you get a summary and medicines. Follow-up visits within the package period are usually covered. Ask what happens after that.

What should the family bring to the hospital?
Missing papers are the most common reason approval is slow. Put everything in one folder.
Identity and eligibility
- White ration card or Aarogyasri card
- Aadhaar card of the patient
- A family member's phone number that stays on
Medical reports
- CT or MRI scan films and reports
- Any biopsy report, if one was done
- Recent blood tests and ECG
Other health papers
Prescriptions for diabetes, blood pressure, heart or blood-thinning medicines, and discharge summaries from any earlier hospital stay.
Referral letters
A letter from the doctor or district hospital that sent you, if you have one. It is not always required, but it helps the team understand what has been done.

What do families often get wrong about Aarogyasri surgery?
"Aarogyasri patients get a lesser operation."
The scheme pays for the operation. The surgical team decides how to do it on medical grounds. Ask your surgeon directly how they plan to operate and why, as any patient would.
"We have to pay first and claim it back later."
Aarogyasri is cashless at empanelled hospitals. If you are asked for money for something inside the package, speak to the Aarogyamithra and ask for the reason in writing.
"We should wait until the card problem is solved before seeing a surgeon."
Do both at once. A surgical opinion can move forward while the paperwork is fixed, and delay can matter with a kidney tumour.
"If Aarogyasri does not apply, surgery is out of reach."
Other routes may help. Ask about CGHS, ECHS, EHS, employer cover and cashless insurance, and ask the hospital for a written estimate.

This page cannot tell you whether your family qualifies, which package applies, or whether a particular hospital is empanelled for this operation today. Only the Aarogyasri help desk and the Trust can confirm that.
Other ways the cost may be covered
Central government employees and pensioners may be covered by CGHS. Ex-servicemen and their families may use ECHS. Telangana state government employees and pensioners are usually under EHS. Many families also have cashless health insurance through an employer or a private policy. CION accepts Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and EHS, and most cashless insurers are empanelled. Out-of-pocket costs under each can be very different.
Treatment after the operation
Some people need further treatment or long-term scans after kidney surgery. Whether those are covered depends on the treatment and the scheme's rules at the time. Ask about this before discharge, not when the next appointment comes around.
Questions to ask at the help desk
Is this hospital empanelled for kidney cancer surgery under the scheme today? Which package will the hospital apply under? Is anything we have already paid for likely to be covered? Which tests or items might fall outside the package? How long is follow-up covered after discharge? Who do we speak to if approval is delayed? Write the answers down, or ask the family member who handles paperwork to keep them in the same folder as the reports.

Common questions about nephrectomy under Aarogyasri
Does Aarogyasri cover keyhole kidney surgery?
The scheme covers the operation that the surgeon judges suitable, within its approved packages. Whether keyhole or open surgery is used depends on the tumour and your safety. Ask the surgeon which approach they plan and confirm with the Aarogyamithra that it sits within the approved package.
How long does Aarogyasri approval take?
It varies. When the documents are complete and the reports clearly show the need for surgery, approval is often quick. Mismatched names, missing scans or unclear reports slow it down. Keep your phone on so the hospital can reach you if the Trust asks a question.
Is partial nephrectomy also covered?
Removing only the tumour and part of the kidney is a recognised cancer operation and is generally treated like other kidney cancer surgery under the scheme. The hospital confirms the specific package when it applies for approval. Ask the help desk to check before the date is fixed.
Can we use Aarogyasri at a hospital in Hyderabad if we live in a district?
Yes. Aarogyasri can be used at empanelled hospitals across Telangana, not only in your own district. Families from districts often travel to Hyderabad for cancer surgery. Plan for travel, food and a place for the family to stay, which the scheme does not usually cover.
What if the hospital asks us to pay money?
Ask what the payment is for, and ask the Aarogyamithra whether it falls inside the package. Some items, such as tests before registration or things outside the approved package, may not be covered. Ask for a written explanation before you pay.
Are follow-up scans after surgery covered?
Follow-up within the package period is usually included. Later scans and visits depend on the scheme's rules for cancer follow-up at that time. Ask the help desk before discharge, and keep your discharge summary safe, because you will need it.
The name on our ration card is spelt differently. What now?
Tell the Aarogyamithra straight away. Small spelling differences are common, and there is often a way to correct or verify them, but it takes time. Start this early, and do not delay a surgical opinion while it is being sorted out.
