What does a parathyroidectomy cost in Hyderabad?
There is no single price for a parathyroidectomy in Hyderabad or anywhere in India. The bill depends on which operation is planned, the scans before it, the hospital and room you choose, how many nights you stay, and above all on your cover. For many families in Telangana with Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance, the amount paid from pocket is far below the sticker figure.
Why the sticker figure misleads
A hospital quote usually covers the operation package alone. The scans that locate the gland, the blood tests, the pathology report, the calcium tablets afterwards and the follow-up tests are often billed separately. Two families can have the same operation and receive very different final bills.
What decides the band
A single overactive gland removed through a small cut, with one night in hospital, sits at the lower end. A full exploration of all four glands, a second operation through scar tissue, or a gland in the chest needing a chest approach sit higher. Extra theatre time, hormone monitoring in theatre and a longer stay all add to the total.
If parathyroid cancer is suspected, the operation is wider and the follow-up longer. Ask your surgical oncologist for an estimate specific to that plan.Indicative cost
Which parathyroid operations sit in which cost band?
Relative bands, not quotes. Where your operation falls depends on the plan your surgeon makes and on your cover.
Lowest band
Focused removal of one gland
A small cut on one side, guided by scans, often with hormone monitoring in theatre. Usually one night in hospital.
Middle band
Exploration of all four glands
A wider neck operation when more than one gland is overactive or the scans are unclear. Longer theatre time and often a longer stay.
Highest band
Reoperation, or a gland in the chest
A second operation through scar tissue, or an approach through the chest for a gland sitting low. More scans beforehand, longer surgery, closer calcium monitoring afterwards.

What pushes the bill up or down?
Ask about each of these before the day. Most surprises on the final bill come from one of them.
The scans before surgery
A sestamibi scan and a neck ultrasound are usual. A specialised CT or a PET scan may be added if the gland is hard to find. These are often outside the operation package and can be a large share of the total.
The room you choose
The room category sets not only the room rent but often the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees too. Insurance policies with a room rent cap can cut back the whole claim if you choose a room above the cap.

Theatre time and monitoring
Hormone monitoring in theatre, a frozen section, and nerve monitoring each add a charge. They can also shorten the operation and avoid a second one, so ask what your surgeon plans and why.
The days after
Calcium and vitamin D tablets, repeat blood tests and an extra night if calcium falls low are all real costs. A family with hungry bone syndrome may spend more on the recovery than on the operation itself.

Before you agree
How do you get a real estimate against your own cover?
Get the plan in writing
Ask the surgeon to write down which operation is planned, which scans are still needed, the expected nights in hospital and whether hormone monitoring is planned. An estimate is only as good as the plan behind it.
Take it to the insurance desk
With your Aarogyasri card, CGHS, ECHS or EHS card, or your policy number, the desk checks whether the operation is listed, what room is covered and what the scheme ceiling is. Ask for the answer in writing.
Ask what is outside the package
Go through the list above item by item. Ask which ones you will pay for and roughly how much. Ask what happens to the bill if calcium falls low and you need an extra night.
Get pre-authorisation before the date
For cashless insurance and government schemes, approval must be in place before admission. The hospital desk sends the request, but you should ask to see that it has come back approved, and for what amount.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what you will pay. Only a written estimate from the hospital, checked against your own scheme or policy, can do that. Bands on a website are for planning and comparing.
It cannot tell you which operation you need
The cheaper focused operation suits a single overactive gland that the scans have clearly found. It does not suit four-gland disease, an unclear scan or suspected cancer. The operation is chosen on medical grounds by your treating team, and the cost follows from that.
Where the scheme ceiling matters
Aarogyasri and the government schemes pay a fixed package amount for a listed operation. If the hospital's charges are higher, or an item is not in the package, the difference may fall to you. Ask the desk to show you the package amount and the hospital's charge side by side before admission.
If the estimate is more than you can manage, say so early. A different room or timing the scans differently can change the figure without changing the operation.Commonly believed
Four things families tell us about the cost
"It is a small gland, so it should be a small bill."
The gland is tiny, and the skill is in finding it safely next to the voice nerve. The scans to locate it and the theatre time to reach it are what you pay for. A small cut does not always mean a small bill.
"Aarogyasri covers everything, so there is nothing to pay."
The scheme pays a fixed package for a listed operation at an empanelled hospital. Scans done elsewhere, items outside the package and a room above the scheme category can still fall to the family. Check the list before admission.
"The cheapest quote is the one to take."
A low quote may leave out the scans, the pathology report or the follow-up. Compare quotes item by item, and ask each centre how they will confirm the right gland is out. A missed gland means a second operation, which costs far more.
"We can wait a few years and save up."
Untreated high calcium keeps thinning bone and stressing the kidneys, and a fracture or a kidney stone admission costs more than the operation. If money is the barrier, ask about schemes and cover first.

Common questions about parathyroidectomy cost
Is parathyroidectomy covered under Aarogyasri?
Parathyroid surgery is among the endocrine operations that government schemes in Telangana cover at empanelled hospitals, but the package, the listed procedure name and any pre-authorisation rules change from time to time. Take your card to the hospital scheme desk and ask them to confirm in writing before the date.
Will my private health insurance pay for it?
Usually, if the policy is active, the waiting period has passed and hyperparathyroidism was not declared as a pre-existing condition that is excluded. Room rent caps and co-payment clauses decide how much falls to you. Send the policy to the insurance desk early so they can read the fine print.
Are the scans before surgery part of the package?
Usually not. The sestamibi scan, ultrasound and any CT or PET scan are ordered as outpatient tests before admission and billed on their own. Some insurers cover tests done within a set number of days before admission, so ask the desk whether yours does and keep every receipt.
Why does the estimate change with the room?
At many hospitals the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees rise with the room category, not only the room rent. If your policy caps the room rent, choosing a room above the cap can reduce the insurer's share of the whole bill. Ask which room your policy covers fully and stay within it.
Does hormone monitoring in theatre cost extra?
At some centres it is a separate charge, and at others it is inside the package. It adds a lab cost, but it can avoid a wider exploration or a second operation, so ask your surgeon whether they plan to use it and how it is billed rather than declining it to save money.
What will the calcium tablets and follow-up cost?
Calcium and vitamin D tablets are inexpensive generic medicines, and calcium blood tests can be done at any local lab. The cost adds up if hungry bone syndrome means months of tablets and frequent tests. Ask at discharge how many tests are expected and whether the follow-up visit is included.
Is there an EMI or instalment option?
No. CION does not run an EMI scheme, and you should be cautious of any centre that presses one on you at the bedside. The routes that genuinely lower what you pay are Aarogyasri and the government schemes, cashless insurance, and choosing a room your cover pays for in full.
Is it cheaper to travel outside Hyderabad for the operation?
Sometimes the package is lower elsewhere, but travel, stay for the family and follow-up visits add back much of the saving, and a missed gland costs far more than any difference. Compare written estimates item by item, and ask each centre how experienced the surgeon is with parathyroid operations before deciding.
