Mesothelioma surgery cost in India: how the bill is built and what you may actually pay | CION Cancer Clinics

Mesothelioma surgery has no single price in India, because it covers everything from a keyhole biopsy with talc to a pleurectomy and decortication with days in intensive care. The bill is built from the operation chosen, the intensive care and ward days, the room category, and the cover you hold. This page explains each part, what an estimate should show, and how Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS and cashless insurance change what you pay yourself. CION Cancer Clinics’ surgical oncologists in Hyderabad can talk this through with you.

The short answer

Why is there no single price for mesothelioma surgery in India?

Because "mesothelioma surgery" covers everything from a keyhole biopsy with talc, done in a few days, to a pleurectomy and decortication with a week or two in hospital and days in intensive care. The bill is built from the operation chosen, the days in intensive care and on the ward, the room category, and what cover you hold. Those four things move it far more than the hospital's list price.

What the bill is made of

Tests before surgery, theatre time, the surgeon and anaesthetist, implants and disposables, intensive care days, ward days, medicines, physiotherapy, the tissue report and follow-up visits. In a package, most of these are bundled. Outside a package, each appears as a line, and the intensive care days are the most expensive lines on it.

Why complications matter most

A pleurectomy and decortication leaves a raw lung surface that leaks air for days. If the leak lingers or an infection develops, the stay stretches and so does the bill.

What this page cannot do

It cannot quote you a figure, and any figure a website quotes is not a quote either. Only a written, itemised estimate from the centre that will operate, against your own cover, tells you what you will pay.

How the bill varies

Which situations cost less, and which cost more?

Bands, not figures. The order is what matters: each step down this list adds days, staff time and risk to the bill.

Lower band

Keyhole biopsy with talc, general ward

A VATS biopsy and talc, a few days with a drain, a shared ward and no intensive care. Under Aarogyasri or a scheme, the out-of-pocket part is often small.

Middle band

Pleurectomy and decortication, short intensive care stay

The full operation in a fit patient, a day or two in intensive care, drains out on schedule and discharge in a week or so. A private room raises every daily charge.

Higher band

A complication, an added wash, or treatment around surgery

A prolonged air leak, a chest infection, a return to theatre, a heated chemotherapy wash, or chemotherapy and radiotherapy before and after can more than double what was first quoted.

Indicative only, for 2026. Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and EHS are accepted at CION, and most cashless insurers are empanelled. In those cases what you pay yourself is usually very different from the hospital sticker figure. There is no EMI offer. Call the helpline for an estimate against your own cover.

What is covered

What a surgical package usually includes

  • Surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre charges for the named operation
  • A stated number of intensive care and ward days, at a stated room category
  • Chest drains, dressings and routine disposables
  • Routine medicines and pain relief during the stay
  • Physiotherapy on the ward
  • The tissue report on what was removed
  • Ask whether: extra days, blood products, a heated wash, and follow-up scans are inside or outside
  • Ask whether: tests before admission are billed separately

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

What moves the bill

What makes the same operation cost more for one person than another?

Which operation

A biopsy with talc, a pleurectomy and decortication, and an extrapleural pneumonectomy that removes the lung are three very different operations with very different theatre time and recovery. The name on the estimate should match the operation the surgeon described.

Intensive care days

Each day in intensive care costs several times a ward day. An estimate that assumes one day, when the surgeon expects three, will be wrong before you are admitted. Ask what number is assumed.

Room category

Under most insurance, the room you choose sets the rate for every other charge. Choosing a room above your policy limit can reduce the cover on the whole bill, not only the room.

Additions and complications

A heated chemotherapy wash, blood transfusion, a longer air leak or an infection add lines that no estimate can promise to exclude.

Ask what happens to the price if

  • The stay runs over
  • A second procedure is needed
  • Treatment before or after surgery is added

Getting a real number

How do I get a written estimate I can rely on?

Bring the plan, not just the diagnosis

An estimate needs the name of the operation, the expected days in intensive care and on the ward, and whether anything is being added. Ask the surgeon for these in writing first.

Bring your cover

Your Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS or EHS card, or your insurance policy with its room limit and sub-limits. The estimate against your cover is the one that matters, not the sticker price.

Ask for it itemised

A single number on a slip is not an estimate. Ask for the room category, the days assumed, what is inside the package, what is billed separately, and what happens if the stay runs over.

Get the pre-authorisation started early

Schemes and insurers approve a stated amount before admission. The insurance desk at the centre does this, but it takes days, and any addition to the operation may need a fresh approval.

Schemes and insurance

What do Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS and insurance actually cover?

For most families in Telangana the real question is not the sticker price but what is left after the scheme or the insurer has paid. That gap is usually much smaller than the list price, and sometimes it is close to nothing for the core operation.

Aarogyasri and the government schemes

Aarogyasri covers listed cancer operations up to a ceiling per family per year at empanelled hospitals, with the procedure approved before admission. CGHS, ECHS and EHS work in a similar way for central government, ex-servicemen and state employee families, with their own rates. What falls outside the approved procedure, such as a private room upgrade or an added wash, is where families end up paying.

Cashless insurance

The insurer approves an amount before admission and settles directly with the hospital. Room rent limits, sub-limits on intensive care, and exclusions for consumables are the usual causes of a surprise bill at discharge. Read the policy schedule, not the brochure, and ask the insurance desk to point out the limits before you choose a room.

When there is no cover

Ask the centre about the general ward package and about government assistance funds for cancer. There is no EMI offer at CION.

Bring every card and policy document to the first appointment. The insurance desk can only check what it can see.

Commonly believed

Four things families tell us about the cost, and what is true

"The dearer the hospital, the better the operation."

Price tracks room category, location and brand more than surgical skill. What matters is how often the team does this operation, whether cases go to a tumour board, and what intensive care support exists. Ask those questions rather than reading the price as a grade.

"The package price is the final bill."

A package covers a stated operation for stated days. Extra days, blood, an added procedure or a complication sit outside it. Ask in writing what happens to the price in each of those cases before you sign.

"Aarogyasri patients get a lesser operation."

The operation is the same; the scheme sets what it pays, not what the surgeon does. What differs is usually the room and the extras. If a centre suggests otherwise, ask them to put it in writing.

"We should sell land now so the money is ready."

Get the itemised estimate against your cover first. Families who decide before that number often raise far more than they need, or borrow at a bad rate for a bill the scheme would have paid. The number comes before the decision.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about the cost of mesothelioma surgery

Can you just tell me the price of a pleurectomy?

Not honestly, because the bill depends on the days in intensive care, the room category, whether anything is added, and your cover. What we can do is give you a written, itemised estimate against your own scheme or policy once the surgeon has set out the plan. Call the helpline and we will start that.

Is mesothelioma surgery covered under Aarogyasri?

Listed cancer operations at empanelled hospitals are, up to the scheme ceiling, with approval before admission. Whether your particular operation is listed, and what falls outside it, is checked by the insurance desk against your card. Ask for that check before the admission date is fixed.

Why is the biopsy billed separately from the operation?

Because they are usually separate admissions, sometimes weeks apart, and the second is planned only after the first gives a diagnosis. Each has its own approval under a scheme or policy. Ask whether tests before the main operation are inside its package or billed on their own.

Does the heated chemotherapy wash cost extra?

Usually yes, and it is often outside the standard package and outside what a scheme approves, because it is not a standard item. If it is suggested, ask for it as a separate line on the estimate and check with your scheme or insurer before agreeing.

What if the stay runs longer than the package allows?

Extra days are billed at the daily rate for the room category, and intensive care days cost the most. Under a scheme, an extension may need fresh approval. Ask, before admission, exactly what an extra ward day and an extra intensive care day would cost.

Is treatment in Hyderabad cheaper than in Mumbai or Chennai?

Room and staff costs vary by city, but the larger difference for a Telangana family is usually travel, stay and lost work for the relatives, plus whether Aarogyasri applies. Compare the itemised estimates against your cover, and include what it costs to be away from home for weeks.

Can we pay in instalments?

There is no EMI offer at CION. What the insurance desk can do is check every scheme and policy you hold, tell you about government assistance funds, and explain how the hospital's own bill is settled. Ask early, because approvals take days.

Does a higher price mean a better surgeon?

No. Price follows room category, location and brand. The questions that tell you about the surgeon are how many of these operations the team does, whether every case goes to a tumour board, and what intensive care support is available if something goes wrong.

What moves the figure

What affects the cost

Four things change the total more than anything else.

The technique used

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.

How many sessions

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Supporting tests

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.

Your cover

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.

Paying for it

What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
