CION Cancer Clinics

Prostatectomy under Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS and insurance | CION Cancer Clinics

Prostate cancer surgery is a listed procedure under Aarogyasri at empanelled hospitals, and CGHS, ECHS, EHS and cashless health insurance cover it for eligible members. The differences lie in what each pays and what is left to the family: a robotic approach, a private room, a longer stay or items used at home. This page explains how each cover treats a prostatectomy, how pre-authorisation works, and what it cannot promise about your own policy. CION Cancer Clinics’ surgical oncologists in Hyderabad can talk this through with you.

The short answer

Is prostate cancer surgery covered by Aarogyasri and insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Prostate cancer surgery is a listed procedure under Aarogyasri at empanelled hospitals, and CGHS, ECHS, EHS and cashless health insurance all cover it for eligible members. What each one pays, and what is left for the family, is where the differences lie.

Where the gaps usually appear

Schemes pay a fixed package for the operation. A robotic approach, a private room, a longer stay or a complication can cost more than the package, and the difference may fall to you. Private insurance pays up to the sum insured, but room rent limits, co-payments and waiting periods in the policy can reduce what is approved. The gaps are predictable if you ask before the surgery date.

Who this page is for

The son or daughter holding the card or the policy, trying to work out what it will actually pay. It explains how each scheme treats a prostatectomy as of 2026, how pre-authorisation works, and what to ask the hospital's insurance desk. It does not know your policy, so treat it as a map, not a promise.

No EMI scheme exists at CION. The route to a smaller bill is your cover, applied properly and early.

Scheme by scheme

How does each kind of cover treat a prostatectomy?

Aarogyasri

Covers prostate cancer surgery at empanelled hospitals under a package rate, usually with no payment for the covered parts. The package assumes a standard approach and a general ward.

Bring

  • The Aarogyasri or health card
  • Aadhaar and ration card
  • A referral, where you have one

CGHS and ECHS

Central government and ex-servicemen's schemes pay at their own rates for surgery at recognised hospitals. A referral or permission letter is usually needed before admission, except in an emergency. Check whether your hospital is recognised for cancer surgery.

EHS

The Telangana Employees Health Scheme covers serving and retired state employees and their families for listed treatments at empanelled hospitals. As with Aarogyasri, the package rate defines what is paid, and extras above it may not be.

Cashless private insurance

The insurer approves an amount before admission and settles with the hospital directly. Room rent caps, co-payments, sub-limits and the waiting period for pre-existing illness all shape the approved figure.

Read the policy schedule, not the brochure. The limits are on the schedule.

Step by step

How does pre-authorisation actually work?

  1. The surgeon writes the plan

Diagnosis, the operation proposed, the approach, the expected stay and the estimate. This document is what the scheme or insurer judges.

  2. The insurance desk applies

The hospital sends the plan, your reports and your card or policy details to the scheme or insurer. For Aarogyasri and EHS this goes through the scheme's portal; for insurers, to their third-party administrator.

  3. The approval comes back

Usually within a few working days, with an approved amount or package and any conditions. A query may come back first asking for more reports. This is common and does not mean a refusal.

  4. You are told what remains

The desk should show you in writing what has been approved and what you would pay yourself, including any room rent gap or non-covered items. Ask for this before the surgery date is fixed.

  5. Final settlement at discharge

If the stay was longer or something extra was needed, an enhanced approval is requested. Whatever is not approved is billed to you at discharge, which is why the earlier steps matter.

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Typically

What is usually covered, and what usually is not?

Usually covered Often not, or only partly
The operation, anaesthesia and theatre charges within the package The extra cost of a robotic approach above the standard package
A general or scheme-category ward bed for the approved nights A private room above the room rent cap, and the knock-on share of other bills
Pathology on the removed gland and routine medicines during the stay Pads, catheter supplies at home and erection tablets after discharge
PSA tests and follow-up visits, under some schemes and policies Consumables and items the policy lists as non-payable

On the approval letter

What do the words on the policy and approval mean?

Pre-authorisation
Approval given before admission for a planned operation and an estimated amount. Without it, a cashless claim becomes a reimbursement claim you pay first.
Package rate
A fixed sum a scheme pays for a listed procedure, covering a set list of items and nights. Anything outside the list is extra.
Room rent cap
The most the policy pays per night for the room. Choosing a costlier room can reduce the share paid on every other line too.
Co-payment
A fixed percentage of every approved bill that the policy makes you pay, common in policies for older people.
Waiting period
The time after buying a policy before certain illnesses are covered. A prostate problem noted before the policy started may be treated as pre-existing.

Commonly believed

Four things families tell us, and what is actually true

"Aarogyasri means the whole treatment is free."

The covered parts usually are. But a robotic approach, a private room, pads at home and later erection treatment may sit outside the package. Ask the hospital's Aarogyasri desk for the exact list of what is approved before you assume nothing will be billed.

"We have insurance, so the room choice does not matter."

It often matters more than any other choice. If the policy caps room rent and you pick a room above the cap, many insurers reduce their share of the surgeon's fee, theatre and other charges in the same proportion. Check the cap before you choose.

"A query from the insurer means they are refusing."

A query is a request for more information, usually a report or a clarification from the surgeon. It is routine. Answer it quickly through the insurance desk. A refusal is a separate letter and can be appealed with the surgeon's help.

"We should not mention his old prostate problem to the insurer."

Hiding a past illness is the commonest reason a claim is rejected at discharge, when it is too late. Declare it. Many policies cover pre-existing illness after the waiting period, and the desk can check where you stand before admission.

Being straight with you

What can this page not tell you?

This page cannot tell you what your own card or policy will pay for your father's operation. Package lists change, insurers differ, and the approach the surgeon recommends changes the figure. Only a written pre-authorisation against your actual cover answers that.

It also cannot fix a policy that was never right

If the sum insured is small, the waiting period has not passed, or the prostate problem was not declared, the approval will reflect that. The insurance desk can tell you honestly where you stand, and can sometimes combine a scheme card with a private policy to close a gap. Ask.

What to do next

Bring the card or policy schedule and every report to the first visit. Ask the desk to apply for pre-authorisation as soon as the surgeon has written the plan, and ask for the approved amount and your share in writing. If any of it is unclear, call the helpline with the letter in front of you.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about cover for prostate surgery

Is CION empanelled with Aarogyasri and the other schemes?

Aarogyasri is accepted, as are CGHS, ECHS and EHS for eligible treatment, and most major cashless insurers are empanelled. Empanelment can be specific to a procedure or a centre, so call the helpline with your card details and we will confirm cover for a prostatectomy before you travel.

Will Aarogyasri pay for robotic surgery?

The scheme pays a package for prostate cancer surgery. Whether a robotic approach is covered within it, or only the standard approach, is a question for the hospital's Aarogyasri desk, and the answer can change. If there is a gap, ask what it is in writing before the date is fixed.

How long does pre-authorisation take?

Usually a few working days once the surgeon's plan and your reports are submitted. Queries add time. Start the process at the first visit rather than the week of surgery.

What if the insurer rejects the claim?

Ask for the reason in writing. Many rejections are about missing documents or undeclared history and can be appealed with the surgeon's letter. If cashless is refused, you may still be able to pay and claim reimbursement. The insurance desk will help you with both routes.

Can we use Aarogyasri and private insurance together?

Sometimes. A scheme can cover the package and a private policy can be asked to pay for items outside it, or the other way round. The rules differ by insurer and the paperwork is more involved. Tell the desk about every cover you hold so they can plan the best combination.

Are pads and catheter supplies covered after discharge?

Usually not by schemes, and rarely by private policies, because they are consumables used at home. Pads can be needed for months, so budget for them. Some policies cover post-hospitalisation medicines for a set period; check the schedule for what yours includes.

Does the follow-up PSA test come under the claim?

Some policies cover post-hospitalisation tests and visits for a period after discharge, and some schemes cover follow-up at the treating hospital. Others do not. Ask the desk whether follow-up is included, and keep every receipt in case a reimbursement claim is possible.

What documents should we carry on the day of admission?

The scheme card or policy schedule, Aadhaar, the pre-authorisation letter, all reports including the biopsy and MRI, and the surgeon's plan. If a family member is the policy holder, bring their identity proof as well.

What moves the figure

What affects the cost

Four things change the total more than anything else.

The technique used

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.

How many sessions

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Supporting tests

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.

Your cover

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.

Paying for it

Insurance, schemes and payment

What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
