How much does a sentinel node biopsy cost in Hyderabad?
A sentinel node biopsy rarely has a price of its own, because it is usually done in the same operation as the main cancer surgery. Its cost sits inside that bill, and what you actually pay depends most on your scheme or insurance.
Why there is no single figure
For breast cancer, the node biopsy is done alongside removal of the lump or the breast. For melanoma, it is done alongside a wider removal of the skin around the first biopsy scar. The main operation, the length of stay and the tests before surgery all change the total far more than the node biopsy does.
What the node biopsy itself adds
It adds a few specific items: the mildly radioactive tracer and the scan that maps it, the blue dye, the time and equipment used to find the node in theatre, and a more detailed laboratory examination of the node. Each of these can appear as its own line on the bill.

What goes into the bill for a sentinel node biopsy?
These are the parts to look for on an estimate. Not every centre lists them separately.
The tracer and mapping scan
A nuclear medicine department prepares and injects the tracer, and may take pictures to show where it drains. This is sometimes billed by a separate department or even a separate centre.
Theatre and anaesthesia
Operating time, the anaesthetist, the handheld probe that detects the tracer and the blue dye. Because the node biopsy is part of a larger operation, it adds time rather than a separate theatre charge.
The laboratory report
The node is examined in thin slices, sometimes with special stains.

When is the money actually spent?

Before the operation
Consultations, scans, blood tests and a heart check for the anaesthetic. Chemotherapy given before surgery is a separate course with its own bill.

The day before or the morning of surgery
The tracer is injected and the mapping scan is done. Most centres ask for a deposit or a pre-authorisation letter from your scheme or insurer before this point.

The operation and stay
Theatre, anaesthesia, the probe, the dye, the room, nursing and medicines. This is the bulk of the bill.

After you go home
The laboratory report, wound review visits and physiotherapy. If a node is positive, further surgery or radiotherapy may follow, each with its own cost. Travel from a district to Hyderabad is a real cost no estimate lists.
Schemes and insurance
Is a sentinel node biopsy covered by Aarogyasri, CGHS or insurance?
Usually yes, as part of an approved cancer surgery at an empanelled hospital. What you pay out of pocket depends more on your cover than on the operation itself.
Aarogyasri and the state schemes
Aarogyasri pays for listed cancer surgeries up to a package ceiling at empanelled hospitals, with approval taken before admission. Ask the scheme desk whether the tracer, the scan and the laboratory tests sit inside the package, or fall outside it.
CGHS, ECHS and EHS
These schemes for central government staff, ex-servicemen and Telangana government employees and pensioners use their own approved rates. Bring your card, your referral letter where one is needed, and the treatment plan.
Cashless insurance
Most insurers cover cancer surgery, but room rent limits, sub-limits and co-payment clauses change what you pay. Ask the hospital's insurance desk to raise pre-authorisation early, and ask which items the insurer usually refuses.
If you have no scheme or insurance
Ask whether the hospital offers a fixed package for the planned operation, and what it leaves out. Ask the social work or patient help desk about charitable support and government funds for cancer care. Bring every earlier report, so that tests are not repeated and paid for twice. A dated written estimate protects you from surprises.

What do families believe about the cost?
"Skipping the node biopsy will save money."
The node result decides the stage and the treatment after surgery. Without it, some people end up with a larger operation or treatment they did not need. The decision belongs to your treating team, not the budget alone.
"A cheaper quote elsewhere means the same operation."
Quotes differ in what they include. One may leave out the tracer, the laboratory work or the stay. Compare itemised estimates line by line, not the totals.
"Schemes do not cover the tracer and scan."
Many packages do include them when they are part of the approved cancer surgery. Ask the scheme desk in writing before admission, so there is no surprise at discharge.
"The estimate is the final bill."
An estimate is a planning figure. A longer stay, a positive node or an extra test can change it. Ask the billing desk to tell you before any change is made.

Common questions about sentinel node biopsy cost
Can I get a sentinel node biopsy quote on its own?
Usually not, because it is done as part of a larger cancer operation. Ask for an estimate for the whole planned surgery, with the node biopsy items shown. If your surgeon has not yet decided the main operation, the estimate will change once they do.
Does a positive node mean another bill?
It can. If further node surgery or radiotherapy is recommended, that is a separate treatment with its own cost. Many people with a positive node do not need a second operation. Ask your team what is likely before surgery so the family can plan.
Is the tracer scan billed by a different department?
Often, yes. Nuclear medicine may bill separately, and some hospitals send patients to another centre for the injection. Ask whether this charge is included in the surgical estimate, and whether your scheme or insurer needs a separate approval for it.
What documents does Aarogyasri need?
Usually the Aarogyasri card or eligible ration card, identity proof, the biopsy report and the treatment plan. The hospital's scheme desk raises the approval. Requirements change, so call the helpline or visit the scheme desk with your documents before admission.
Will my insurer pay for day-care surgery?
Most policies cover day-care cancer procedures that do not need an overnight stay. Check your policy wording for day-care cover, sub-limits and co-payment. The insurance desk can raise pre-authorisation once the surgeon has written the plan.
Can the bill change after I am admitted?
Yes. A longer stay, an extra test, a change of room or a finding during the operation can all change it. Ask the billing desk for an update each day if you are staying, and ask to be told before any optional item is added.
Are reviews and physiotherapy after surgery charged?
Post-operative reviews, dressing changes and physiotherapy may be charged separately from the surgical package. Ask how many review visits are included, and whether arm or leg exercises can be taught before discharge so fewer return trips are needed.
How do we compare two hospitals fairly?
Ask both for an itemised, dated estimate for the same planned operation, including the tracer, the laboratory work, room type and length of stay. Check which items each scheme or insurer will pay. The cheapest total may leave out items that appear later.

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
