Looking for clear information on surgical biopsy cost in Hyderabad? A surgical (or open) biopsy is when a surgeon removes either the whole lump or node — an excisional biopsy — or a piece of a larger mass — an incisional biopsy — in an operating theatre. It is used when a needle biopsy cannot give a clear answer, or when a whole node or lesion is needed, for example for suspected lymphoma. At CION Cancer Clinics, a surgical biopsy is performed by a surgical oncologist and reviewed by a tumour board. Your first consultation is free.
Starting from ₹20,000
The table below lists the two main types. There is no single price — it depends on the size and site, the type of anaesthesia and theatre time, and the laboratory work. Histopathology, and any IHC or molecular testing, is charged separately. A surgical biopsy generally costs more than a needle biopsy. Your exact, confirmed price is shared once your prescription and reports are reviewed.
| Surgical biopsy type | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Incisional biopsy (a sample of a larger lesion) | ₹20,000–25,000 |
| Excisional biopsy (whole lesion / node removed) | ₹20,000–25,000 |
Prices shown are indicative and may vary by site, image guidance and the pathology testing required. Histopathology and any special tests (IHC / molecular) are charged separately unless stated.
A surgical biopsy is usually recommended when less invasive needle biopsies have been inconclusive, when the whole of a lesion or node is required for diagnosis, or when removing an accessible lump serves as both diagnosis and treatment. It is done under local or general anaesthesia depending on the size and site.
CION Cancer Clinics performs and coordinates surgical biopsies across its centres in Hyderabad, supported by a wider network of 35+ partner centres across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, with the cost shared up front once your reports are reviewed. Because the procedure is planned by a surgical oncologist — with treatment in mind, not just diagnosis — there is less chance of a non-diagnostic sample and a repeat. For the wider picture of biopsy pricing, see our hub on Biopsy Cost in Hyderabad.
A surgical biopsy is often a second step — used when a needle biopsy has not given a clear answer — or a first step when the whole lesion or node is needed, such as for diagnosing lymphoma. (Source: U.S. National Cancer Institute — Diagnosis.)
An excisional biopsy removes the entire lump or lymph node — this gives the pathologist the most to work with and, for a small benign lesion, can be the treatment too. An incisional biopsy removes only a representative part of a larger mass, used when removing the whole thing is not practical or appropriate before a diagnosis is known. Your surgeon advises which suits your situation.
| Type | What is removed | Typically used when |
|---|---|---|
| Excisional | The whole lump or lymph node | The lesion is small and accessible, or a whole node is needed (such as for lymphoma) |
| Incisional | A representative piece of a larger mass | Removing the whole mass is not practical before a diagnosis is known |

A small, superficial biopsy may be done under local anaesthetic; deeper or larger ones are done under sedation or general anaesthesia in a sterile theatre. The wound is closed with stitches, and you are observed until you have recovered from the anaesthesia. If you are on blood thinners or anticoagulants, follow the advice of your doctor about whether to pause them before the procedure.
Recovery is usually short. Stitches are typically removed in about 7–14 days, and you will be given wound-care advice. There may be a small scar. Most people return to normal activities quickly, depending on the size and site of the biopsy.
A histopathology report usually takes about 3–7 working days; if IHC or molecular tests are added, the full result takes longer. At CION, the report is reviewed by a tumour board and explained to you with a clear next step, and you are welcome to a free written second opinion on an outside report.
A surgical biopsy gives a definitive answer when a needle biopsy cannot, and the generous tissue sample supports full typing and special tests such as IHC and molecular testing. If your biopsy raises a concern, CION's oncology team can guide the next step. To understand where this fits among the methods, see our guide to the types of biopsy.

When a needle biopsy was inconclusive, when a whole node is needed (such as for lymphoma), when a small lump can be removed as diagnosis and treatment, or when a lesion is awkward for a needle.

Because it uses an operating theatre, anaesthesia and a surgeon’s time, in addition to the laboratory work - more resources than a needle biopsy done in a clinic.
