Pain in a swollen lymph node soon after drinking alcohol is a rare but recognised sign of Hodgkin lymphoma. Only a small number of people with Hodgkin lymphoma notice it, so it proves nothing on its own, and its absence rules nothing out. If a lump hurts after a drink, see a doctor and say so clearly. The short answer
Is pain in a lymph node after drinking alcohol a sign of Hodgkin lymphoma?
It can be, but it is rare. A small number of people with Hodgkin lymphoma notice pain in a swollen node shortly after drinking alcohol, and most people with Hodgkin lymphoma never have it. If it happens to you, see a doctor and mention it clearly.
What the symptom looks like
People describe an ache or sharp pain in a lump in the neck, armpit or groin that starts within minutes of a drink. It can also be felt as pain in the chest or back, where swollen nodes cannot be seen. Even a small amount of alcohol can set it off. The pain usually fades as the alcohol wears off.
Why it gets attention despite being rare
Pain after alcohol is unusual in other causes of swollen nodes. So when it does happen, it is a clue worth passing on. Doctors do not fully understand why it occurs. One idea is that alcohol widens blood vessels inside the affected node, causing swelling and pressure. The exact reason does not change what you should do.

Which other signs matter more than the alcohol pain?
Most people with Hodgkin lymphoma are found because of one or more of these, not because of pain after a drink.
A lump that does not go away
A firm, rubbery swelling in the neck, above the collarbone, in the armpit or in the groin, usually not sore, with no infection to explain it.
Symptoms across the whole body
Doctors group three symptoms together because they say something about the illness.

- Weight loss without trying
Itching
Itching over much of the body, often with no rash, which can be severe and worse at night.
Chest symptoms
A cough that does not settle, breathlessness or chest discomfort, which can come from swollen nodes in the middle of the chest.

What else can cause pain after drinking?
Most pain after alcohol has nothing to do with lymph nodes. Before linking it to lymphoma, it helps to be clear about where the pain is.
Pain in the stomach or upper abdomen
Alcohol irritates the stomach lining and can inflame the pancreas or stir up gallbladder problems. This pain is usually in the upper abdomen, sometimes going through to the back, and may come with vomiting. It is a different problem and needs its own check.
A tender gland from a recent infection
A node already sore from a throat or tooth infection may simply feel more noticeable when you are dehydrated or run down. The pain is not linked each time to drinking and fades as the infection clears.
Headache, flushing and a racing heart
Some people react to alcohol with flushing, a headache or a fast heartbeat. These are common reactions to alcohol itself and do not point to lymphoma.

Do not test it again
There is no need to drink again to see whether it happens. What you have already noticed is enough to tell a doctor.
Write down the details
Note where the pain was, how soon it came after drinking, how long it lasted, and whether you can feel a lump there when the pain has gone.
See a doctor soon
Say plainly that a lump hurts after alcohol. Some doctors rarely see this symptom, so describing it clearly helps it get the attention it needs.
Ask about a biopsy if a lump is found
If the doctor finds an enlarged node with no clear cause, ask whether a biopsy is planned. That is the only test that confirms or rules out lymphoma.

Which words might you see if tests are done?
- Hodgkin lymphoma
- A type of lymphoma defined by particular large abnormal cells seen under the microscope. It is treated differently from non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
- Reed-Sternberg cells
- The large abnormal cells the pathologist looks for to confirm Hodgkin lymphoma.
- B symptoms
- Night sweats, fevers and unexplained weight loss. Their presence is recorded because it helps plan treatment.
- Excision biopsy
- Removing a whole lymph node in a small operation so it can be tested fully.
- Staging
- Working out where in the body the lymphoma is found, usually with a PET-CT scan. It guides the treatment plan.

What do people get wrong about this symptom?
"Pain after drinking proves it is Hodgkin lymphoma."
It proves nothing on its own. It is a clue that makes a doctor think of lymphoma and look further. Only a biopsy confirms the diagnosis.
"No pain after drinking means it cannot be lymphoma."
Most people with Hodgkin lymphoma never notice this symptom. A lump that lasts, night sweats, fevers, weight loss or itching still need a check whether or not alcohol causes pain.
"If I stop drinking, the problem goes away."
Avoiding alcohol may stop the pain, but it does nothing for whatever is causing the swollen node. The cause still needs to be found.
"Alcohol caused the lymphoma."
The pain is a reaction in a node that is already affected. It does not mean drinking caused the illness, and there is no reason to carry guilt about it.

What can this page not tell you?
This page cannot tell you whether you have lymphoma. A symptom this unusual is worth reporting, but it is not a diagnosis, and the cause of your pain may be something else entirely.
It cannot tell you about outlook or treatment
If Hodgkin lymphoma is confirmed, the plan depends on the stage, the exact type and your general health. Having had pain after alcohol does not by itself change the treatment. A haematologist explains this once the biopsy and scans are complete.
When to act sooner
If a lump comes with breathlessness, swelling of the face or arm, or trouble swallowing, go to the nearest emergency department or call 108 the same day. Do not wait for a clinic appointment in that situation.
Bring every report, scan and prescription you have to your first appointment, including old ones and any TB treatment you have taken. A written note of your symptoms and their dates helps the doctor far more than memory on the day.Questions we are asked
Common questions about node pain after alcohol
How common is alcohol-induced pain in Hodgkin lymphoma?
It is uncommon. Only a small minority of people with Hodgkin lymphoma describe it, and many doctors see it only occasionally. It is well known because it is so unusual in other illnesses, not because it happens often. Its absence tells you very little.
Does it happen with non-Hodgkin lymphoma too?
It has been described in other conditions, but it is most closely linked with Hodgkin lymphoma. Whatever the type, the advice does not change: a lump that hurts after alcohol, or any lump that lasts without a clear cause, needs a doctor's examination.
Can the pain be in the chest instead of a lump?
Yes. Some people feel it in the chest or back, where swollen nodes inside the body cannot be seen or felt. Chest pain has many causes, so this also needs a check. If chest pain is severe or comes with breathlessness, go to an emergency department.
How much alcohol does it take?
Often very little. People describe pain after a single drink or even a sip. The amount does not tell you anything about how serious the cause is. Do not drink more to test it; tell your doctor what you have already noticed.
Which doctor should I see first?
A general physician is a good first step. They can examine you, arrange blood tests and an ultrasound, and refer you for a biopsy if a node needs sampling. If a biopsy already shows lymphoma, a haematologist, a blood cancer specialist, should see you next.
Should I mention this if I do not usually drink?
Yes. Many people feel awkward talking about alcohol, especially in front of family. The doctor needs the symptom, not a judgement about drinking. Say where the pain was and how soon it came after the drink.
Will the doctor believe me if the lump is small?
A small lump can still matter, and this symptom is recognised in medical textbooks. If you feel it has not been taken seriously, ask directly whether lymphoma has been considered and whether an ultrasound or biopsy would help. A second opinion is also reasonable.
