The short answer

Why send relatives a family letter in Telugu?

A family letter tells a relative, in plain words, that an inherited fault has been found in the family and that they can be tested for it. Writing it in Telugu means parents, aunts and uncles can read it themselves, without someone translating over the phone. The gene name and the exact change stay in English, exactly as printed on the report.

What the letter does for you

It does the explaining so you do not have to. Many people find it hard to describe a genetic result, especially while dealing with cancer. A letter keeps the facts accurate, lets the relative read it in private and gives them something to take to their own doctor.

Why the English details still matter

Laboratories read reports in English. If the gene name or the change is translated, shortened or mistyped, the laboratory may test for the wrong thing. Copy those two lines letter for letter from the report, or attach a copy of the report page itself.

This template is a starting point. Ask your genetic counsellor to check it before you send it, and use their official letter if they give you one.

The essentials

What must a family letter say?

A good letter is short. It covers four things and leaves the rest to the counsellor.

The gene and the exact change

Written in English, copied exactly from the report. This is the one part a laboratory needs, and the one part that must never be paraphrased.

What it means, in plain words

That the change raises the chance of certain cancers, and that blood relatives may carry it too. Nothing more detailed than that.

What the relative can do

That a simple blood test can show whether they carry it, and that either answer is useful.

Either answer helps

  • Not carrying it usually means ordinary screening
  • Carrying it means earlier, closer checks

That the choice is theirs

A clear line saying they can decide in their own time, with the name of a counsellor or clinic they can contact.

Not sure whether this applies to you?

Copy and fill in

A family letter template you can use

Fill in the words in square brackets. Keep the gene and the change in English. Print it, or send it as a photo on WhatsApp to one relative at a time, never to a group.

The letter in Telugu

The same letter in English

Dear [relative's name],

Someone in our family has had a genetic test. It found a change in one gene. This change raises the chance of some types of cancer.

Blood relatives may carry the same change. A simple blood test can show whether you do. If you do not, this change adds no extra risk for you. If you do, you can have checks earlier, so that any cancer is found at an early stage.

Whether to be tested is entirely your choice. Please speak to a genetic counsellor first, and show this letter to your doctor.

Gene: [exactly as on the report]
Variant: [exactly as on the report]
Contact: [counsellor's name and clinic]

With love,
[your name]

Before you send it

How should you use the template?

Show it to your counsellor

They can check the wording, add the correct contact and sign it if their clinic allows. A signed letter carries more weight with another doctor.

Copy the gene details exactly

Take the gene name and the change straight from the report. Have a second person read them back to you to catch any slips.

Call before you send

A short phone call first, so the letter does not arrive out of nowhere. Say that it explains a family health matter and that there is no rush.

Send it to one person at a time

Each relative should receive their own copy privately. Keep a note of who has been sent one.

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Filling it in

What goes in each blank?

Relative's name
Use the form of address they would expect, such as the respectful garu in Telugu.
Gene
The short gene name, in capital letters, exactly as on the report.
Variant
The exact change, usually a string of letters and numbers. Copy it in full, including any dots and brackets.
Contact
The counsellor or clinic who can answer questions. One contact is enough.
Your name
So they know who to ask. You do not need to mention your own diagnosis.
Attachment
Optional. A copy of the report page showing the result, if the tested person agrees.

Commonly believed

Four things families assume about the letter

"The whole letter must be in English for the doctor."

Only the gene and the change need to be in English. The explanation can be in whichever language the relative reads most comfortably.

"I have to explain the whole diagnosis in the letter."

You do not. The letter is about the family fault, not your treatment. Say as much or as little about yourself as you wish.

"A WhatsApp message saying 'get tested' is enough."

Without the exact gene and change, a relative's doctor cannot order the right test. A short message without the details often leads to the wrong test, or none.

"Once the letter is sent, they have to get tested."

The letter informs. It does not oblige. Some relatives test quickly, some wait, and some decide not to. Each choice is theirs.

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell a relative what their own risk is, or which checks they would need if they carry the fault. That depends on the gene, their age, their sex and their own health. Only a counsellor or doctor who sees them can answer that.

It cannot explain your specific result

What your specific variant means is a question for the counsellor who ordered the test. The template is deliberately general. It should never be edited to include your own reading of the risk figures.

Who this does not apply to

Most people do not need this. If your test was negative, there is nothing to send. If it showed a variant of uncertain significance, meaning a change whose effect is not yet known, relatives are not usually tested and a letter would cause needless worry. A tumour result from the cancer tissue is also different, and is covered under targeted therapy.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about the family letter

Will my counsellor give me a letter anyway?

Many do, usually in English. If they do, send theirs and use this Telugu template alongside it as a covering note for relatives who read Telugu more easily. Ask them to check your Telugu version so the meaning matches.

Can I translate the gene name into Telugu?

No. Keep the gene name and the change in English, exactly as on the report. Laboratories use these to find the right spot to test. A translated or shortened name could lead to the wrong test being done.

Is it safe to send the letter on WhatsApp?

It is common and practical. Send it privately to one relative, not to a family group. Tell them first by phone, so it does not arrive as a shock. Ask them to keep it somewhere safe for their doctor.

What if an older relative cannot read at all?

Ask a trusted younger relative to read it aloud to them, with their permission. The written copy is still useful, because it can be shown to their doctor exactly as written.

Do I need to include my own diagnosis?

No. The letter only needs to say that a change was found in the family. Whether you mention your own illness is entirely up to you. Many people leave it out.

Should I send it to relatives by marriage?

Only to blood relatives. In-laws do not share your genes. Your spouse may still want to read it, because your children share genes from both of you.

Can a relative abroad use a Telugu letter?

Yes. Their doctor will rely on the English gene details, while the Telugu part explains why they are receiving it. For a relative abroad, attaching a copy of the report page is especially helpful.

Who can check my Telugu letter?

Your genetic counsellor is the best person to check the meaning. Call the CION helpline if you need counselling in Telugu or are not sure who to approach, and someone will point you to the right clinic.
