The short answer
How much does CDKN2A testing cost in Hyderabad?
It depends on who is being tested. The first person in a family is usually tested with a multigene panel, which is the larger cost. Once a fault is found, each relative is tested for that one change only, at a much lower price. Indicative ranges for both are set out below. Counselling before and after the test may be charged on top, so always ask for the full total.
Why CDKN2A is rarely tested on its own
Families with melanoma or pancreatic cancer can carry faults in other genes too, such as CDK4, BAP1, BRCA2, PALB2 or ATM. A panel checks these together, often for little more than a single gene would cost. Your counsellor chooses the panel that matches your family's pattern of illness.
The costs that come afterwards
A positive result leads to lifelong checks: skin examinations and, from middle age, scans of the pancreas. These repeat costs usually add up to more than the test itself. It is worth planning for them before you test, not after.

Comparing quotes
Why do quotes differ so much between labs?
Two prices can look very different and cover very different things. Ask what each one includes before comparing.
The number of genes
A small melanoma panel costs less than a broad hereditary cancer panel. Bigger is not always better, because more genes also means more uncertain findings that need explaining.
The laboratory's standards
Accredited laboratories with experienced reporting teams often charge more. Ask whether the lab is NABL or CAP accredited and whether it confirms positive findings.
Whether counselling is included
Some prices cover the test alone. Others include a session before and after with a genetic counsellor. A cheaper test without counselling can leave a family with a report nobody has explained.
Extra testing
Some faults need a second method to confirm them, such as a check for missing pieces of the gene. Ask whether that is included or charged separately. A quote that looks low can rise once it is added.

It cannot give you a quote. The figures above are ranges, and the price you pay depends on the laboratory, the panel and what is bundled with it. It also cannot interpret a result. What your specific variant means is a question for the counsellor who ordered the test.
What schemes and insurance usually cover
Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat mainly pay for treatment packages in hospital. Stand-alone tests for inherited risk are usually outside them. Most private health policies cover admissions rather than outpatient tests, though some pay when a result will guide treatment of an existing cancer. Read your policy wording before you test.
Who this does not apply to
Most people with one relative who had melanoma or pancreatic cancer at an older age do not need a CDKN2A test, and paying for one will not help them. A counsellor can tell you honestly whether your family history qualifies. A test on a tumour sample is a different, separately priced test, covered on our targeted therapy pages.

"The most expensive panel must be the best one."
A larger panel finds more uncertain results as well as more answers. The right panel covers the genes your family's pattern points to, and a counsellor can tell you which that is.
"Every relative needs the full panel too."
Once the family fault is known, relatives need only the single-change test, at a much lower price. Paying for a full panel for each person usually adds cost without adding answers.
"A cheap online DNA kit tells me the same thing."
Many consumer kits look at only a few spots in a gene and miss most CDKN2A faults. Their results are not counselled and would need confirming by a clinical laboratory anyway.
"If insurance will not pay, testing is out of reach."
Testing one carefully chosen relative first keeps the cost down, and relatives' tests are far cheaper. Ask whether the laboratory offers reduced prices for family members.

Common questions about the cost of CDKN2A testing
Is genetic counselling charged separately?
Sometimes. Some laboratories include a session before and after the test in the price, while hospitals may charge a consultation fee. Ask for the total, including counselling, so that you are comparing like with like between quotes.
Does Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover the test?
Usually not for a stand-alone test of inherited risk. These schemes mainly cover treatment packages in hospital. If a relative is already being treated for cancer under a scheme, ask the treating team whether any testing can be included.
Will my health insurance pay?
Most policies cover hospital admissions rather than outpatient tests, so many families pay themselves. Some policies with outpatient cover do pay, particularly when the result will guide treatment of an existing cancer. Check the wording with your insurer before the sample is taken.
How long does the report take?
A first panel usually takes several weeks, depending on the laboratory and whether extra confirmation is needed. A relative's test for a known change is often quicker. Your counsellor will give you an expected date and tell you how the result will be shared.
Can relatives give a sample outside Hyderabad?
Often, yes. Blood or saliva can be collected locally and sent to the laboratory, and counselling can be done by video. The relative will need a copy of the family's report, so the lab knows exactly which change to look for.
What if the relative who had cancer has died?
A stored tissue block from their surgery or biopsy can sometimes be tested. This costs more and does not always work. Your counsellor may suggest testing a living relative instead, and will explain what each option can and cannot tell you.
What will checks cost after a positive result?
Plan for skin examinations with a dermatologist, usually once or twice a year, and a pancreas scan once a year from middle age. The pancreas MRI range above gives a rough idea. Over many years, these repeat costs usually exceed the cost of the test.
