CHEK2 testing cost in Hyderabad: what families pay | CION Cancer Clinics
CHEK2 is rarely tested on its own. It is usually checked in a panel alongside other breast and ovarian cancer genes, and that panel is the main cost. Once a fault is found, testing each relative for that one change costs far less. The short answer
How much does a CHEK2 test cost in Hyderabad?
The first person in a family is usually tested with a panel that looks at CHEK2 alongside other breast and ovarian cancer genes. That panel is the main cost. Once a CHEK2 fault is found, each relative is tested for that one change only, which costs far less.
Why CHEK2 is rarely tested on its own
A family history of breast or prostate cancer can come from several different genes. Testing CHEK2 alone would leave BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2 and others unchecked. So laboratories in Hyderabad and across India usually include CHEK2 in a wider panel, and the price you are quoted is for the whole panel rather than for this one gene.
The two prices that matter
The first price is for the person being tested first, usually the relative who already has cancer. The second price is for everyone after them. Families often budget for the first and are surprised by how much smaller the second is. Planning for both at the start makes the family conversation easier.

These are broad ranges seen across laboratories and hospitals, not quotes. Your own figure depends on the lab, the test and your cover.

What the price should cover
What should a fair CHEK2 test price include?
- A counselling conversation before the sample is taken
- A blood or saliva sample, collected in Hyderabad or sent from your district
- A panel that checks for large missing or extra pieces of a gene, not only spelling changes
- A written report that names the variant and how it was classified
- A results appointment where the report is explained in Telugu, Hindi or English
- A family letter you can share with relatives who may need testing

Who pays
Will insurance or a government scheme pay for it?
Sometimes, but rarely in full. Ask before the sample is taken, not after the bill arrives.
Private health insurance
Most policies pay for tests linked to a hospital admission. A stand-alone genetic test done as an outpatient is often excluded. Some insurers will consider it when an oncologist states it will change treatment.
Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat
These schemes cover many cancer treatment packages. Genetic testing is usually not one of them. Scans and some surgery linked to cancer care may be covered, so ask the scheme desk what applies.
Employer and government staff schemes
CGHS, ECHS and some company schemes have their own lists. Bring the oncologist's written request, because a named reason helps. Approval can take time, so apply before the sample is collected.
Paying yourself
Many families pay the first test privately and share the cost of relatives' tests. Brothers and sisters often split the bill for the parent who is tested first, because the answer affects all of them. Ask for a written estimate that names the lab and the gene list.

What families assume about the cost, and what is true
"The cheapest lab gives the same answer."
Not always. Panels differ in which genes they cover and whether they look for large missing pieces. Ask what the test checks and whether a counsellor explains the result.
"Every relative needs the full panel."
Once the family's CHEK2 change is known, relatives are usually tested for that change alone. That is the cheaper test in the cost section above.
"A positive result means expensive surgery."
For most CHEK2 carriers the plan is closer screening. Preventive surgery is not routinely advised on a CHEK2 result alone. It is discussed only where the family history is strong.
"A home ancestry kit already checked CHEK2 for me."
Some consumer kits look at only a few named changes and miss the rest. A clear kit result does not rule out a CHEK2 fault. A clinical test ordered through a doctor is needed.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot give you a quote. Prices depend on the laboratory, the gene list and what your cover pays. A written estimate for your own situation is the only figure worth planning around.
It cannot tell you whether you need the test
That depends on who in the family had cancer, which cancer and at what age. A genetic counsellor or your oncologist will look at the family tree first. Sometimes the right step is to test a relative who has cancer rather than you.
Who this does not apply to
Most people do not need a CHEK2 test. One relative diagnosed at an older age, with no pattern of young or repeated cancers, is unlikely to justify the cost. A counsellor will tell you that as readily as they would recommend a test.
It cannot rank laboratories for you
A lower price is not always a worse test, and a higher one is not always better. What matters is which genes are covered, how large changes are looked for, and whether someone qualified explains the result. Ask those three questions of any lab before you pay, and compare the answers rather than the headline price.

Common questions about CHEK2 test costs
Can I ask for a CHEK2-only test to save money?
You can ask, but it is rarely the right first test. A family history that points to CHEK2 can also point to BRCA1, BRCA2 or PALB2. A panel checks them together, and testing them one by one often ends up costing more.
Why is my sister's test so much cheaper than mine was?
Your test searched many genes for any change. Hers looks only for the one CHEK2 change already found in you. The lab knows exactly where to look, so the work and the price are smaller.
Does the price include counselling?
It should, but check. Some labs send a report with no explanation. Ask whether a counsellor will see you before the sample and again when the result comes back. The conversation matters as much as the report.
Can the sample be collected in my district?
Often, yes. Many labs collect blood or saliva through a local centre and courier it. The counselling appointment can sometimes be done by video. Ask the helpline what is possible from your town before planning the journey.
Will Aarogyasri pay for the test?
Usually not for the genetic test itself. The scheme covers many cancer treatment packages, and some scans or surgery linked to cancer care may be covered. Ask the Aarogyasri desk before testing so you know what you will pay.
What if the result is unclear and needs more testing?
An unclear result, called a variant of uncertain significance, does not usually lead to more paid tests for you. Sometimes testing an affected relative helps clarify it. Ask whether that extra test would be charged before agreeing to it.
Can I pay for the test in instalments?
No. CION does not offer EMI on genetic tests. If cost is a worry, say so early. The counsellor can help you decide who in the family should be tested first, so money goes where it changes the most decisions.
How do I get an estimate for my family?
