How much does a PTEN test cost in Hyderabad?
A PTEN test in Hyderabad usually costs a few thousand rupees for a relative being checked for a known family fault, and more for the first person tested. The first test is either PTEN on its own or a wider panel of cancer genes that includes PTEN. The price depends mostly on which of those your doctor asks for.
Why the first test costs the most
The first person in a family has the whole gene read, letter by letter, and checked for missing or doubled pieces. Nobody yet knows what to look for, so the laboratory looks everywhere. Once a fault is found, every relative after that is checked for that one change only. That targeted test is far quicker and far cheaper.
The cost that families forget
The test is paid once. If it finds a PTEN fault, the carrier then needs yearly thyroid and skin checks, and later breast, bowel, womb and kidney checks, for life. Those repeat costs usually add up to more than the test itself. It is worth thinking about both before the sample is taken, so that the result does not arrive with a bill nobody planned for.

These are broad ranges seen across laboratories, not quotes. Your own figure depends on the lab, the test ordered and your cover.

What makes one PTEN test cost more than another?
Two quotes can look very different and still be fair. These are the things that move the figure.
How many genes are read
A single gene costs less than a panel. A panel is sometimes the right choice, because breast and thyroid cancer in a family can come from more than one gene.
Whether deletions are checked
Some PTEN faults are a missing chunk of the gene rather than a spelling error. A good test looks for both. A cheap quote that leaves this out can miss a real fault.

Whether counselling is included
Some prices include a session with a genetic counsellor before and after the test. Others are the laboratory fee alone. The counselling is not an extra. It is how the result gets explained properly.

Results usually take a few weeks. A faster result can cost more, and is worth paying for only when it will change an urgent treatment decision, such as the type of breast surgery.

See a counsellor first
A counsellor decides whether PTEN testing is needed at all, and which test fits. That step alone prevents many unnecessary tests.
Test the right person first
Where possible, the relative who has had cancer or has the typical features is tested first. If they are negative, well relatives usually need no test.
Use the family result for everyone else
Once a fault is found, relatives take the cheaper targeted test. Bring a copy of the first report so the lab knows exactly what to look for.
Ask about family pricing
Some laboratories test relatives at a reduced price for a limited time after the first positive result. It is always worth asking.
Plan for the checks that follow
Ask for a rough yearly figure for thyroid, skin and later breast and bowel checks. Families coming from the districts often save by booking several checks on one trip.

It cannot give you a quote. Prices change, laboratories change their panels, and the right test depends on the person being tested. The ranges above are there so that a figure you are given does not come as a shock. They are not for comparing labs on price alone, because accreditation, deletion testing and counselling matter as much as the number.
It cannot tell you whether the test is worth it for you
That depends on the features and the family history, which a counsellor has to see. What a positive or uncertain result would mean for you is a question for the counsellor who orders the test. A cheaper test that answers the wrong question is not a saving.
Who this does not apply to
Most people with a single thyroid nodule, a few skin tags or one relative with breast cancer later in life do not need PTEN testing. All of those are common on their own. Testing becomes worth the money when several PTEN features appear together, or the family pattern is unusual. A counsellor will tell you honestly if it is not needed.

"The most expensive test must be the best one."
A bigger panel is not always better. For a clear PTEN picture, a single-gene test can answer the question for less and with fewer uncertain findings.
"Every relative needs the full test the first person had."
Relatives only need the targeted test for the fault already found. That is one of the biggest savings a family can make.
"Health insurance will pay for the test."
Many policies do not pay for genetic tests in a well person. Ask your insurer in writing before you test, not after.
"A cheaper lab gives the same result."
Sometimes it does. But a quote that skips deletion testing or counselling can miss a fault or leave you with a report nobody explains.

Common questions about the cost of PTEN testing
Does Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover PTEN testing?
Stand-alone genetic tests are usually not covered. Treatment for a cancer that is found, and some scans, may be. Ask the scheme desk at the hospital to check your own entitlement before you plan around it.
Is counselling charged separately?
It depends on where you are tested. Some laboratories include a session before and after the test, while hospitals often charge a consultation fee. Ask for both figures in writing so you can compare fairly.
How long do PTEN results take?
Usually a few weeks for a first test, and often less for a relative's targeted test. If a result could change surgery or treatment that is already being planned, tell the counsellor so the timing can be discussed.
Is a blood sample enough, or is saliva used?
A blood sample is standard, and some laboratories accept saliva. Either can be collected in Hyderabad and sent on, so you do not need to travel to the laboratory itself.
Can we test a relative who has died?
Sometimes. If they had surgery, a stored tissue block from the hospital may still be tested. This can cost more and is not always possible, so ask the counsellor before arranging it.
What does it cost if the result is uncertain?
An uncertain result costs nothing extra in itself. It should not trigger extra scans or surgery. Ask how you will be told if the laboratory later reclassifies it, and whether any repeat review is charged.
Are children tested at the same price?
Yes, a child is tested the same way as an adult. PTEN is one of the conditions where testing children can help, because thyroid checks start young. Your counsellor will explain when it makes sense.
