About Soft Tissue Sarcoma
Soft tissue sarcomas are uncommon cancers of muscle, fat, nerves, and connective tissue, occurring anywhere in the body but most often in the limbs. A painless enlarging lump is the usual presentation. Treatment is surgery-led, with radiation and chemotherapy by subtype and grade.
Symptoms of Soft Tissue Sarcoma
- A growing lump, often painless
- A lump larger than 5 cm or deep to muscle
- Pain if nerves or bone are involved
- Abdominal fullness for internal (retroperitoneal) sarcomas
Risk Factors
- Prior radiation therapy
- Certain inherited syndromes (Li-Fraumeni, NF1)
- Chronic lymphoedema
- Some chemical exposures
- Most cases have no identifiable cause

When should a lump be checked?
Any lump that is bigger than a golf ball, growing, deep, or recurrent after removal should be imaged before any surgery is attempted.
Why does biopsy planning matter?
The biopsy track must be excised with the tumour at the final operation. Unplanned removal ("whoops surgery") makes curative treatment harder — see a sarcoma team first.
Is amputation common?
No — most limb sarcomas today are treated with limb-sparing surgery combined with radiation, reserving amputation for rare situations.
