About penile cancer

Penile cancer is an uncommon cancer of the skin and tissues of the penis, usually squamous cell type and frequently linked to HPV and poor hygiene. Early lesions can be treated with organ-preserving approaches; advanced disease needs wider surgery and lymph-node treatment.

Signs to watch for

  • A growth, ulcer, or sore on the penis that does not heal
  • Bleeding or foul-smelling discharge
  • Thickening or colour change of the skin
  • Swollen groin lymph nodes

Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.

Who is at higher risk

  • HPV infection
  • Phimosis and poor local hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions of the foreskin
  • Weakened immunity

Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.

How it’s diagnosed

Clinical examination and a biopsy of the lesion confirm the diagnosis. Ultrasound or MRI assesses depth, and groin nodes are evaluated clinically and with imaging.

Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team at CION Kukatpally.

Your plan depends on the type and stage of the cancer and on your overall health. CION’s tumour board agrees on it with you.

Common questions

Tap a question to see the answer.

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1Can the penis be preserved?

For small, early lesions, yes — organ-preserving techniques are standard where margins allow. Early consultation widens the options.

2Is circumcision protective?

Childhood circumcision and good hygiene markedly reduce risk. Adult circumcision is also part of treating some early lesions.

3Why are groin nodes so important?

Penile cancer spreads first to the groin nodes, and treating them correctly is one of the strongest factors in cure. Do not delay if a groin swelling appears.

4Where is penile cancer treated near Kukatpally?

You can see a CION specialist for penile cancer at CION Kukatpally (Inside OMNI Hospitals, Mumbai Hwy, Opp. Big Bazaar, Balaji Nagar, Kukatpally, Hyderabad, Telangana 500072).
