Rectal Cancer treatment in Kukatpally

Rectal cancer occurs in the last portion of the large bowel. Because the rectum sits in the narrow pelvis close to other organs, treatment sequencing matters: many patients receive radiation with chemotherapy before surgery to shrink the tumour and improve the chance of sphincter-preserving operations.

About rectal cancer

Rectal cancer occurs in the last portion of the large bowel. Because the rectum sits in the narrow pelvis close to other organs, treatment sequencing matters: many patients receive radiation with chemotherapy before surgery to shrink the tumour and improve the chance of sphincter-preserving operations.

Signs to watch for

  • Bleeding with stools
  • Urgency or feeling of incomplete evacuation
  • Narrow, ribbon-like stools
  • Pelvic or rectal pain
  • Change in bowel habit
  • Unexplained weight loss

Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.

Who is at higher risk

  • Age above 50
  • Polyps and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Family history or inherited syndromes
  • Diet high in red and processed meat
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Obesity

Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.

How it’s diagnosed

Digital rectal examination and colonoscopy with biopsy establish the diagnosis. Pelvic MRI defines local extent; CT and PET-CT check for spread before planning treatment.

Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team at CION Kukatpally.

Common questions

Tap a question to see the answer.

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1Can the anal sphincter be saved?

Often, yes — especially when radiation and chemotherapy are given first to shrink the tumour. The feasibility depends on how close the tumour is to the sphincter.

2Why is radiation given before rectal surgery?

Pre-operative chemo-radiation lowers the chance of the cancer returning in the pelvis and can downsize the tumour, making a better operation possible.

3How is rectal cancer different from piles?

Both can bleed, which is why persistent bleeding needs examination. A simple proctoscopy or colonoscopy distinguishes the two reliably.

4Where is rectal cancer treated near Kukatpally?

You can see a CION specialist for rectal cancer at CION Kukatpally (Inside OMNI Hospitals, Mumbai Hwy, Opp. Big Bazaar, Balaji Nagar, Kukatpally, Hyderabad, Telangana 500072). Consultations, tests, biopsies and day-care chemotherapy are done there; surgery and radiation are arranged at partner centres. Call 1800 202 8726 to book.

5Is the tumour board review free?

Yes. Every case is discussed by CION’s tumour board of specialists from all its centres, at no charge. Tests and treatment are paid for separately, and you get a written estimate first.
