About testicular cancer
Testicular cancer mainly affects young men between 15 and 40 and is one of the most curable solid cancers, even when it has spread. Treatment starts with surgical removal of the affected testis, followed by surveillance, chemotherapy, or radiation depending on type and stage.
Signs to watch for
A painless lump or swelling in a testis
A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
Dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin
Sudden fluid collection in the scrotum
Breast tenderness (hormone-producing tumours)
Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.
Who is at higher risk
Undescended testis (even after correction)
Family or personal history of testicular cancer
Certain intersex conditions
Age 15-40
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
Scrotal ultrasound plus tumour markers (AFP, beta-hCG, LDH) establish the diagnosis; CT staging follows. Biopsy through the scrotum is avoided — diagnosis is confirmed at surgery.
Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team at CION Kukatpally.

Who treats testicular cancer at CION
Medical, surgical and radiation oncologists plan your care, and CION’s tumour board of 17 specialists reviews every case. Doctors you can see at Kukatpally are marked.
Medical oncologists 6
Treat cancer with medicines, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy.
One healthy testis usually maintains hormones and fertility. Sperm banking before chemotherapy is offered as a precaution, and prosthesis placement is possible.
2Why not biopsy the lump first?
Cutting into the scrotum risks spreading tumour cells along a new path. Ultrasound and blood markers are reliable, and the testis is removed through the groin as both diagnosis and treatment.
3Is it curable if it has spread?
Testicular cancer responds exceptionally well to chemotherapy, and cure is the goal even in many metastatic cases.
