About gallbladder cancer
Gallbladder cancer arises in the wall of the gallbladder and is relatively more common in northern and eastern India. It is often associated with long-standing gallstones. Early tumours found at gallstone surgery are curable; advanced disease is managed with surgery where possible and chemotherapy.
Who is at higher risk
- Long-standing gallstones
- Porcelain (calcified) gallbladder
- Gallbladder polyps above 1 cm
- Chronic typhoid carrier state
- Female sex and obesity
- Certain bile-duct anomalies

How it’s diagnosed
Ultrasound raises suspicion; contrast CT/MRI defines the extent and PET-CT checks for spread. Some cancers are discovered on histology after routine gallbladder removal.

No — gallbladder cancer is rare even among people with stones. Large stones, a non-functioning or calcified gallbladder, and large polyps carry higher risk and merit surgical discussion.
2My gallbladder report after stone surgery mentions cancer. What now?
A second, completion operation is often recommended depending on the depth of invasion. Bring your histopathology report to a surgical oncologist without delay.
3Is jaundice in gallbladder cancer treatable?
Jaundice can usually be relieved with endoscopic or percutaneous stenting, improving comfort and enabling further treatment.
