How much does a mastectomy cost in Hyderabad?
There is no single price. The bill depends on the type of mastectomy, how much of the armpit is operated on, whether reconstruction is added, the room you choose and how long you stay. For families with Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance, the amount paid from pocket is usually far lower than the full bill.
Why two quotes can look so different
One hospital may quote only the operation. Another may include tests, the pathology report, medicines and the room. Before comparing figures, ask each centre exactly what the estimate covers and what it leaves out.
The operation is only part of the cost
Most women with breast cancer need more than surgery. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone tablets or targeted drugs may follow, and each is billed separately. Planning for the whole course matters more than the price of one operation.

Which kind of mastectomy costs more?
These bands show how the bill rises with the size of the operation. They are a guide, not a price.
Lower band
Simple mastectomy with sentinel node biopsy
The breast is removed with the first few lymph nodes from the armpit. A shorter operation and usually a short stay.
Middle band
Modified radical mastectomy
The breast is removed with more lymph nodes from the armpit. Longer theatre time, a drain and often a longer stay.
Higher band
Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction
A plastic or oncoplastic surgeon rebuilds the breast in the same operation, with an implant or your own tissue. Much longer surgery and stay.
Indicative only, for 2026. Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and EHS are accepted, and most cashless insurers are empanelled. In those cases your out-of-pocket cost is usually very different from the full bill. Call the helpline for an estimate against your own cover.
Reading the estimate
What goes into a mastectomy bill?
Ask for the estimate broken down into these parts. It makes two hospitals easier to compare.
Tests before surgery
Blood tests, a heart tracing, a chest X-ray and sometimes a scan to check spread. Tests already done elsewhere may not need repeating, so bring every report.
Surgeon, theatre and anaesthesia
The fees of the surgical team and the anaesthetist, the operation theatre and the equipment used. This rises with the length of the operation.
Room and nights in hospital
A general ward, twin sharing or a private room changes the bill noticeably. Some insurance policies limit the room you can choose.
Pathology after surgery
The removed tissue is examined to confirm the stage and the margins. Extra tests on the tissue may be needed.

Schemes and insurance
How much will you actually pay with a scheme or insurance?
For many families in Telangana, the amount paid from pocket is small or nothing for the operation itself. What you pay depends on which scheme or policy you hold and what it includes.
Government schemes
Aarogyasri covers breast cancer surgery for eligible families at empanelled hospitals. CGHS serves central government employees and pensioners, ECHS serves ex-servicemen and their families, and EHS serves Telangana government employees and pensioners. Each needs approval from the scheme before the operation.
Private insurance
Most health policies cover mastectomy, and many allow cashless treatment. Check the room limit, any co-payment, and whether reconstruction or a breast form is included. Some policies treat reconstruction differently.
If you have no cover
Ask the hospital for a written package estimate and what would change it. Ask whether tests done elsewhere can be accepted. Our team can help you check whether you qualify for a scheme you have not yet applied for.
Commonly believed
What do families wrongly believe about the cost?
"The most expensive hospital must give the safest operation."
Price reflects the room, the city and the facilities as much as the surgery. Ask about the surgical team's experience with breast cancer and whether cases are discussed at a tumour board.
"A bigger operation is always better value."
A more extensive operation is not automatically safer for your cancer. It costs more and can bring more side effects, such as arm swelling. The right operation is the one your reports call for.
"We should wait until we have saved enough money."
Delaying treatment can let the cancer grow and make later treatment larger and costlier. Check scheme eligibility and insurance first. Help is often available sooner than families expect.
"Insurance will pay everything once it approves."
Approval covers what the policy includes. Room upgrades, some consumables and items outside the package may still be charged. Ask the insurance desk what will not be covered.

Biopsy report, receptor results, mammogram, ultrasound and any scan. The type of operation cannot be judged without them.

See the surgeon
The surgeon decides which mastectomy is needed and whether reconstruction is possible. The estimate follows from that decision.

Ask for a written estimate
Ask for a breakdown by room type, and what would change the figure, such as a longer stay or extra tests.

Check your cover
Take your scheme card or insurance details to the insurance desk. They will request approval and tell you what is left to pay.

Plan for what follows
Ask your oncologist whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy is likely, so the family can plan for the full course, not only the operation.
Beyond the operation
What costs come after the mastectomy?
Families often budget for the operation and are surprised by what follows. Knowing what to expect helps you plan and ask for help early.
Further treatment
Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted drugs and hormone tablets are decided after the pathology report. Each is costed on its own. Schemes and insurance usually cover these too, under separate approvals.
Everyday items
A breast form and a mastectomy bra, dressings after discharge, and physiotherapy for the arm are small costs that add up. Travel from a district for follow-up visits also matters.
Follow-up
Regular clinic visits and imaging continue for years. Ask how often you will need to come and which tests are likely, so these costs do not arrive unexpectedly.
Who this page does not fit well
If the cancer has already spread beyond the breast and armpit, surgery may not be the first treatment, and the costs look very different. The same is true if you need a second operation or have other serious health problems that need extra care around the anaesthetic. Ask for an estimate built around your own plan.

Common questions about mastectomy cost in Hyderabad
Why can't the hospital tell me the exact cost on the phone?
Because the operation depends on your reports. The surgeon must first decide whether a simple or modified radical mastectomy is needed and whether reconstruction is an option. A figure given without that would likely be wrong. Share your reports and the team can give a much closer estimate.
Does Aarogyasri cover a mastectomy?
Breast cancer surgery is included in Aarogyasri for eligible families at empanelled hospitals. The hospital applies for approval before the operation. Bring your card and reports to the Aarogyasri help desk. Coverage details and limits are set by the scheme, so confirm them for your own case.
Is reconstruction covered by insurance?
Many policies cover reconstruction after cancer surgery, because it is part of treatment, not a cosmetic choice. Some exclude it or limit it. Ask your insurer in writing, and ask the hospital insurance desk to include it in the approval request.
Does a private room change the whole bill?
Often, yes. In many hospitals the room category affects not only the room charge but also some other charges. Insurance policies may have a room limit, and choosing a higher room can mean paying a share of the whole bill. Ask before you choose.
Is there an extra cost if a second operation is needed?
Sometimes a second operation is needed, for example to remove more lymph nodes or treat a wound problem. This is usually billed separately. Ask the hospital how such situations are handled and whether your scheme or insurance covers them.
Can the cost of chemotherapy be included in the same estimate?
Not usually, because chemotherapy is decided after the pathology report. You can ask your oncologist for a likely plan and a separate estimate once the report arrives. Schemes and insurance generally approve chemotherapy separately from the operation.
Do we need to pay a deposit?
For cashless insurance or a government scheme, a deposit is often not needed once approval is received. Without cover, most hospitals ask for an advance at admission. Ask the billing desk what is required and when, so there are no surprises on the day.
Is the cost different for men?
The operation for men is similar, and the bill is built the same way: tests, theatre, room, stay and pathology. Reconstruction is rarely part of it. Schemes and insurance cover breast cancer surgery for men in the same way as for women.

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
