Where can you find a stoma nurse or support group in Telangana?
Start with the hospital where your operation was done. Its stoma nurse or surgical team is your first line of support, and they usually know which suppliers, clinics and patient groups are active near you.
What support looks like in Hyderabad
Larger hospitals in the city are more likely to have a nurse trained specifically in stoma care, sometimes called an enterostomal therapy or ET nurse. They fit bags, teach families, and sort out leaks and sore skin. Some also run or know of groups where people with a stoma meet and talk.
What support looks like in the districts
Many district towns have no dedicated stoma nurse. Your local surgeon, a general nurse or the supplier may answer questions instead, and that often works well for routine care. For fitting problems that keep coming back, a visit to a city clinic or a video call with a trained nurse may be needed.

What kinds of stoma support exist?
No single person covers everything. Most people draw on several of these at different times.
Stoma nurse
Teaches changes, measures the stoma, chooses and adjusts the bag, and treats sore skin and leaks.
When to see one

Your surgical team
Handles anything to do with the operation itself: a stoma that changes colour, a bulge, a blockage, bleeding or a planned reversal. They also decide about further treatment.
Patient groups
People who have lived with a stoma for years share tips no textbook has, from draping a saree to fasting. Some meet in person; others run phone or messaging groups.
Suppliers and product advice lines
Local dealers stock and deliver bags. Some makers run advice lines, often printed on the box. They can suggest products, but a fitting problem still needs a nurse.
Counsellor and dietitian
A counsellor helps with low mood, fear and family strain. A dietitian helps with food, fluids and weight, especially with an ileostomy.

How do you set up support if you live outside Hyderabad?
Before you leave hospital
Get the exact product names and sizes in writing, plus the numbers for the stoma nurse and surgical team. Ask whether they offer phone or video follow-up.
Find a supplier
Ask which dealer delivers to your town, and how long delivery takes. Keep a spare stock so a delay never leaves you without bags.
Brief a local doctor
Share the discharge summary with your family doctor or local surgeon, so they can handle simple problems and know when to send you back.
Join a group
Ask the stoma nurse about groups for people with a stoma. A phone or messaging group connects you with others even if none meets nearby.
Combine city visits
Book stoma checks on the same day as your cancer follow-up in Hyderabad, so one journey covers both.

Commonly assumed
What do people assume about stoma support that is not true?
"Only city patients can get proper stoma help."
Trained stoma nurses are more common in cities, but much support can reach you at home: phone and video advice, delivered supplies, messaging groups and a local doctor who knows your history. Plan the gaps with your hospital before discharge.
"The shop that sells the bags can sort out any problem."
Dealers know their products and can be very helpful. They have not examined your stoma or your skin. For repeated leaks, broken skin or a stoma that changes size or shape, see a nurse or the surgical team.
"Support groups are only for people who are not coping."
Many members manage well and come for practical tips and company. Hearing how others went back to work, travelled or married is often the most reassuring part.
"Once the wound heals, I will not need a stoma nurse again."
A stoma usually shrinks as it settles after surgery, and bodies change with weight, age and further treatment. An occasional check catches small fit problems before they damage the skin.

What should you expect from the support around you?
Support for people with a stoma is uneven across Telangana. Some families find a trained nurse, a helpful supplier and a group within days. Others find only one of the three. Knowing that in advance makes it easier to plan.
Ask, and keep asking
Nurses and surgeons are busy, and quiet patients are easily overlooked. If a leak has happened several times, say so plainly and ask for a fitting check. If you do not understand an instruction, ask for it in writing, in Telugu if that helps.
Use every visit well
Carry one folder: the discharge summary, the product list and a note of problems since the last visit. Photos of the stoma and skin taken on your phone help a nurse judge changes that are hard to describe.
What this support does not replace
A group or a supplier is not a substitute for medical care when something changes suddenly. A stoma that turns dark, stops working with vomiting, or bleeds heavily needs the surgical team or an emergency department the same day.

Common questions about stoma support in Telangana
Can I see a stoma nurse in Hyderabad if my surgery was elsewhere?
Some hospitals see outside patients in their stoma or wound clinics, usually by appointment. Call ahead, say you have a stoma from surgery elsewhere, and bring your discharge summary and product list. You can also call the CION helpline, and we will help you reach the right specialist.
Are there stoma support groups in Hyderabad?
Groups for people with a stoma have run in several Indian cities, often through patient associations. What is active changes over time, so ask the stoma nurse at your hospital or your supplier. If no group meets near you, ask about phone or messaging groups, which suit people in the districts well.
Can a stoma nurse help over a video call?
For many problems, yes. A nurse can watch a change, look at the skin, check the fit and suggest a different product over video. Good light and a clear close-up help. Some problems, such as measuring a changing stoma or checking for a bulge, still need to be seen in person.
Where can I buy stoma supplies outside Hyderabad?

Who should I call if my stoma looks different at night?
If the stoma turns dark or black, stops working with pain and vomiting, or bleeds heavily from inside, go to the nearest emergency department. For less urgent changes, such as sore skin or a leak, call the stoma nurse or surgical team in the morning. Keep both numbers saved on your phone.
Do Aarogyasri or insurance cover stoma nurse visits?

Can a family member attend stoma training instead of the patient?
Yes, and it helps when both learn. If the patient is too weak or elderly, the family member who will do the changes should attend and practise. Ask the nurse to watch you do a full change before you take over at home.
Can I talk to someone with a stoma before my operation?
Often, yes. Many stoma nurses can put you in touch with a volunteer who lives with a stoma and is willing to talk. Hearing how they manage work, food and family can ease the fear before surgery. Ask at your pre-surgery visit or at the stoma siting appointment.
