A number on its own tells you almost nothing. What decides your bill is which operation, which room category, and what has to be added once the surgeon sees the tissue. Ask for the estimate in writing, itemised, before you are admitted.

Why the figures you find online disagree

3“Mastectomy” is not one operationThe cards above are why. A simple mastectomy, one with node clearance and one with reconstruction are three different lengths of surgery. Quoting them as one figure is what produces those very wide ranges.

Whose figures these are. These are indicative starting points for Hyderabad, compiled from ranges published by hospitals across the city. They are not CION quotations, and they are not what you will pay. Each assumes a general ward and the planned number of nights. None includes implants, frozen section, laboratory tests on the removed tissue, physiotherapy or the follow-up visits, all listed further down. Your own figure comes from a written estimate after a consultation.

What a surgery bill is actually made of

Every line below appears on a real estimate. Knowing the names is what lets you ask whether each one is in the figure you were quoted.

The operating fee, set by the length and complexity of the procedure.
Anaesthesia
The anaesthetist’s fee, plus drugs and gases. Longer operations cost more here.
Operating theatre
Theatre time, staffing, disposables and instruments. Usually charged by the hour.
Room and nursing
Per day, by category. The biggest thing you control, and the biggest swing.
Pathology on the removed tissue
Examining what was taken out, margins included. Sometimes billed separately.
Medicines and consumables
Everything used during the stay. Billed on use, so it is an estimate.
Pre-operative tests
Bloods, ECG, chest X-ray and the anaesthetic review. Often billed separately.

Ask for this list, itemised, in writing. Any hospital will provide it, and comparing two hospitals is only meaningful once you have the same seven lines from both. A single total from one and a single total from the other tells you nothing.

What is usually not in the number you were quoted

This is where the shock comes from. Almost nobody is misled about the operation itself — they are surprised by what arrives afterwards.

Three things move the number more than anything else

The largest single swing, and the one you choose. The room rate is charged per day, and it carries nursing and much of the routine care with it. That multiplies across every night of the stay.

Worth knowing: a lower category does not change the operation, the surgeon or the theatre. It changes the room. Many families spend more here than they intended simply because nobody offered them the choice explicitly.
