Is genetic testing covered by Ayushman Bharat? | CION Cancer Clinics
Usually not on its own. Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY pays for hospital treatment packages, and a stand-alone test for an inherited cancer gene fault is generally not one of them. The card can still carry much of the cancer care around the test. This page explains what the scheme covers, where genetic testing falls outside it, and how families in Telangana plan for the gap. The short answer
Does Ayushman Bharat pay for a genetic test?
Usually not on its own. Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is cashless cover for hospital care, worth up to five lakh rupees per family each year, and it pays through a fixed list of treatment packages. A test for an inherited cancer gene fault is a laboratory test, usually done as an outpatient, and it is generally not on that list.
Why the test falls outside the packages
Each package pays a set amount for a set piece of hospital care, such as an operation or a course of chemotherapy. The tests done during that admission are folded into the package. An inherited gene test is different. It is ordered after counselling, sent to a specialist laboratory, and it usually happens without anyone being admitted.
What the card can still carry
For a family facing cancer, the card still matters a great deal. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for the person who is ill are covered at empanelled hospitals when they fall under a listed package. That can leave more of the family's own money for the one test the scheme does not pay for.

What is the scheme actually built to pay for?
Most confusion comes from treating the card as general health insurance. It is narrower than that, and it works well inside its own lane.
Hospital admissions
PM-JAY pays for care that needs a hospital bed or a procedure, at a hospital that has joined the scheme. Cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiation all have their own packages.
Where a gene test sits
An inherited gene test is an outpatient laboratory test. It answers a question about family risk, sometimes about treatment, and it is rarely part of an admission.

Who holds a card
Eligibility comes from government lists of families, not from a diagnosis. Senior citizens aged seventy and above can now get a card whatever their income. In Telangana the scheme runs alongside Aarogyasri.
ABHA is something else
The Ayushman Bharat Health Account number is a digital health record ID. It can hold your reports if you choose, but it is not insurance and it pays for nothing.

How do families plan for a test the scheme does not cover?
Ask the scheme desk first
Every empanelled hospital has a help desk for PM-JAY patients, often staffed by an Arogya Mitra. Ask what the current package list says about genetic testing, and get the answer in writing if you can.
Ask why the test is needed now
If the result could change treatment that is about to start, it is more urgent. If it is about risk for relatives, there is usually time to plan and save.
Test the right person first
The relative who already has cancer is tested first. If a fault is found, other relatives need a much cheaper test for that one known change.
Look for free or subsidised routes
Some research studies, charitable programmes and laboratory sponsored programmes offer testing to families who qualify. Your counsellor will know which ones are open.

The words you will hear, in plain language
- PM-JAY
- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, the hospital cover part of Ayushman Bharat. It is what people mean by the Ayushman card.
- Empanelled hospital
- A hospital that has signed up to treat scheme patients. The card only works at these hospitals.
- Package
- A fixed payment for a set piece of care, such as one operation. If something is not in a package, the scheme does not pay for it.
- Arogya Mitra
- The scheme helper at the hospital desk who checks your card and explains what is covered.
- Germline test
- A test on blood or saliva for a gene fault present from birth. This is the inherited test the scheme usually leaves out.
- Out-of-pocket
- The money the family pays itself, after the scheme or insurance has paid its share.

What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what the package list says today. The scheme's lists and rates are revised, and hospitals apply them case by case. Only the scheme desk at the hospital treating you can confirm what your card will pay for this month.
It cannot tell you whether your card is active
Cards are linked to family lists, and names are sometimes missing or misspelt. Check your status at the desk or through the official scheme website before you rely on it for treatment.
Who this does not apply to
Most people with cancer in the family do not need a genetic test at all, so for most families the cost question never arises. A counsellor will tell you honestly if testing is unlikely to change anything for you. If you are already holding a gene report, what your specific variant means is a question for the counsellor who ordered the test.

Four things families assume about the card
"My Ayushman card covers everything to do with cancer."
It covers the listed hospital packages at empanelled hospitals. Many outpatient tests, including inherited gene tests, sit outside those packages and are paid by the family.
"If the scheme will not pay for it, the test cannot be important."
The package list is about hospital care. It says nothing about how useful a test is. Your oncologist or counsellor decides whether a test is worth doing, not the scheme.
"An ABHA number is the same as an Ayushman card."
They share a name and nothing else. ABHA is a digital record ID that anyone can create. The card is hospital cover for eligible families.
"Paying for one test privately means we lose the scheme."
No. Paying for a test the card does not cover has no effect on your eligibility. Covered surgery, chemotherapy or radiation can still go through the scheme as usual.
Questions we are asked
Common questions about genetic testing and Ayushman Bharat
Can I use my Ayushman card for a BRCA test?
In most cases, no. A BRCA test is an inherited gene test done as an outpatient, and it is generally not a listed package. Ask the scheme desk at the hospital to confirm the current list, because lists do change, and ask your counsellor about any free programmes you might qualify for.
Will the scheme pay for treatment if a fault is found?
Treatment for cancer that falls under a listed package is covered at empanelled hospitals whatever the gene result says. A result can change which treatment is recommended. Whether that particular treatment is in a package is a question for the scheme desk before it starts.
Is Aarogyasri different from Ayushman Bharat?
Yes. Aarogyasri is the Telangana state scheme and PM-JAY is the national one, and in Telangana the two run alongside each other. Their package lists are similar in spirit. Neither generally pays for a stand-alone inherited gene test, but the desk can tell you which scheme applies to your family.
Does the card cover genetic counselling?
Counselling given during a covered admission may fall inside the package. A separate outpatient counselling appointment usually does not. Some laboratories include counselling in the test price, so ask whether it is included when you compare quotes.
My mother has cancer and a card. Is my test covered too?
The card covers your mother's treatment. A gene test for you, as a well relative, is almost always an outpatient test the family pays for. The good news is that once her fault is known, your test only looks for that one change and costs much less.
Can I ask for the test to be done while she is admitted?
You can ask, but being admitted does not bring the test into the package. The laboratory still bills for it separately. Arrange testing at the time your counsellor recommends, rather than trying to fit it around an admission.
Should I store my gene report in my ABHA account?
That is your choice. Linking records can help future doctors see your history, and you control who can view it. Think about who else can see it before you share, and talk it through with your counsellor if you are unsure.
Who can tell me for certain what my card will pay?
The scheme desk at the empanelled hospital treating you, working from the current package list. Take the test name and your doctor's note with you. If you are not sure where to start, call the CION helpline and someone will help you work it out.
