PALB2 testing cost in Hyderabad: what a family should budget | CION Cancer Clinics
PALB2 is almost always tested as part of a panel of breast and ovarian cancer genes, and that panel is the main cost for the first person tested. Once a fault is found, each relative is tested for that one change at a much lower price. The short answer
How much does a PALB2 test cost in Hyderabad?
The first person tested in a family usually has a multigene panel that checks PALB2 alongside BRCA1, BRCA2 and other breast cancer genes. That panel is the main cost. Once a PALB2 fault is known, each relative is tested for that single change, which costs far less.
Why PALB2 is tested in a panel
PALB2 works closely with BRCA2 inside the cell, and a family history that points to one gene can just as easily point to another. Testing PALB2 on its own would leave the others unchecked. A second test later nearly always costs more than a panel would have done at the start.
The result can bring a longer bill
For a woman who carries a PALB2 fault, the usual advice is breast screening every year, often including MRI, starting younger than routine screening. Over the years that repeat cost is often larger than the test itself. Families who plan for both at the start find the later conversations easier.

These are broad ranges seen across laboratories and hospitals, not quotes. Your own figure depends on the lab, the test and your cover.

What the price should cover
What should a fair PALB2 test price include?
- Counselling before the sample, with the family tree drawn on both sides
- A panel covering PALB2, BRCA1, BRCA2 and the other genes your history points to
- A check for large missing or extra pieces of each gene, not only spelling changes
- A written report that names the variant and how it was classified
- A results appointment in Telugu, Hindi or English, with time for questions
- A family letter to share with brothers, sisters and grown-up children

Who pays
Will insurance or a government scheme pay for it?
Sometimes, and rarely in full. Ask before the sample is taken, not after the bill arrives.
Private health insurance
Policies tend to pay for tests tied to a hospital stay. An outpatient genetic test is often excluded. If the result will change treatment for someone who already has breast cancer, a letter from the oncologist saying so can help the claim.
Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat
These schemes cover many cancer treatment packages but rarely the genetic test itself. Surgery and some scans linked to a cancer diagnosis may be covered, so ask the scheme desk what applies to you.
Staff and employer schemes
CGHS, ECHS and company schemes follow their own lists. Apply with the oncologist's written request before the sample is collected, because approval can take time and a named reason helps.
Paying yourself
Most families pay for the first test privately. Brothers and sisters often share the cost of testing the mother or aunt who had cancer, because the answer affects all of them. Ask for a written estimate that names the lab and the gene list.

What families assume about the cost, and what is true
"PALB2 is a minor gene, so the test is not worth the money."
A PALB2 fault clearly raises breast cancer risk, in some families close to the level seen with BRCA2. A result can change screening for sisters and daughters, which is where much of its value lies.
"Every relative needs the full panel."
Once the family's PALB2 change is known, relatives are usually tested for that change alone. That is the cheaper test in the cost section above.
"A positive result means expensive surgery straight away."
For most women with a PALB2 fault, the first plan is closer screening. Preventive surgery is one option discussed with the family history in view. It is never a requirement, and there is time to decide.
"Men in the family do not need testing."
A man can carry and pass on a PALB2 fault, and carries a raised risk of breast and pancreatic cancer himself. Testing a father or brother can answer the question for a whole branch of the family.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot give you a quote. Prices depend on the laboratory, the gene list and what your cover pays. A written estimate for your own situation is the only figure worth planning around.
It cannot tell you whether you need the test
That depends on who in the family had cancer, which cancer and at what age. A genetic counsellor or your oncologist will look at the family tree first. Often the right first step is to test the relative who already has cancer rather than you.
Who this does not apply to
Most people do not need a PALB2 test. One relative with breast cancer diagnosed at an older age, with no pattern of young or repeated cancers, rarely justifies it. A counsellor will tell you that as readily as they would recommend a test.
A tumour test is a different bill
If someone with cancer is being tested to choose a treatment, that tumour test answers a different question and carries a different price. It is covered under targeted therapy.

Common questions about PALB2 test costs
Can I ask for a PALB2-only test to save money?
You can ask, but it rarely saves money. A family history that points to PALB2 also points to BRCA1 and BRCA2. A panel checks them together, and testing one gene at a time usually costs more in the end.
Why does my brother's test cost so much less than mine?
Your test searched many genes for any change. His looks only for the single PALB2 change already found in you. The lab knows exactly where to look, so the work and the price are both smaller.
Does the price include counselling?
It should, but check before you pay. Some labs send only a report. Ask whether a counsellor will see you before the sample and again with the result, and whether either visit is charged separately.
Can the sample be collected in my district?
Often, yes. Many labs collect blood or saliva at a local centre and courier it to Hyderabad. Counselling can sometimes be done by video. Ask the helpline what is possible from your town before you travel.
Will Aarogyasri pay for the test?
Usually not for the genetic test itself. The scheme covers many cancer treatment packages, and some surgery or scans linked to cancer care may be covered. Ask the Aarogyasri desk before testing so the bill is not a surprise.
Does paying more get the result faster?
Some labs charge extra for a faster report. Speed usually matters only when the result will change surgery or treatment that is about to start. Otherwise the standard service is normally enough. Ask your oncologist whether time matters in your case.
Can I pay for the test in instalments?
No. CION does not offer EMI on genetic tests. If cost is a worry, say so early. The counsellor can help you decide who in the family should be tested first, so money goes where it changes the most decisions.
How do I get an estimate for my family?

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
