The short answer
How much does a RET gene test cost in Hyderabad?
It depends on who is being tested and how much of the gene is read. The first test in a family, usually for the person with medullary thyroid cancer, costs the most. Once a RET fault is found, relatives are tested for that one change only, which costs far less.
Two very different tests
The first test searches RET for a fault nobody has seen yet. Some labs read only the sections of the gene where most inherited RET faults sit, and some read the whole gene. The second kind of test knows exactly where to look. It checks one spelling change, which is quicker and cheaper.
Why the family pays once, not many times
If the relative with thyroid cancer is tested first and a fault is found, brothers, sisters and children only need the smaller test. With RET this matters more than usual, because children of a carrier are often tested young. Testing in the right order saves money for every branch of the family.
Why the test is often worth the cost
For a RET family, a clear result decides whether a child needs thyroid surgery and years of checks, or nothing at all. That is a rare case where a single test changes so much for so many people.

These are broad ranges seen across laboratories and hospitals in Hyderabad, not quotes. Your own figure depends on the lab, how much of the gene is read and your cover.

Why quotes differ
Why do two labs quote such different prices?
A higher price does not always mean a better test. These are the four things that move the figure.
How much of the gene is read
A test of the usual RET hot spots is the smallest. A whole-gene test costs more. A panel that adds other adrenal tumour genes costs more again, and is only needed when the family pattern is unclear.
Who gives the sample
The first person tested carries the full cost. Relatives tested for a fault already found pay far less. The order of testing matters more to the family budget than the choice of lab.
Whether counselling is included
Some packages include a session before the test and another to explain the report. Others sell the test alone. A cheaper test with no one to explain it is not a saving, least of all when a child's surgery depends on the answer.

How do you arrange RET testing without paying twice?
Start with the family tree
List who had thyroid cancer, an adrenal tumour or very high blood pressure at a young age, and roughly how old they were. Pathology reports are the most useful papers you can bring.
Test the person with thyroid cancer
Anyone with medullary thyroid cancer should be offered this test, even with no family history. A blood or saliva sample is enough.
Hear the result from a counsellor
You learn whether a fault was found, which risk level it belongs to, and who else in the family should now be offered a test.
Test relatives for the known fault
Parents, brothers, sisters and children each give a sample for the smaller test. Only carriers go on to checks and surgery, which is where most long-term cost sits.

It cannot quote your price. The figure depends on the test your counsellor recommends, the laboratory used and whether your cover pays for any part of it. The ranges above help you plan. They are not a bill.
It cannot read your report
A RET result can show a clearly harmful fault, no fault, or a change the lab cannot yet classify. Each leads somewhere different. What your specific variant means is a question for the counsellor who ordered the test.
Who this does not apply to
Most people with an ordinary thyroid nodule, or a relative with the common papillary type of thyroid cancer, do not need this test. RET testing of a tumour to choose a targeted medicine is a different test with a different price. That belongs under targeted therapy.

What do families get wrong about the cost?
"No one else in the family had it, so the test is a waste."
A real share of people with medullary thyroid cancer carry an inherited RET fault with no family history at all. The test is recommended for every one of them for that reason.
"To save money, test the youngest child first."
A negative result means little if nobody knows which fault to look for. Testing the relative with thyroid cancer first usually saves money across the whole family.
"Our health insurance will pay for the test."
Stand-alone genetic tests are often not covered. Check with your insurer in writing before testing. Thyroid surgery and the treatment that follows are more often covered.
"The test is the only cost."
For a carrier, the larger costs come later: thyroid surgery, thyroid tablets for life and yearly blood tests. Knowing this early helps a family plan.

Common questions about RET testing costs
Does Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover a RET test?
Stand-alone genetic tests are usually not included in these schemes. Thyroid surgery and cancer treatment may be covered. Scheme packages change, so ask the helpline or the scheme desk to check your own eligibility before you pay for anything yourself.
Why does my sister's test cost less than mine did?
Your test searched RET for an unknown fault. Hers only checks the one change already found in your result. That is much less work for the lab, so it costs far less. This is the main saving of testing in the right order.
How long does the result take?
A first RET test usually takes a few weeks. A test for a known family fault is often quicker. If a baby or young child is being tested and surgery timing depends on it, tell the counsellor so the sample goes to a lab that can report in time.
How much does testing a baby cost?
About the same as testing any relative for the known fault, because it is the same small test. A blood sample is taken in the usual way. The larger costs for a carrier child are the thyroid checks and surgery that follow.
Is genetic counselling charged separately?
It depends on the package. Some tests include a session before and after. Others do not. Always ask what happens if the result is positive or uncertain, and whether the follow-up conversation is part of the price you are paying.
What will a positive result cost us later?
Thyroid surgery, thyroid tablets for life, and yearly blood tests for calcitonin, adrenal hormones and calcium. These repeat costs usually add up to more than the test. Your team can help you plan them and check what your cover pays for.
We live in a district. Must we travel to Hyderabad?
The counselling conversation matters most, and it can sometimes be done by video. The sample is a simple blood or saliva collection. Ask the helpline how to combine visits so the family makes as few trips to the city as possible.
Is a cheaper online test just as good?
Some direct-to-consumer tests check only a few common changes and can miss a real RET fault. A clinical test ordered through a counsellor reads the right parts of the gene and names the codon. For a RET family, the cheaper test can give false reassurance.

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
