Kidney (renal cell) cancer starts in the lining of the kidney tubules. Many are now found early on scans done for other reasons. Surgery is the mainstay for localised disease, and targeted drugs or immunotherapy are used when the disease has spread.

How it’s diagnosed
CT or MRI of the abdomen characterises the mass; chest imaging completes staging. Biopsy is used selectively when results would change the plan.

Yes — for many small tumours, partial nephrectomy removes the tumour while preserving the rest of the kidney, protecting long-term kidney function.
2Is blood in urine always visible?
No. It can be microscopic and found only on urine testing. Visible, painless blood in urine should always be evaluated promptly.
3Does kidney cancer respond to chemotherapy?
Conventional chemotherapy works poorly for kidney cancer; targeted drugs and immunotherapy are the standard systemic options instead.
