About thyroid cancer
Thyroid cancer develops in the butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. Most thyroid cancers — particularly papillary type — grow slowly and respond very well to treatment, which centres on surgery, radioiodine therapy where indicated, and long-term thyroid hormone management.
Who is at higher risk
- Female sex
- Radiation exposure to the neck in childhood
- Family history of thyroid cancer
- Certain inherited syndromes (e.g., MEN2 for medullary type)
- Iodine imbalance
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
Neck ultrasound characterises the nodule, and FNAC (fine-needle aspiration) gives the diagnosis. Thyroid function tests and, for staging, additional imaging complete the work-up.

1Is every thyroid nodule cancer?
No — the large majority of thyroid nodules are benign. Ultrasound features and FNAC identify the small fraction that need surgery.
2Will my voice change after thyroid surgery?
The nerves to the voice box run beside the thyroid and are carefully identified and preserved during surgery. Temporary voice change can occur; permanent change is uncommon in experienced hands.
3What is radioiodine therapy?
Radioiodine is swallowed as a capsule and is taken up almost exclusively by thyroid tissue, destroying microscopic remnants after surgery in selected patients.
4Where is thyroid cancer treated near Hyderabad?
