About intestinal cancer
Small-intestine cancers are rare tumours of the bowel between the stomach and colon, including adenocarcinomas, neuroendocrine tumours, GIST, and lymphomas. Symptoms are non-specific, so diagnosis needs a focused work-up. Treatment is surgery-led with systemic therapy by subtype.
Signs to watch for
Crampy abdominal pain
Anaemia or bleeding (black stools)
Nausea, vomiting, or bloating after meals
Unexplained weight loss
Intermittent intestinal obstruction
A lump in the abdomen
Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.
Who is at higher risk
Crohn disease
Celiac disease
Inherited syndromes (Lynch, FAP, Peutz-Jeghers)
Diet high in red and processed meat
Smoking and alcohol
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
CT enterography, capsule endoscopy, or balloon-assisted enteroscopy with biopsy locate and confirm the tumour. PET-CT and specific markers help with subtype and staging.
Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team in Miryalaguda.
Treatment options
Your plan depends on the type and stage of the cancer and on your overall health. CION’s tumour board agrees on it with you.
1
Segmental resection of the involved bowel
Through CION’s network
2
Chemotherapy for adenocarcinoma by stage
In Miryalaguda
3
Targeted therapy for GIST
In Miryalaguda
4
Somatostatin-based and other therapy for neuroendocrine tumours
Standard scopes view the stomach and colon but not the long small bowel between them. Capsule endoscopy or CT enterography examines that segment.
2What is a GIST?
A gastrointestinal stromal tumour arises from the support cells of the bowel wall. Many respond well to targeted tablets in addition to surgery.
3Are neuroendocrine tumours cancer?
They are a spectrum — many grow slowly. Grading on biopsy and specialised scans guide how actively they need to be treated.
