Can Coconut Oil or Turmeric Ubtan — Replace Sunscreen?
Grandmothers have used coconut oil and turmeric ubtan for generations, but sun protection is measured differently from skin nourishment. Here's what SPF testing actually shows.
- No SPF value — coconut oil and turmeric are not rated for UV protection
- Skin care, not sun care — nourishing skin is different from blocking UV rays
- Use both together — sunscreen alongside tradition, not sunscreen instead of it
- Reapplication matters — sunscreen needs reapplying every few hours outdoors

Coconut oil and turmeric ubtan nourish and soften skin, but they do not protect against ultraviolet rays the way a tested sunscreen does. Neither has a measured SPF value. For actual sun protection, use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher alongside these traditional preparations, not instead of them.
Do coconut oil and turmeric ubtan really block the sun?
Coconut oil, turmeric ubtan and sandalwood paste have protected skin for generations, so they must block the sun.
These preparations moisturise and even out skin tone, but none have been tested to measure how much ultraviolet radiation they block, unlike sunscreen, which is rated by SPF.
If turmeric ubtan makes skin glow and feel less irritated in the sun, it is working as sun protection.
Feeling cooler or looking brighter comes from moisture and mild anti-inflammatory action, not from blocking the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn and skin damage.
Coconut oil left on the skin all day works like a layer of sunscreen.
Coconut oil's measured sun protection is very low and inconsistent, far short of what a tested sunscreen provides for daily outdoor use.
How do I explain this to my mother-in-law without dismissing her advice?
Tell her she's right that these preparations have real benefits — they moisturise, soothe irritation and are gentle for daily use. The difference is what sun protection actually measures: how much ultraviolet radiation reaches the skin, tested and rated as SPF.
Frame sunscreen as an addition, not a replacement. She can continue the turmeric ubtan or coconut oil routine for skin care, and you apply sunscreen underneath or after for sun protection specifically. This keeps the tradition while closing the actual gap.
Did you know?
Coconut oil's sun-blocking ability has actually been measured in lab tests, and it falls far short of the SPF 30 used for daily protection.

Does turmeric ubtan have any SPF value at all?
Turmeric ubtan has not been tested or rated for SPF, so it does not have a measured sun protection value. It contains curcumin, which has mild antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and this may help calm skin after sun exposure. But calming skin is different from blocking the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn and long-term skin damage. If you are stepping out in daylight, apply a tested sunscreen first, and use turmeric ubtan as a separate skin-care step, not as your sun protection.
Can I use coconut oil and sunscreen together, or will the oil block the sunscreen from working?
Yes, you can use both, but the order matters. Apply sunscreen first, on clean skin, and let it settle for a few minutes before adding coconut oil or any other moisturiser on top. If oil is applied first and sunscreen goes over it, the sunscreen may not spread evenly and its protection can be reduced. If you enjoy coconut oil for its moisturising feel, use it at night or after sun exposure instead of layering it under sunscreen during the day.
My grandmother used only sandalwood paste and never had skin cancer — doesn't that prove it works?
One person's experience does not measure how much ultraviolet protection a preparation gives, because skin damage from the sun builds up over decades and depends on many factors — time spent outdoors, skin type and genetics among them. Sandalwood paste is soothing and has been used safely for generations, but it has no tested SPF rating. It is safer to keep using it for its traditional skin benefits while adding a tested sunscreen for the sun protection specifically.
What SPF sunscreen should I actually use if I already follow a turmeric or coconut oil routine?
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with SPF 30 or higher for daily use, and reapply every few hours if you are outdoors. This works alongside your turmeric ubtan or coconut oil routine — you do not need to give up either. Apply sunscreen as the last step on exposed skin before stepping out, and continue your traditional skin-care steps at other times of day.
Is it disrespectful to tell an elder that their home remedy doesn't actually protect against the sun?
No — you can agree with what they're right about and add what's missing, rather than contradicting them. These preparations genuinely nourish skin, and that value doesn't need defending. The addition is simply that ultraviolet protection is tested and measured separately, as SPF, and traditional preparations were never tested for this. Framing sunscreen as one more helpful step, alongside what she already does, usually lands better than framing it as a correction.
