Cost & Reconstruction

What a Skin Graft or Flap Adds to — Your Skin Cancer Surgery Bill

If your surgeon has mentioned reconstruction, here is what it typically costs, why the number is confirmed only during the operation, and how insurance treats it.

  • Added cost — ₹15,000 to ₹1,50,000+ depending on the wound
  • Confirmed when — usually only after the tumour is removed
  • Insurance — may need separate pre-authorisation
  • Can't pay right away? — reconstruction can often be staged

A skin graft or flap adds to your surgery bill because closing the wound after skin cancer removal needs extra tissue, time, and sometimes a plastic surgeon. The exact cost is usually confirmed only after the tumour is out, once your surgeon sees how large the wound really is.

What does a skin graft or flap add to the surgery cost? (as of Sep 2026)

ItemIndicative cost
Local skin flap (tissue moved from nearby)₹15,000 – ₹40,000 added to the surgery cost
Skin graft (skin taken from another site, like the thigh)₹20,000 – ₹50,000 added, includes donor site care
Larger reconstructive flap (bigger or deeper wounds)₹50,000 – ₹1,50,000+, may need a plastic surgeon
Extra hospital day(s) for reconstruction₹5,000 – ₹15,000 per day, room-category dependent

Costs are indicative and vary by stage, centre and scheme eligibility. Confirm before treatment.

Skin graft or skin flap: what is the difference?

Skin graftSkin flap
A thin layer of skin only, with no blood supply of its ownSkin moved with its own blood vessels still attached
Used when nearby skin cannot stretch to cover the gapUsed when the wound is over a joint, bone, or needs padding
Leaves a second, separate wound at the donor siteDonor skin and the wound site are often close together
Usually adds less to the billCosts more, especially if a plastic surgeon is needed

Why did my surgeon say I need a graft, not just stitches?

Stitches only work when the skin on either side of the wound can be pulled together without strain. After a skin cancer removal, if the tumour was large, deep, or close to the eye, nose, or ear, the wound left behind may be too big or too tight to close that way.

Your surgeon usually confirms this only after the cancer is removed and the margin is checked. That is why reconstruction is often discussed as a possibility before surgery, but decided only during it.

Does insurance treat the graft or flap as a separate procedure?

  • Aarogyasri patientsReconstruction is usually billed under the same cancer surgery package, but confirm this with your counsellor before the operation.
  • Private insuranceSome insurers need a separate pre-authorisation for the graft or flap, which can delay a planned surgery date by a day or two.
  • CGHS and ESIAsk that your referral letter specifically mentions reconstruction, or the claim can be sent back for correction.
  • Get it in writingRequest written confirmation of what the surgery package covers before the operation, not after the bill arrives.

What if we cannot afford the reconstruction right away?

Tell your surgical team before the operation, not after. In many cases, the wound can be safely covered with dressings and managed for a few weeks while the reconstruction is planned and paid for as a second, staged surgery.

This is not the ideal timeline, and delay can affect healing in some locations, so discuss it openly rather than skipping the step. At CION, cost conversations happen before treatment decisions, so ask what a staged approach would cost and when it becomes urgent.

Did you know?

The exact cost of a skin graft or flap is usually confirmed only after the tumour is removed, once the surgeon can see and measure the actual wound.

Common questions

How Much Does Skin Graft or Flap Surgery Cost After Removal? — your questions answered

Why wasn't the graft or flap cost included in my original surgery quote?

Most initial quotes cover tumour removal only, because the exact wound size is not known until the cancer is cut out and checked for clear margins. If your surgeon expects a large or deep wound, they may mention reconstruction as a possibility beforehand, but the final decision and its cost are usually confirmed only during the operation. Ask for a range at your pre-surgery consultation so you are not caught unprepared, even though the exact figure comes later.

How is the final cost decided if it's confirmed only during surgery?

The surgeon measures the wound after removing the tumour and decides whether nearby skin can close it, or if a graft or flap is needed. The size, depth, and location of the wound decide which option and its cost. Hospitals like CION give you an estimated range before surgery and confirm the actual bill afterward, with transparent, itemised costs rather than a single hidden add-on.

Does a skin graft hurt more than the main cancer surgery site?

Many patients say the donor site, where skin is taken from, feels sorer than the area where the cancer was removed. This is normal and usually settles within one to two weeks with regular dressing changes and pain medicine. Tell your care team if pain increases instead of easing, or if you notice fever, spreading redness, or fluid soaking through the dressing, since these need same-day attention.

How long does the donor site take to heal?

A thin skin graft donor site, often taken from the thigh, usually heals in two to three weeks with regular dressing care. A local flap, where skin is moved from right beside the wound, tends to heal faster since there is no separate donor wound. Healing time can be longer for older patients, diabetics, or larger donor areas, so ask your surgeon for a timeline specific to you.

Can the reconstruction be done as a separate surgery later?

Yes, this is called staged reconstruction. The wound is dressed and monitored while healing begins, and the graft or flap surgery is scheduled once it is medically and financially ready. It is not the fastest path, and your surgeon will explain if the location makes delay risky, such as wounds near the eye. Discuss staging openly with your surgical team rather than skipping the step altogether.

Does Aarogyasri cover treatment for the donor site as well?

Where reconstruction is approved under the same surgical package, donor site dressing and follow-up visits are usually included, since it is part of the same procedure. Coverage details vary by package code and hospital, so confirm this in writing with your Aarogyasri counsellor before the surgery date. If the graft is billed separately, ask specifically whether donor site care is included in that approval.
