What does robotic surgery cost in Hyderabad?
In 2026, robotic cancer surgery in Hyderabad costs noticeably more than the same operation done by keyhole, and the gap is usually quoted in lakhs rather than thousands. The extra comes from the single-use robotic instruments, a charge for the machine itself, and longer theatre time. The operation underneath, the surgeon, the stay and the tissue report cost roughly what they would have cost anyway.
Why this page does not give you one figure
The robotic add-on differs between hospitals, between operations and between room categories. A prostate removal, a kidney operation and a rectal cancer operation each use a different number of instruments and a different amount of console time. A figure on a web page would be wrong for most readers. What you need is the itemised add-on for your operation, from the centre that would do it.
What "robotic" actually means
The surgeon operates from a console, controlling instruments that pass through small cuts, the same size as keyhole ports. The machine does nothing on its own. It is a way of holding and moving keyhole instruments with more range of movement and a magnified 3D view. The cuts, the anaesthetic and the recovery are close to keyhole surgery.

Ask for each of these as a separate line on the estimate. A quote that lumps them into "robotic charges" cannot be compared with anything.
Robotic instruments
Each robotic instrument has a fixed number of uses set by the maker, after which it stops working and is replaced. The share of each instrument used on your operation is billed to you. This is usually the largest part of the add-on.
The machine charge
Hospitals recover the cost of buying and maintaining the system through a per-case fee, sometimes shown as "robotic system" or "console" charge. It is fixed per operation and does not fall if the operation is quick.
Drapes and disposables
The robotic arms are covered with sterile single-use drapes, and the ports, staplers and energy devices are specific to the system. These are billed like any other consumables, as opened.
Theatre time and the team
Setting up the machine and docking it to the patient takes time, and the theatre is charged by the hour. A team trained on the system may also carry a higher surgeon or assistant fee.

Four things families believe about robotic surgery, and what is true
"The robot does the operation, so it is safer."
The surgeon does the operation. The machine moves only where the surgeon's hands move it. The result depends on the surgeon's experience with that operation far more than on the instrument. Ask how many the surgeon has done, by any method.
"Robotic is always better, so paying more is worth it."
For some operations in tight spaces, such as deep in the pelvis, the extra reach and view help the surgeon. For many others, studies so far show similar results to keyhole surgery. Ask what the robot adds for your operation, and what the keyhole alternative would be.
"If the hospital has a robot, we should use it."
A hospital that has invested in a machine has a reason to use it. That is not the same as a reason for you to have it. A second opinion from a surgeon at a centre without one is a fair way to test the recommendation.
"Insurance will cover the robotic charge like any surgery."
Many policies pay the operation but cap the robotic add-on, and some list robotic surgery under "modern treatments" with its own limit. Aarogyasri pays the listed procedure at its package rate, whatever method is used. Ask the insurance desk before you decide.
Getting a real figure
How to get a quote you can actually compare
Ask why robotic, for you
Ask the surgeon what the machine adds for your operation, and what the keyhole or open alternative would be. Write the answer down. If the answer is about the hospital rather than about you, ask again.
Ask for the add-on as its own line
Ask the billing desk for the estimate with the ordinary operation and the robotic add-on shown separately, with instruments, machine charge, disposables and theatre time itemised inside the add-on.
Check your cover in writing
Give the estimate to your insurer or scheme desk and ask what they will pay for the operation and what for the add-on. The patient's share is the number that matters, and it can be surprisingly different from the headline.
Compare like with like
If you take a second quote, ask for the same split. Two hospitals quoting one bundled figure cannot be compared, and a lower bundle may simply have left more out.

- Console time
- The minutes the surgeon spends operating from the control console. Some hospitals bill the machine by the hour rather than per case.
- Docking
- Attaching the robotic arms to the ports in the patient. It adds time in theatre before the operation proper begins.
- Instrument usage charge
- Your share of instruments that have a fixed number of uses. The main reason robotic surgery costs more than keyhole.
- Modern treatment limit
- A clause in many Indian health policies that caps what the insurer pays for robotic surgery and a few other newer methods.
- Conversion
- Switching to open surgery during the operation if the robotic approach cannot be completed safely. The robotic charges usually still apply.
Being straight with you
Who robotic surgery does not suit, and what this page cannot tell you
Robotic surgery is not offered for every cancer or every patient. Very large tumours, disease that has spread widely inside the abdomen, heavy scarring from earlier operations, and some heart and lung conditions that make a long anaesthetic in a tilted position risky all push the team towards keyhole or open surgery instead. In those cases paying more buys nothing.
Where schemes and insurance fit
Aarogyasri pays the listed operation at its package rate regardless of method, so the robotic add-on usually falls to the family. CGHS, ECHS and EHS pay at their approved rates, which may not include a robotic charge. Cashless insurers vary widely and many apply a modern treatment limit. Ask each desk for the patient's share in writing. There is no EMI scheme at CION.

Why is robotic surgery so much more expensive than keyhole?
Mainly the instruments. Each robotic instrument works for a fixed number of uses and then must be replaced, and your share of that is billed per case. Add a machine charge, single-use drapes and longer theatre time, and the add-on reaches lakhs. The rest of the bill is close to keyhole surgery.
Does robotic surgery mean a shorter hospital stay?
Usually about the same as keyhole surgery for the same operation, because both use small cuts. Compared with open surgery, both tend to mean a shorter stay and less pain. The saving on stay applies to keyhole as much as to robotic, and rarely offsets the add-on.
Will my insurance pay for robotic surgery?
It depends on the policy. Many pay the operation itself but cap the robotic add-on under a modern treatment clause, and older policies may exclude it. Send the itemised estimate to your insurer before you decide and ask for the approved amount and your share in writing.
Is robotic surgery covered under Aarogyasri?
The scheme pays for the listed operation at its package rate, whichever method is used. The robotic add-on is not a separate scheme item, so at most centres it falls to the family. Ask the Aarogyasri desk at the hospital to confirm before admission.
Is the result better if we pay for the robot?
Not automatically. For some operations in confined spaces the surgeon may find it easier, and for many others the results so far are similar to keyhole surgery. The surgeon's experience with your operation matters more than the instrument. Ask what the machine adds for your case.

What if the surgeon has to convert to open surgery?
Sometimes the operation cannot be completed safely through small cuts and the surgeon opens. The robotic charges already incurred usually stay on the bill, and the open operation is charged as well. Ask the billing desk how conversion is handled before you sign.
Can we get a cheaper quote by going to a different hospital?
Possibly, but only compare quotes that show the same split: operation, robotic add-on, stay and exclusions. A lower bundled figure may leave more out. And a cheaper quote is only useful if the surgeon there has real experience of your operation.
