A stoma nurse is the person who helps you live with a urostomy: they mark the site before surgery, teach you and your family to change the bag, and sort out leaks and sore skin afterwards. In Hyderabad the first place to find one is the centre that did your operation. The short answer
Who helps you with a urostomy after you leave hospital?
A stoma nurse does. A stoma nurse is a nurse trained to care for stomas (the opening on the abdomen where urine now leaves the body), to teach you and your family to change the bag, and to sort out leaks and skin problems. In Hyderabad the first place to find one is the centre that did your operation.
What a stoma nurse actually does
Before surgery, they mark the spot on your abdomen where the stoma will sit, so that it lands where a bag fits well under your clothes. On the ward, they teach you to empty and change the bag until you can do it alone. After discharge, they are the person you call when the bag leaks, the skin around the stoma is red, the stoma looks different, or you simply cannot get the fit right. They also know which products exist and where to buy them in the city.
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you which centres in Hyderabad have a stoma nurse today, or which products your own skin will tolerate. Both change. What it can do is tell you what to ask for, and where to start looking.

What kinds of stoma support exist in Hyderabad?
Not every centre offers all of these. Ask which ones your centre has before the operation, not after.
The stoma nurse at your operating centre
Your first and most important contact. Ask for their name and number before discharge, and ask how to reach them on a weekend. If the centre has no dedicated stoma nurse, ask which ward nurse has been trained and who covers when they are off.
The stoma clinic
Some larger cancer centres in the city run a clinic where you can be seen for a fit check, a skin problem or a product change without a full surgical appointment. Ask whether yours does, and whether you can attend without a referral.
Product suppliers and company representatives
The companies that make urostomy bags have representatives in Hyderabad who can show you the range and sometimes give samples to try. Useful for finding a product that fits, but they sell what they make, so take the stoma nurse's advice on which to use.
Patient groups and ostomy associations
Patient-run ostomy associations in India hold meetings and phone support, and some have members in Hyderabad. Talking to a person who has lived with a urostomy for years is worth more than any leaflet. Ask your stoma nurse how to reach one.
Home nursing and tele-support
Home nursing agencies in the city can send a nurse for the first bag changes at home, though not all have stoma training, so ask. Many stoma nurses will look at a photo on WhatsApp and tell you whether you need to come in.

How do you get stoma help if you live in a district?
Learn everything before discharge
If home is three hours away, the ward is where the learning must happen. Ask for extra teaching sessions, have two family members learn, and film the nurse doing a change on your phone.
Leave with supplies and a written list
Take enough bags and skin products for the first weeks, plus the exact product names and codes written down, so that a local chemist or an online order gets the right item.
Set up a phone line to the stoma nurse
Before you leave, agree how you will send photos and questions. Most problems in the first month can be sorted by phone if the nurse can see the stoma and the skin.
Plan the return visits
Fit the stoma check into the surgical follow-up trip so that one journey serves both. Ask whether a nearer CION centre or a local nurse can do the check in between.

Before the operation
What should you ask your centre about stoma support?
Ask before the date is fixed, because the answers tell you how the months after surgery will go. A centre that does this operation regularly will have ready answers.
The questions that matter
Who will mark the stoma site before surgery, and will I be sitting and standing when they do it? Who teaches me and my family on the ward, and how many sessions? What is the name and number of the person I call after discharge, and what happens at night or on a Sunday? Which products will I go home with, and where in Hyderabad do I buy more? Is there a clinic I can attend for a fit check, and does it cost anything?
If the answers are vague
That is useful information too. Support after a urostomy is a large part of how well you live with it. If a centre cannot say who will look after the stoma, ask again. You are entitled to know before you agree to the operation.

Three things families tell us, and what is actually true
"Leaking and sore skin are just part of having a bag."
They are signs that the fit or the product is wrong, and both can usually be corrected in a single visit. A well-fitted urostomy bag stays on for days and the skin under it looks like the skin next to it. Do not put up with it; call the stoma nurse.
"We should not trouble the nurse with small questions."
Small questions are the job. A stoma nurse would far rather see a photo of mild redness today than a raw, infected patch next month. The early weeks are exactly when you are expected to call, and nobody keeps count.
"Any nurse can look after a stoma."
Any nurse can empty a bag. Fitting one to a particular stoma, choosing between products and treating the skin underneath is a specific skill. If a home nurse or a local clinic is helping, ask whether they have stoma training, and keep the stoma nurse's number as well.

Common questions about stoma support
Does CION have a stoma nurse?
Call the helpline and ask about the centre nearest you. We would rather tell you exactly what is available at that branch than make a general promise. If a dedicated stoma nurse is not on site, we will tell you who does the teaching, who you call afterwards, and how photos and questions are handled.
Is there a charge for seeing the stoma nurse?
It differs between centres. Teaching on the ward is normally part of the admission. A later clinic visit for a fit check may be charged as a nursing visit or included in the surgical follow-up. Ask at discharge.
Can the stoma nurse come to our home?
Some centres arrange it for the first change at home, and some home nursing agencies in Hyderabad have nurses with stoma training. Ask your centre first. If a home nurse is arranged privately, ask whether they have looked after urostomies before.
Where do we buy urostomy bags in Hyderabad?
Surgical supply shops near the large hospitals, some chemists, the manufacturers' own representatives and online pharmacies. Take the exact product name and code with you, because a different bag that looks similar may not fit your stoma. Your stoma nurse will know which shops keep stock.
My mother's skin is red and raw. Should we go to emergency?
Usually not. Sore skin around a stoma is almost always a fit or product problem and is a stoma nurse's job. Send a photo with the bag off, in good light, and follow their advice. Go the same day only if there is fever, spreading redness, or the stoma itself has changed colour.
We live far from Hyderabad. Can we manage without a nurse nearby?
Many families do. The keys are thorough teaching before discharge, two trained family members, enough supplies to travel home with, and a phone or WhatsApp line to the stoma nurse for photos. Fit the stoma check into your surgical follow-up trips so that one journey covers both.
Is there a patient group in Hyderabad for people with a urostomy?
Patient-run ostomy associations in India have members across the country and can put you in touch with someone in or near the city. Ask your stoma nurse, or call the helpline and we will point you to what we know of.
Who do we call at night if the bag will not stay on?
Agree this before discharge. Usually it is the ward or the on-call number of your operating centre, since a stoma nurse is rarely on duty overnight. Keep a spare bag, skin barrier and towel by the bed, so that a night leak is a nuisance rather than an emergency.
