The short answer
What do urostomy supplies cost, and where do you buy them?
A urostomy needs a steady monthly supply of bags, and in 2026 that supply usually runs to a few thousand rupees a month, more with a two-piece system and accessories. You buy them from surgical supply shops near the big hospitals, from the makers' own distributors, or online. The hospital pharmacy usually stocks only one or two kinds.
What drives the monthly figure
Three things. Which system you use, because a two-piece base plate plus bags costs more than a one-piece bag. How often you change, because sore skin or a poor fit means more changes. And what extras you need, because barrier films, adhesive remover, powder and belts are each priced separately and add up.
What most schemes do and do not pay for
Supplies used in hospital are inside the surgery package. Once you are home, most families pay for bags themselves. Some government schemes reimburse ostomy appliances for their members, and some cashless policies have a consumables limit, so it is worth asking in writing before you buy in bulk.

What a urostomy actually uses each month
Bags, or bags plus base plates
The main cost. A one-piece bag is a single item changed every few days. A two-piece system is a base plate that stays on for days plus bags that clip on. Both need a drainable tap at the bottom for urine; a bowel-stoma bag will not do.
Night drainage bag
A large bag connected at bedtime so you sleep through. It is rinsed and reused for a couple of weeks, then replaced. A stand or a hook to keep it below the mattress is a one-off purchase.
Skin protection
Barrier film or wipes that dry clear and shield the skin from urine, stoma powder for skin that is already sore, and adhesive remover for gentle peeling. Not everyone needs all three.

Measuring guide, scissors and belt
A stoma measuring card comes in the box. Curved scissors make cutting the opening easier. A belt supports a convex base or gives confidence for physical work. All are bought once and last.

How the cost changes over the first year

In hospital
Supplies are part of the admission. Ask the stoma nurse to write down the make, the system and the size you are going home with, so you can buy the same thing.

The first month at home
The most expensive month. The stoma is still shrinking, so cut-to-fit bags are used, the fit is being learned, and leaks mean extra changes. Buy a small quantity at first, not a carton.

Months two to six
The stoma settles to its final size and changes become predictable. Many people switch to pre-cut bags and settle on one make. This is when buying in bulk starts to save money.

After the first year
A steady monthly cost that only rises if the skin becomes sore or the body shape changes. Re-measure the stoma if weight goes up or down, because a wrong-sized opening wastes bags.

On the box
Words on the packaging, in plain language
- Urostomy pouch, drainable
- A bag with a tap at the bottom for urine. Bowel-stoma bags are different and will not work.
- Cut-to-fit
- You cut the opening yourself to match your stoma. Used in the first months while the stoma is still shrinking.
- Pre-cut
- The opening is already cut to a stated size in millimetres. Buy the size your stoma nurse measured, not a guess.
- Flange or base plate
- The adhesive part that sticks to the skin. In a two-piece system it is sold separately from the bags, with a matching size code.
- Convex
- A base that curves inward to press the skin down around a flat or sunken stoma. Only for people whose nurse has fitted one.

Four things families say about the cost of supplies, and what is true
"The hospital gave him a bag, so we should buy that brand for life."
The ward stocks what its supplier provides, not necessarily what suits your skin or your budget. Most makers will send samples. Trying two or three kinds in the first months, with your stoma nurse's help, often finds one that leaks less and costs less.
"Cheaper bags mean more leaks."
Price and fit are different things. A costly bag cut to the wrong size leaks; a plain one cut correctly on dry skin holds. The single biggest saving is a good fit, because leaks waste bags and cause sore skin that needs more products.
"Insurance will cover everything after the operation."
Most policies and schemes cover supplies used during the admission. Ongoing home supplies are usually paid by the family, with some exceptions for government scheme members. Ask your insurer in writing rather than assuming, and keep every bill.
"Buying a whole carton at discharge will save money."
The stoma shrinks over the first months, and the size, and sometimes the system, you leave hospital with may not be what you use later. Buy a few weeks' worth first. Bulk buying pays once the size has settled.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what your own monthly bill will be, because that depends on the system your nurse fits, how often you change, the shop you use and whether any scheme reimburses you. It also cannot name a brand for you. Which make holds on your skin in Hyderabad heat is found by trying, not by reading.
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS and cashless insurance
The operation itself, and the supplies used during the stay, sit inside the package under Aarogyasri and most cashless policies. Home supplies afterwards are treated differently by each scheme. CGHS and ECHS members should ask their dispensary about ostomy appliance reimbursement. Cashless policy holders should ask whether a consumables allowance exists. Keep every bill and prescription either way.
If the cost is becoming a reason to change less often
Tell your stoma nurse. There are plain, lower-cost makes, and the makers' helplines and some patient groups run assistance schemes for people who cannot afford supplies. Stretching a bag past its life costs more in the end, in leaks, sore skin and lost sleep.

Common questions about urostomy supplies
How many bags does a person use in a month?
It depends on the system and how long each base stays on. Someone changing a one-piece bag every few days uses roughly eight to twelve a month once settled. A two-piece system uses fewer base plates but more bags. Leaks, heat and sore skin all push the number up.
Which brands are sold in India?
The main international makers all sell urostomy pouches in India through distributors and online, and there are Indian-made options too. This page does not recommend one over another. Ask your stoma nurse which they see holding well in local heat, and try samples before you commit.
Do I need a prescription to buy them?
No. Ostomy bags are sold over the counter. A written note from your nurse with the make, system and size code is far more useful than a prescription, because it stops the shop selling you the wrong product. Keep a photo of it on your phone.
Can I get supplies in my district, or only in Hyderabad?
Larger district towns have surgical supply shops that can order for you, and online delivery reaches most pincodes. The safe approach is to keep a month in hand and reorder early. The maker's India helpline can name the nearest stockist.
Is there anything free or subsidised?
Sometimes. Some government scheme members can claim ostomy appliances, some makers run patient assistance programmes, and a few ostomy associations help members who cannot afford supplies. None of this is automatic. A stoma nurse or the CION helpline can point you to what applies to you.
Why is the night bag sold separately?
Because it is a different product, larger and reusable, that connects to the day bag's tap. It is rinsed daily and replaced every couple of weeks. Some shops do not stock it, so ask for a urostomy night drainage bag by name, with the connector that fits your make.
Are the accessories really necessary?
Not all of them, and not for everyone. Barrier film and adhesive remover help many people; powder is for skin that is already sore; belts and convex bases are fitted by a nurse. Buy what your nurse advises after seeing your skin, not the whole shelf the shop suggests.
Will the cost ever go down?
Usually, yes. The first month is the dearest. Once the stoma has settled and the fit is right, changes become predictable and bulk buying brings the price per bag down. The cost goes up again only if the skin becomes sore or the body shape changes and the fit has to be redone.

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
