A simple plug of impacted earwax is one of the most frequent causes of sudden muffled hearing in one ear. It can also cause ringing and a feeling of fullness. Once the wax is gently removed, hearing usually returns straight away.
Infections (otitis media) and fluid build-up behind the eardrum reduce hearing in the affected ear, often with pain or pressure. Common after a cold. Most settle with treatment, though persistent fluid may need review.

No. An acoustic neuroma — properly called a vestibular schwannoma — is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour. It grows from the Schwann cells that wrap the vestibular (balance) nerve next to the hearing nerve. It does not spread to other parts of the body. The concern is purely local: as it grows it can press on the hearing nerve, the balance nerve, and occasionally the facial nerve or brainstem. Because it is benign and often slow-growing, many small tumours are simply monitored. When treatment is needed, the goal is to control growth and protect nerve function — not to fight a cancer.
