What Does Brain Tumour Treatment Cost in Hyderabad?

If you have just been told you or a loved one has a brain tumour, "how much will treatment cost?" is one of the first practical questions — and you deserve an honest answer. The honest answer is that there is no single price. A small benign meningioma simply watched on yearly MRI scans costs very little. A Grade 4 glioblastoma needing surgery, six weeks of radiation, and months of chemotherapy can run into several lakhs. The cost follows the diagnosis, not the other way round.

This page gives you realistic, itemised price ranges for each part of brain tumour care in Hyderabad, explains what makes one patient's bill different from another's, and shows how CION's brain tumour treatment programme uses EMI and insurance support to make care affordable. We walk this journey with you — including the money part.

Did you know?

Brain tumours are graded WHO Grade 1 to Grade 4 rather than "staged" like most cancers — because they almost never spread outside the brain. According to the WHO 2021 classification and EANO guidelines, this grade (together with molecular markers such as IDH and MGMT) decides which treatments you need — and therefore is the single biggest factor in your total cost.

What Decides Your Brain Tumour Cost?

Two patients with the same diagnosis can have very different bills. These are the factors that move the number up or down — and why a written, individual estimate matters.

Tumour type & grade

The biggest driver. A benign Grade 1 may need only surgery or even just monitoring. A Grade 4 glioblastoma needs surgery plus chemoradiation plus months of chemotherapy — far more cost. Read more on the brain cancer & tumour hub.

Surgery vs no surgery

Open brain tumour surgery with an ICU stay is usually the single largest item. Some tumours are treated with stereotactic radiosurgery alone, with no incision and no admission.

Radiation plan

The number of radiation sessions and whether you have standard IMRT or focused SRS changes the radiation bill significantly. Brain metastases are often treated in just 1–5 SRS sessions.

Hospital & ICU stay

Longer ICU and ward stays after complex surgery add daily charges. A straightforward case discharges faster and costs less than one needing extended monitoring.

Diagnostics & molecular tests

MRI, biopsy, and molecular tests (IDH, MGMT) are essential for malignant gliomas and add to the up-front cost — but they prevent spending on the wrong treatment.

Supportive care

Steroids for brain swelling, anti-seizure medicines, and rehabilitation (speech, physio) are part of good care and form part of the overall plan and cost.

How Cost Differs by Brain Tumour Type

Because the treatment follows the diagnosis, the easiest way to understand cost is by tumour type. Here is a realistic picture for the most common situations we see in Hyderabad.

Benign tumours (most meningiomas, small pituitary tumours)

Many benign brain tumours are small and slow-growing. Some are simply monitored with regular MRI scans — so the cost is just the scan and consultation. When treatment is needed, it is often a single surgery (coordinated with our neurosurgical partners) or a short course of stereotactic radiosurgery, which is generally less than the full pathway for a malignant tumour.

Lower-grade gliomas (Grade 2–3)

These usually need surgery followed by radiation, and sometimes chemotherapy. Molecular testing (IDH status) is important and adds to early costs but guides whether intensive treatment is needed now or watchful monitoring is safe. Total cost sits between a benign tumour and a glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma (Grade 4 GBM) — the most involved pathway

GBM needs the full sequence: surgery, then six weeks of concurrent chemoradiation (alkylating chemotherapy with radiation), then several months of adjuvant chemotherapy. This is why the full GBM pathway is the most expensive — typically ₹4,50,000 to ₹15,00,000+ depending on ICU stay and chemotherapy duration. The brain tumour treatment in Hyderabad page explains this pathway step by step.

Brain metastases (secondary tumours)

When cancer spreads to the brain from elsewhere — most often lung, breast, kidney or melanoma — there is often no open surgery. Treatment is usually focused SRS to each lesion (1–5 outpatient sessions) alongside systemic therapy for the primary cancer, so the brain-directed cost is mainly the radiation sessions.

Did you know?

For glioblastoma, an inexpensive lab test on the biopsy — MGMT methylation — predicts how well alkylating chemotherapy will work. NCCN and EANO guidelines recommend it as part of the standard workup. Spending a little on the right molecular test up front can prevent spending far more on treatment that is unlikely to help.

FAQs

Brain Tumour Treatment Cost in Hyderabad — Your Questions Answered

What is the cost of brain tumour treatment in Hyderabad?

There is no single price — the cost depends on the tumour type and the treatment you actually need. As a guide: a craniotomy (surgery, coordinated with our neurosurgical partners) is roughly ₹2,80,000 – ₹4,50,000; stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is around ₹1,20,000 – ₹2,50,000 per session; and a full glioblastoma (GBM) pathway — surgery, then 6 weeks of concurrent chemoradiation, then adjuvant chemotherapy — can range from ₹4,50,000 to ₹15,00,000+. A benign meningioma watched on MRI may cost only the scan and consultation. At CION you get a written, itemised estimate after your free consultation — no surprise bills.

Why does brain tumour treatment cost vary so much?

Because no two brain tumours are the same. The biggest cost drivers are: the type and grade of the tumour (a benign Grade 1 may need only surgery; a Grade 4 GBM needs surgery plus chemoradiation plus chemotherapy); whether surgery is open or needle-biopsy only; length of ICU and hospital stay; how many radiation sessions are planned; and which molecular tests (IDH, MGMT) are run on the biopsy. Two patients with the same diagnosis can have very different bills depending on these factors. That is why CION prices each plan individually after reviewing your MRI and reports.

Is brain tumour surgery the most expensive part of treatment?

Often, but not always. Surgery (craniotomy, coordinated with our accredited neurosurgical partners) and the ICU stay that follows are usually the single largest line item. But for a glioblastoma, the six weeks of concurrent chemoradiation plus six months of adjuvant chemotherapy can together add up to as much as the surgery — or more. For brain metastases treated with stereotactic radiosurgery, there may be no surgery at all, so the radiation sessions become the main cost. See our dedicated brain tumour surgery cost in Hyderabad page for a surgery-only breakdown.

Does CION offer EMI or instalment payments for brain tumour treatment?

Yes. CION offers an EMI facility so the cost of treatment can be spread over manageable monthly instalments rather than paid as one lump sum. We also work with all major TPAs (third-party administrators) for cashless hospitalisation under most private health-insurance policies. During your consultation, our team will help you understand what your policy covers, what the likely out-of-pocket amount is, and how an EMI plan could work for your situation. Our promise is simple: decisions for healing, not billing.

Is brain tumour treatment covered by health insurance?

Most private health-insurance and corporate mediclaim policies cover hospitalisation for brain tumour surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, subject to your sum insured, waiting periods and policy terms. CION coordinates cashless treatment with major TPAs where your policy allows it, and our billing team helps prepare the pre-authorisation paperwork. Day-care procedures such as outpatient stereotactic radiosurgery may have different coverage rules. Bring your policy document to your consultation and we will tell you, in plain language, what is likely to be covered and what is not before you commit.

How much does a brain MRI and biopsy cost before treatment starts?

Diagnosis comes before any treatment decision. An MRI brain with contrast — the gold-standard scan — typically costs a few thousand rupees, and a stereotactic needle biopsy (when tissue confirmation is needed without open surgery) is roughly ₹1,00,000 – ₹2,00,000. Molecular tests (IDH, MGMT) on the biopsy sample add to this but are essential for planning a malignant glioma. CION includes a free written second opinion with your consultation, so you can confirm the diagnosis and the proposed plan before spending on treatment.

Will CION give me the cost in writing before treatment?

Yes. After your free 45-minute consultation and a review of your MRI and reports, CION provides a written, itemised cost estimate covering the proposed surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and supportive care for your specific tumour. You will see the components clearly — not a single vague figure — so you can plan, check your insurance, and ask questions before deciding. We believe transparent costs are part of good care. Request your free cost estimate to get started.
