What "breast cancer medicine" actually means — and why there is no single answer
When patients search for "breast cancer medicine" or a "breast cancer medicine name," they are usually asking: what will I be given, and will it work? The honest answer is that there is no single breast cancer medicine. Treatment is a combination of categories, chosen according to your tumour's biology.
Breast cancer cells are tested for three key markers after biopsy: oestrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2 protein. The result of those tests determines which category — or combination of categories — your oncologist recommends. A tumour that is ER-positive responds to hormone-blocking medicine. One that is HER2-positive responds to targeted therapy. A triple-negative tumour (ER-, PR-, HER2-) needs chemotherapy, and often immunotherapy. Two patients with "breast cancer" may be on completely different treatment plans.
At CION, no treatment plan is decided by a single doctor. Our tumor board — which includes medical, surgical and radiation oncologists — reviews every new patient's biopsy, imaging, and staging report together before recommending any course of breast cancer treatment. You deserve a plan built around your cancer, not a standard protocol.
The four main categories of breast cancer medicine — and which patients need each
Your oncologist will use your receptor test results to decide which of these categories — or which combination — fits your cancer. None of these are prescribed without first confirming your tumour's profile.
Hormone-blocking therapy
For tumours that are oestrogen or progesterone receptor positive, hormone-blocking therapy removes the fuel the cancer needs. It is usually given as a daily tablet for breast cancer treatment, taken for five to ten years. It works quietly in the background — many patients feel well on it. It is the most commonly prescribed systemic breast cancer medicine in India.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy targets fast-dividing cells throughout the body. It may be recommended before surgery (to shrink the tumour), after surgery (to reduce recurrence risk), or in metastatic disease. It can be given as an infusion in a day-care setting or, in some cases, as an oral tablet. Side effects are real — and our allied care team actively supports you through them.
Targeted therapy
HER2-positive breast cancers overexpress a protein that drives rapid cell growth. Targeted therapy blocks this protein, slowing or stopping cancer cell division. It is given alongside chemotherapy in most cases and may continue for about a year. Targeted therapy has significantly improved outcomes for HER2-positive patients over the past decade.
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy helps your own immune system recognise and destroy cancer cells. It is most commonly used in triple-negative breast cancer (where hormone and targeted therapies do not apply), often in combination with chemotherapy. Not every patient is a candidate — eligibility is confirmed by specific biomarker tests on your tumour tissue.
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy uses precisely targeted beams to destroy any cancer cells remaining in the breast or surrounding lymph nodes after surgery. It is not a "medicine" in the tablet or infusion sense, but it is a core part of the breast cancer treatment plan for most patients who have had breast-conserving surgery. CION radiation oncologists use image-guided techniques to protect the heart and lungs.
Bone-protecting treatments
Long-term hormone-blocking therapy can reduce bone density. Bone-protecting treatments — given as periodic infusions — strengthen bones and also carry an additional anti-cancer benefit in early-stage disease. They are not always needed, but your oncologist will assess your bone health at the start of treatment and at regular intervals throughout.

How CION decides which breast cancer medicine is right for you — step by step
From your first appointment to the start of treatment, here is exactly what happens — no surprises, no gaps, no single-doctor opinions.
Free 45-minute consultation
A senior oncologist listens to your full history, reviews any existing reports, and explains what further tests are needed. You are never rushed. You are never pressured. This visit is completely free for all cancer patients.
Receptor and staging tests confirmed
If you do not yet have a biopsy with full IHC (ER, PR, HER2), Ki-67, and grade, we arrange this. If you already have one, our pathologist re-reads it. Getting the receptor profile right is not optional — it decides everything about which breast cancer medicine you will receive.
Tumor board review
Your case goes to the CION tumor board — a structured meeting where medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists review your pathology, imaging, and staging together. No single doctor makes the call. The board reaches a consensus, evidence-based recommendation.
Treatment plan explained to you in plain language
A senior oncologist sits with you and your family to explain the recommended breast cancer treatment plan — which category of medicine, why it was chosen, how long it will run, what side effects to expect, and what to watch for. You ask every question. You decide when you are ready.
Cost estimate, insurance check, and care coordination
Before treatment begins, our patient-support team provides a written cost estimate (indicative range). We check your Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, or private insurance eligibility and handle pre-authorisation paperwork. No-cost EMI is available for those who need it. Transparent costs — no hidden charges.
Treatment starts — with allied care alongside
Once treatment begins, a dietitian, psycho-oncologist, and physiotherapist are available alongside your oncologist. Side effects from tablets for breast cancer treatment or from chemotherapy are reviewed at every visit — not left for you to manage alone.

What is breast cancer medicine?
Breast cancer medicine is a broad term for any systemic treatment — meaning treatment that travels through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells anywhere in the body. It includes several categories: chemotherapy (which targets rapidly dividing cells), hormone-blocking therapy (which starves hormone-sensitive tumours of oestrogen or progesterone), targeted therapy (which blocks specific proteins that help cancer cells grow), and immunotherapy (which helps your immune system recognise and attack cancer). Your oncologist will recommend one or more categories based on your tumour's receptor status, stage, and overall health. Not every patient needs all categories.
Is there a breast cancer tablet I can take instead of chemotherapy?
Yes — for some patients, oral tablets are the main form of treatment rather than chemotherapy infusions. Hormone-blocking therapy (for ER/PR-positive cancers) is typically given as a daily tablet taken for five to ten years. Some forms of targeted therapy are also oral tablets. Whether a tablet-based approach is right for you depends on your cancer's receptor profile, stage, and biology — your CION tumor board will review your full pathology report before deciding. Patients who do need chemotherapy usually receive it as an infusion; however, oral chemotherapy forms exist for certain situations too.
How long does breast cancer treatment with medicine last?
Duration varies by treatment category. Chemotherapy is typically given in cycles — often four to eight cycles spread over three to six months. Hormone-blocking therapy (for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer) usually continues for five to ten years because it works silently in the background to reduce the chance of the cancer returning. Targeted therapy duration depends on which specific pathway it addresses and whether it is given alongside other treatments. Your oncologist will map out a clear timeline at your first consultation so you always know where you are in the journey.
Do tablets for breast cancer treatment have side effects?
All breast cancer medicine categories can have side effects, though they differ by type. Chemotherapy commonly causes temporary hair loss, fatigue, nausea, and reduced immunity. Hormone-blocking tablets may cause joint stiffness, hot flushes, and changes in bone density over long-term use. Targeted therapy side effects depend on the specific pathway targeted. Immunotherapy can occasionally trigger immune-related inflammation. CION's allied care team — including a dietitian, psycho-oncologist, and physiotherapist — works alongside your oncologist to actively manage side effects, not just document them. We review your wellbeing at every visit.
Does CION accept Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS or private insurance for breast cancer treatment?
CION Cancer Clinics accepts Aarogyasri (for eligible government beneficiaries in Telangana), CGHS, ECHS/EHS (for defence and state government employees), and most major private insurance policies on a cashless basis. We also offer no-cost EMI options for patients who prefer to spread treatment costs. Our patient-support team will check your eligibility, complete the pre-authorisation paperwork, and explain all costs clearly before treatment begins — no surprises, transparent billing.
How do I know which breast cancer medicine is right for me?
The right choice depends on several test results: your tumour's hormone receptor status (ER, PR), HER2 status, Ki-67 proliferation index, stage, lymph node involvement, and your overall health. At CION, every newly diagnosed patient goes through a tumor board — a meeting of medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists who review your complete report together. You are never given a treatment plan by a single doctor alone. The board reaches a consensus recommendation, then a senior oncologist explains it to you personally in a 45-minute consultation. You decide when you feel ready.
