Which Doctor should you see for a Breast Lump?
Most breast lumps are not cancer. What settles it is an examination, a scan, and a sample if the scan calls for one — and several kinds of doctor can set that in motion.

The short answer
Start with a Breast Surgeon — or a Gynaecologist who will send you for a scan.
Both routes work. What matters is that the visit ends with imaging arranged rather than a date to come back.
What you do not need is a Medical or Radiation Oncologist
Those two treat a cancer that has already been diagnosed, so at this stage there is nothing for either of them to plan. A breast surgeon is different — that is the doctor who finds out what a lump is.
The title on the door matters less than the plan
A good visit ends with three things: an examination, a scan booked, and a plan to take a sample if the scan is unclear. Whatever the speciality is called.
Where women actually start, and what happens there
Four common starting points. None of them is a mistake. What differs is what you should ask for before you leave.

Your Gynaecologist
Where most women in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh begin, and a sensible place to start. They examine breasts routinely and will usually send you for an ultrasound or mammogram themselves.
Before you leave, ask“Can you arrange a scan for this, and where do I go if it shows something?”
Also common
Your Family Doctor or Physician
Convenient and close to home, and often the fastest appointment you can get. A physician can examine you and request imaging, then refer onward if needed.
Before you leave, ask“Should I have a scan before we try anything else?”
The most direct route
A Breast Surgeon or Surgical Oncologist
The shortest path, because this is the doctor who can examine you, order the right scan and take the sample in one place. You do not need a referral to book one.

Increasingly common
Straight to a Scan Centre
Many women book their own ultrasound after feeling something. Reasonable, and it saves time — but a scan report on its own is not a plan, and it needs a doctor to act on it.
Before you leave, ask“Who should I take this report to, and how soon?”
Notice what is not on this list. A medical oncologist or a radiation oncologist is not where you start. There is nothing for either of them to treat until a diagnosis exists. If you have been sent to one before any sample was taken, ask what the plan is — the order is usually the other way round.

What should happen at that first visit
Whoever you see, these three things are how a lump gets sorted out. They may not all happen on the same day, but all three should be planned.

Step oneAn examinationThe doctor feels the lump and the area under your arm. They will ask how long it has been there, and whether it changes with your periods. This is where the plan starts, not where it ends. -
Step twoA scanAn ultrasound if you are younger, a mammogram as well if you are older, and sometimes both. This is the step that most often gets skipped, and it is the one worth insisting on. What a mammogram involves → -

If you are told to wait and come back later, ask for a scan before you agree. Waiting is sometimes exactly right — many lumps change with the monthly cycle and settle on their own. But waiting is a decision that should be made after a scan, not instead of one. Asking for imaging is a reasonable request and no doctor will mind it.

Waiting can be the right call, but only after a scan. Many lumps change with the monthly cycle and settle by themselves, which is why doctors sometimes suggest reviewing in a few weeks.
What to ask: for an ultrasound or a mammogram before the waiting period starts, so the wait is based on something. If the lump is hard, fixed, growing, or you are past menopause, say so — those change the answer.

Bring it in rather than starting again. A surgical oncologist can tell you whether it answers the question, or whether a sample is the next step. You will not repeat tests unnecessarily.

Why it matters
The single most useful thing you can bring. How long a lump has been there, and whether it has changed, tells a doctor more than almost anything else at a first visit.
What helps: a rough date is fine — “around Diwali” is genuinely useful. Note whether it has grown, stayed the same, or comes and goes with your periods.
