About lymphoma
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, broadly divided into Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin types. It commonly presents with painless lymph-node swelling. Many lymphomas respond very well to chemotherapy and immunotherapy, with radiation used in selected situations.
Who is at higher risk
- Weakened immunity (medication or disease related)
- Certain infections (EBV, H. pylori, HIV)
- Autoimmune disease

- Family history (small increase)

How it’s diagnosed
An excision or core biopsy of the enlarged node gives the precise subtype. PET-CT is the standard staging scan and is also used to assess treatment response.

1Is a swollen lymph node usually lymphoma?
No — infections are by far the commonest cause. A node that stays enlarged beyond 3-4 weeks, keeps growing, or is accompanied by fever, sweats, or weight loss should be biopsied.
2Why is PET-CT repeated during treatment?
An interim PET-CT shows how well the lymphoma is responding, allowing the team to intensify or de-escalate the remaining cycles.
3Can lymphoma be cured?
Several lymphoma subtypes, including Hodgkin lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, are treated with curative intent. Your oncologist will explain the outlook for your specific subtype.
