About skin cancer
Skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Most are linked to ultraviolet exposure and are highly curable when treated early. Surgery is the primary treatment; advanced cases may need radiation, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.
Signs to watch for
A new growth or sore that does not heal
A mole changing in size, shape, or colour
A pearly or waxy bump
A flat, scaly, crusted patch
A dark streak under a nail
Itching or bleeding from a skin lesion
Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.
Who is at higher risk
Cumulative sun (UV) exposure
Fair skin that burns easily
Many or atypical moles
Family or personal history of skin cancer
Weakened immune system
Chronic non-healing wounds or scars
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
Dermatological examination with dermoscopy is followed by a biopsy of the suspicious lesion. Melanomas are staged with sentinel-node assessment and imaging as indicated.
Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team at CION Ameerpet.

Treat cancer with medicines, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy.
Use the ABCDE rule — Asymmetry, irregular Border, multiple Colours, Diameter above 6 mm, and Evolution (change). Any changing mole warrants a skin check.
2Is skin cancer common in Indian skin?
It is less common than in fair-skinned populations but does occur, often diagnosed late because awareness is low. Non-healing ulcers and changing moles should always be examined.
3Does a skin biopsy spread cancer?
No — biopsy is the standard, safe way to diagnose skin cancer and does not cause spread.
