About rectal cancer
Rectal cancer occurs in the last portion of the large bowel. Who is at higher risk
- Age above 50
- Polyps and inflammatory bowel disease

How it’s diagnosed
Digital rectal examination and colonoscopy with biopsy establish the diagnosis. Pelvic MRI defines local extent; CT and PET-CT check for spread before planning treatment.

1Can the anal sphincter be saved?
Often, yes — especially when radiation and chemotherapy are given first to shrink the tumour. The feasibility depends on how close the tumour is to the sphincter.
2Why is radiation given before rectal surgery?
Pre-operative chemo-radiation lowers the chance of the cancer returning in the pelvis and can downsize the tumour, making a better operation possible.
3How is rectal cancer different from piles?
Both can bleed, which is why persistent bleeding needs examination. A simple proctoscopy or colonoscopy distinguishes the two reliably.
