Tongue cancer is treatable, and the plan matters. At CION Cancer Clinics, surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists decide your care together — surgery, reconstruction, chemoradiation, or immunotherapy — so you get the right treatment, not unnecessary tests. We walk this journey with you.
Tongue cancer is a type of oral cancer that begins in the cells of the tongue. Most cases are squamous cell carcinoma and are linked to tobacco, areca nut (supari), and alcohol use. Caught early, it is highly treatable — which is why a clear plan matters more than rushing into oral cancer treatment in Hyderabad.
One team, one plan — at CION Cancer Clinics, surgical, medical, and radiation oral cancer specialists review your case together in a tumor board. You get a 45-minute detailed consultation, transparent costs, and decisions made for healing, not billing. No unnecessary tests, ever.
India accounts for roughly one-third of the world's oral cancer cases, and the tongue is one of the most common sites. Most tongue cancers are driven by tobacco and areca-nut use, and a sore or ulcer that does not heal within three weeks should always be evaluated. Source: ICMR/NCRP.

Start Your Story. Book Free Consultation.Yes. Tongue cancer is treatable, and outcomes are best when treatment starts early. At CION Cancer Clinics in Hyderabad, a tumor board of surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists reviews every patient and plans care together — surgery, neck dissection, reconstruction, chemoradiation, or immunotherapy as the stage requires. Care is delivered across our Telangana and Andhra Pradesh centres.
Treatment depends on the stage. Early tongue cancer is usually treated with surgery (partial glossectomy), often with neck dissection. Advanced disease may add free-flap reconstruction, radiation therapy, concurrent chemoradiation, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. Your tumor board decides the right combination so you avoid unnecessary tests and treatment.
Diagnosis begins with a clinical examination of the tongue and neck, followed by a biopsy of the suspicious area to confirm cancer. Imaging such as MRI, CT, or PET-CT maps how far the disease has spread and helps stage it. These results guide the tumor board's treatment plan.
It can, depending on how much tissue is removed. Reconstructive surgery and a rehabilitation team — including speech and swallowing therapists and a nutritionist — help restore function after treatment. CION plans surgery to remove the cancer while preserving as much speech and swallowing function as possible.
At CION Cancer Clinics, the 1-year survival rate for oral cancer is 80.0%, compared with a national average of 71.6%* (*1-year survival; source ICMR/NCRP). Survival is strongly linked to the stage at diagnosis, which is why early evaluation matters. Your oncologist will explain what the numbers mean for your specific situation.
See a specialist if you have a tongue ulcer or sore that does not heal within three weeks, a persistent lump, a white or red patch, unexplained pain, or difficulty moving the tongue. Early evaluation does not mean you have cancer — but it gives you the best options if you do. CION offers a free first consultation for cancer patients.
