Aarogyasri covers the approved surgery and drug package for skin cancer, but not everything around it. Cosmetic scar revision, a private room upgrade, second-opinion tests at outside labs, and follow-up scans done outside your network hospital are typically not covered under the scheme. Travel, stay and lost wages stay with the family.
What does Aarogyasri not cover in skin cancer treatment?
Aarogyasri pays for the approved surgery, chemotherapy or radiation package under your sanctioned skin cancer treatment. It does not pay for care that sits outside that package.
Cosmetic scar revision after cancer removal surgery or a skin graft is treated as elective, not medical necessity, so it is not covered. A private room upgrade beyond the general ward costs extra. Any scan, blood test or biopsy done at a hospital or lab outside the Aarogyasri network is billed to the family directly, even if the same test is covered inside the network.
What costs will still come out of my pocket?
- Cosmetic scar revisionAny touch-up surgery done purely to improve appearance is self-pay.
- Private room upgradeA single or deluxe room above the general ward is charged separately.
- Second-opinion biopsyA repeat slide read at a private lab before surgery is an optional expense.
- Out-of-network scansFollow-up CT, PET or MRI done outside the treating hospital is not reimbursed.
- Travel, stay and foodTrips from a district or North Andhra Pradesh to Hyderabad are the family's cost.
- Lost wagesAarogyasri pays no compensation for days of work missed during treatment.
Is a second opinion biopsy covered before surgery?
If you or your family want a second pathologist to confirm the biopsy report before agreeing to surgery, that reading is not covered under Aarogyasri. The scheme pays for the diagnostic tests done at the network hospital that led to your approved treatment plan.
A second opinion is not wasted money — it can matter for a diagnosis this serious. But budget for it separately, and ask the network hospital to share your original slides so the second lab does not have to repeat the biopsy itself.
Is this covered under Aarogyasri or not?
| Usually covered | Usually not covered |
|---|---|
| Approved surgery and drug package | Cosmetic scar revision |
| General ward stay | Private or deluxe room upgrade |
| Diagnostic tests at the network hospital | Second-opinion tests at outside labs |
| Follow-up at the treating network hospital | Follow-up scans done outside the network |
| Medicines listed in the sanctioned package | Newer drugs outside that package |
Did you know?
Aarogyasri's package rate is fixed regardless of how many days you actually stay admitted — but travel and lodging for return visits are never part of that rate.

Does Aarogyasri cover travel and stay for a family coming from a Telangana district or North Andhra Pradesh?
No. Aarogyasri pays the hospital directly for your approved skin cancer treatment, but not for travel, food, lodging or lost wages while you travel to Hyderabad for surgery, chemotherapy or follow-up. For families from a district or North Andhra Pradesh, repeat trips can cost more in fare and lost workdays than the medical bill itself. Ask your network hospital whether visits can be spaced out or some follow-up done closer to home.
Is a private room upgrade covered under Aarogyasri?
No. Aarogyasri covers a bed in the general ward at your network hospital. A single, air-conditioned or deluxe room during surgery or chemotherapy admission is charged separately, and you pay the difference yourself. Ask the billing desk for the exact extra cost before choosing a room — it varies by hospital. The room type does not change the surgery or drugs you actually receive.
Is cosmetic scar revision after skin cancer surgery covered?
No. Aarogyasri covers surgery needed to remove the cancer safely, including medically necessary reconstruction like a skin graft. A later procedure done only to improve how the scar looks is considered cosmetic and is not covered. If scarring restricts movement, such as tightness near a joint, ask your surgeon whether that correction counts as functional rather than cosmetic — these are assessed differently by the scheme.
Are follow-up scans done outside the network hospital covered?
No. Follow-up scans and blood tests should be done at the same network hospital that treated you, to stay covered under Aarogyasri. A scan done at a private lab near home instead, even for convenience, is billed to you directly. Always check with the hospital's Aarogyasri desk before booking a follow-up scan elsewhere, so you know in advance whether it counts.
Does Aarogyasri cover lost wages during treatment?
No. Aarogyasri pays the hospital for your approved treatment; it does not compensate you or a caregiver for income lost attending appointments, surgery or chemotherapy. For daily-wage families, this lost income is often the biggest real cost of treatment. Planning appointments around a caregiver's schedule, or shifting simple follow-up to a hospital closer home, can reduce workdays lost over the full course.
What about medicines or tests outside the sanctioned package?
If your oncologist recommends a drug, scan or test outside your sanctioned package — a newer targeted therapy, for instance — you either pay separately or ask the hospital to request a package revision first. Do not start treatment outside the approved package expecting reimbursement later; approvals do not work backward. Confirm with your Aarogyasri coordinator in writing before agreeing to anything outside the package.
