The short answer
How do families from Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda get genetic counselling in Hyderabad?
Usually in one visit, and often as a day trip. The first discussion of the family tree can sometimes be done by phone or video. The counselling session and the blood sample then happen together in Hyderabad, and the result is explained by phone or at a short follow-up. Being close to the city is an advantage, so use it to bring the right people.
Two directions into the city
From Nalgonda, both the Vijayawada highway and the Nagarjuna Sagar road come in on the eastern side, close to CION's L.B. Nagar centre. From Mahbubnagar, the highway enters from the south. Tell the helpline which way you are coming, and they will confirm where the appointment is and whether counselling is held there that day.
Timing it around work
Many families here farm, or have relatives who work in other cities for part of the year. If the person who should be tested is only home for a short time, or cannot leave during sowing or harvest, say so when you call. Appointments can often be planned around it.
Being close to Hyderabad means the first visit can include the relative who matters most.Your situation
Which questions do families from these districts ask most?
Four come up again and again. Each is worth raising in the first conversation.
Marriage between relatives
Marriage within the family is common in some communities here. It raises the chance of certain rare conditions that need a faulty gene from both parents. Most inherited cancer risk comes from a fault in one parent only, so this is a question to raise, not a reason to panic.
A family member who works away
A son in Mumbai or a brother in the Gulf still belongs in the family tree. His history can be shared by phone. If a fault is found, he can usually be tested where he lives.
An elder who remembers the family
Grandparents often know about relatives nobody else remembers, and which of them died young. Their memory can decide whether testing is worth doing at all.
Ask them about
- Brothers and sisters who died young
- Relatives who had two separate cancers
- Any man in the family with breast cancer
Worries about marriage proposals
Families often fear that a result will affect a son's or daughter's marriage. A counsellor can talk through what to share, when and with whom, before anyone is tested. The choice stays with you.

Ask an oncologistStep by step
What does a day trip from Mahbubnagar or Nalgonda look like?
-
Call first with the family history
Describe who had cancer and at roughly what age. The helpline will tell you honestly whether a referral is worth making.
-
Gather the papers the week before
Biopsy reports, discharge summaries and any earlier genetic result. Families who arrive without them often need a second trip.
-
Travel with the relative who had cancer
If they are well enough, they are usually the right person to test first. Bring one other relative who knows the family history on both sides.
-
Counselling, then the sample
The counsellor draws the family tree, explains what a test can and cannot show, and asks for consent. If you go ahead, a single blood sample is usually all that is needed.
-
Home by evening, result later
Results take several weeks. Ask whether they can be explained by phone, with a face-to-face visit kept for when a fault is found.
Before you leave
What should you bring from Mahbubnagar or Nalgonda?

- A list of relatives with cancer, their side of the family and rough ages
- A note of any marriage between relatives in the family
- Your Aarogyasri card or insurance details, if you have them
- Phone numbers of relatives who work in other cities

Side by side
What needs Hyderabad, and what can happen nearer home?
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether your family needs testing. A counsellor who has drawn your family tree answers that, and often the honest answer is no. It also cannot say whether marriage between relatives matters for your family in particular. That depends on which conditions run in it.
It cannot interpret a report you already hold
What your specific variant means is a question for the counsellor who ordered the test. A report from another city or laboratory can usually be reviewed rather than repeated. Bring the full report, not only the summary page.
Who this does not apply to
Most people reading this do not need a genetic test. A single relative diagnosed at an older age, with no pattern of young or rare cancers, rarely justifies one. Testing a tumour to choose a medicine is a different test, covered on the targeted therapy pages.
If you are unsure whether your family history counts, describe it to the helpline before planning the trip.Commonly believed
Four things families tell us, and what is actually true
Chemicals, tobacco and inherited faults are separate questions, and more than one can be true at once. A family pattern of young or repeated cancers is worth checking, whatever else was involved.
No. Marriage between relatives matters mainly for rare conditions that need a fault from both parents. It does not make cancer certain for anyone. Mention it to the counsellor, who will explain whether it matters for your family.
A visit without the reports, or without the right relative, often ends in a second trip. Gather biopsy reports and a list of who had which cancer before you set out.
Not always. In a family with a strong history, relatives may still be watched more closely even when no fault is found. Your counsellor will say which applies to you.
Questions we are asked
Common questions from families in Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda
Can we finish everything in one day from Mahbubnagar?
Usually the counselling and the sample, yes. Leave early, bring every report, and ask for an appointment later in the morning. The result comes weeks later, and can often be explained by phone so that you do not need a second trip.
Which CION centre is easiest to reach from Nalgonda?
Roads from Nalgonda come into the city on the eastern side, near L.B. Nagar, where CION has a centre. Tell the helpline where you are travelling from, and they will confirm which centre your appointment is at and whether counselling is held there that day.
Our parents are cousins. Does that change our cancer risk?
For most inherited cancer risk, not directly. Marriage between relatives mainly raises the chance of rare conditions that need a faulty gene from both parents. A few of those do involve cancer, so mention it to your counsellor, who will tell you whether it matters for your family.
Will a result affect my daughter's marriage?
Only if you choose to share it. A genetic result is private medical information. India has no dedicated law on genetic discrimination, so talk through what to tell, when and to whom with your counsellor before testing, not afterwards.
My son works in another city. Does he need to come?
Not at first. His part of the family history can be shared by phone. If a fault is found and he wants testing, he can usually be tested where he works, using a letter from your counsellor that names the exact change.
Can the blood sample be taken in Mahbubnagar or Nalgonda?
Sometimes. Some laboratories collect samples in district towns and courier them to the city. Because the journey from these districts is short, many families simply give the sample on the counselling day. Ask the helpline which is simpler for you.
Does Aarogyasri cover genetic counselling or testing?
Stand-alone counselling and risk testing are often not covered, because Aarogyasri is built around treatment. Screening and treatment that follow a result may be. Rules change, so ask the scheme desk before the visit, or ask the helpline what currently applies at CION.
