CION Cancer Clinics
What colon cancer costs at each stage | CION Cancer Clinics
The stage decides what treatment you need, and that decides the bill. Stage 1 is usually one operation. Stage 3 adds months of chemotherapy. Stage 4 adds drugs priced per cycle and sometimes liver surgery. This page lays out which treatments each stage usually needs, gives indicative Hyderabad ranges for each, and shows how to turn those ranges into a written estimate for your own case. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer
Why does the stage change the bill so much?
The stage decides how many kinds of treatment you need, and that is what moves the total. An early cancer removed in one operation costs a fraction of a cancer that needs surgery, months of chemotherapy and then further drugs. The stage is a description of how far the cancer has grown, from a small growth in the inner lining to spread in distant organs.
Three things the stage decides
First, whether surgery alone is enough or chemotherapy follows it. Second, whether extra tests such as molecular profiling are needed to choose a drug. Third, how long treatment runs. A stage 1 journey can be over within weeks of diagnosis. A stage 4 journey can run for years, with drugs that are priced per cycle and repeat.
What stays the same at every stage
The diagnosis costs roughly the same whatever the result. Everyone has a colonoscopy with biopsy, a staging CT scan and blood tests before the stage is known. Those are the figures on the diagnosis and staging cost page. This page starts after that, when you know your stage and want to know what the treatment ahead is likely to cost.
Every figure here is an indicative Hyderabad range, not a quote. Your written estimate comes from the hospital that will treat you.Indicative cost
What the building blocks cost in Hyderabad
Each stage uses a different set of these blocks. The ranges are 2026 Hyderabad estimates for private care, before any scheme or insurance.
Diagnostic colonoscopy with biopsy
Every stage starts here. Arranged through a diagnostic partner.
Staging CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis
The scan that sets the stage before any treatment is planned.
Laparoscopic colectomy
Keyhole removal of the affected part of the colon at a partner hospital. The main cost in stages 1 to 3.
Adjuvant chemotherapy, full course
FOLFOX or CAPOX after surgery, usual in stage 3 and some stage 2.
Targeted therapy, per cycle
Cetuximab or bevacizumab, mainly in stage 4, repeated each cycle.
Immunotherapy, per cycle
Pembrolizumab for the MSI-high group in stage 4, priced per cycle.
Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. They are not CION's rates and not a quote. Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS and cashless insurance change what you actually pay, often a great deal. Call the helpline for an estimate against your own cover.
Stage by stage
Which blocks does each stage usually need?
These are the usual patterns. Your tumour board may add or drop a block for reasons that belong to your case alone.
Stage 1
The cancer is in the inner layers of the colon wall. For most people the operation is the whole treatment. Chemotherapy is rarely needed, so the bill is diagnosis plus the colectomy plus follow-up.
Usually includes
- Colonoscopy, biopsy and staging CT
- Laparoscopic colectomy
- Follow-up visits and a repeat colonoscopy later
Stage 2
The cancer has grown through the wall but not into the lymph nodes. Surgery is still the main treatment. Whether chemotherapy follows is the stage 2 question, and MSI testing often decides it.
Usually includes
- Everything in stage 1
- MSI or MMR testing on the tumour
- Chemotherapy only if high-risk features are found
Stage 3
Lymph nodes near the colon contain cancer. Surgery is followed by a full course of adjuvant chemotherapy, meaning chemotherapy given to lower the chance of the cancer returning. The drug course can cost as much as the operation.
Usually includes
- Everything in stage 1
- About three to six months of FOLFOX or CAPOX
- Blood tests and a review before every cycle
Stage 4
The cancer has spread to the liver, lungs or lining of the abdomen. Treatment is planned around the spread, so costs vary more here than at any other stage. Some people with liver spread limited to a few areas can still be treated with curative intent, including liver surgery at a partner hospital.
Usually includes
- Molecular profiling: MSI, RAS, BRAF, HER2
- Chemotherapy with targeted therapy or immunotherapy, per cycle
- Liver or lung surgery, ablation or HIPEC, each quoted separately

Getting a real number
How do you turn a range into a written estimate?
Get the stage in writing
Ask for the staging summary after your CT and biopsy. An estimate made before the stage is known is a guess, and it will change.
Ask for the treatment plan as a list
Surgery, chemotherapy, drugs, scans and follow-up, each on its own line. Only then can anyone price it. The tumour board at CION sets this plan before any cost discussion.
Ask what is quoted separately
Stoma supplies, implants, blood products, ICU days beyond the package and the pathology on the removed bowel are the usual extras. Get each one named, even if the figure is approximate.
Check your cover before the first bill
Carry your Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat card, or your insurance policy, to the first visit. Pre-authorisation takes time, and it is far easier before surgery than after.

Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what your treatment will cost. It can only tell you which blocks your stage usually needs and roughly what each block costs in Hyderabad. The hospital that treats you gives the figure that counts, in writing, after the stage and the plan are known.
It cannot tell you what you will pay
The ranges above are private prices before any cover. Under Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat, much of the surgery and chemotherapy can be covered at an empanelled hospital, and with cashless insurance the amount you hand over can be small. The gap between the sticker price and your own cost is often the biggest number on this page, and it is the one we cannot print.
Who this does not apply to
Rectal cancer is priced differently because radiation is often part of the plan, so if your report says rectum, use the rectal cancer pages. Emergency surgery for a blocked bowel, recurrence after earlier treatment and cancers found in people with an inherited syndrome all sit outside these patterns. For those, ask for an estimate built for your case.
If you have a stage and a plan on paper, the helpline can tell you what to ask the hospital for and how CION fits around it.Questions we are asked
Common questions about cost and stage
Is stage 1 colon cancer cheap to treat?
It is the least expensive stage because the operation is usually the whole treatment. The colectomy is still a major cost, and follow-up colonoscopies continue for years. Compared with later stages, though, there is no long drug course, which is what makes stage 1 much lighter on the family.
Does everyone at stage 2 need chemotherapy?
No. Many people with stage 2 colon cancer are treated with surgery alone. Chemotherapy is offered when the tumour has high-risk features, such as growth through the full wall or too few lymph nodes examined. MSI testing can also show when chemotherapy is unlikely to help, which saves both the cost and the side effects.
Why is chemotherapy priced per cycle?
Because the number of cycles is set by your plan and can change. Hospitals price the drug, the chair and the nursing for one visit, and the full course is that figure multiplied by the cycles you actually have. Ask for both numbers, and ask what happens to the price if a cycle is delayed or a dose reduced.
Why is stage 4 so hard to estimate?
Because treatment is tailored to where the cancer has spread and to the tumour's molecular profile. One person has liver surgery with curative intent, another has drugs priced per cycle for a long time, and the costs are very different. A fair estimate for stage 4 is usually given for the first few months, then revised.
Can the stage, and the bill, change after surgery?
Yes. The pathology on the removed bowel and lymph nodes gives the final stage, and it can be higher or lower than the scan suggested. If lymph nodes turn out to contain cancer, a planned surgery-only journey becomes surgery plus chemotherapy. Any estimate made before surgery should be read with that in mind.
Does Aarogyasri cover all four stages?
Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat cover colon cancer surgery and chemotherapy at empanelled hospitals through fixed packages, whatever the stage. What differs is how much of a longer stage 4 journey the packages stretch to, especially for targeted drugs. Ask the scheme desk at the hospital to list what your plan includes.
Is the cheapest quote the safest choice?
Not always. A low quote can leave out implants, ICU days, pathology or the chemotherapy that follows surgery. Compare quotes line by line against the same treatment plan, not by the total alone. The page on comparing quotes shows what to line up.
What does CION itself charge for?
Consultations, second opinions, the tumour board review, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and supportive care happen at CION centres. Colonoscopy, scans, biopsy and surgery are carried out at partner hospitals and diagnostic partners, and are billed by them. The helpline can set out which part of your plan sits where.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
