Did you know?
Thyroid cancer has one of the highest survival rates of any cancer — most differentiated thyroid cancers are cured with surgery alone, and many low-risk cases never need radioactive iodine. Because treatment is usually shorter, the total cost is often lower than patients expect. Source: American Cancer Society / NCCN Thyroid Carcinoma Guidelines.

What drives thyroid cancer treatment cost
The range you see online is wide because thyroid cancer is not one situation. Three things decide what your treatment will actually cost.
1 · Type of surgery
A thyroid lobectomy (removing half the gland) is the lowest-cost option and is enough for many small, low-risk cancers. A total thyroidectomy costs more, and adding a neck dissection for involved lymph nodes raises it further.
2 · Whether you need RAI
Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is used only for selected cancers after surgery. When needed it adds the iodine dose, a short isolation stay and a follow-up scan. Many low-risk papillary cancers skip RAI entirely — so this cost may not apply to you at all.
3 · Diagnosis & follow-up
Pre-operative tests — ultrasound, FNAC, thyroglobulin and TSH bloods — are billed separately from surgery. After a total thyroidectomy you take an inexpensive daily hormone tablet for life, plus periodic blood tests to confirm you stay cancer-free.
Honest costs, led by a thyroid cancer team
You deserve a plan built around your case — not the hospital's billing. Here is what is included when you choose CION.
- Written estimate before treatment — a line-by-line breakdown of surgery, any RAI, hormone replacement and follow-up, with no surprise add-ons.
- Tumour board for every patient — surgical, medical and radiation oncologists decide together, so you only pay for treatment you genuinely need.
- No unnecessary tests, ever — we do not order RAI or scans that the guidelines do not support for your risk level.
- Insurance & government schemes handled — cashless approvals with major insurers and TPAs, plus help with Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and ESI where eligible.
- EMI options — spread the cost of treatment; our patient-services team walks you through the plans at your first visit.

Where the cost actually goes
Thyroid cancer treatment is a sequence. Each step has its own cost, and not every patient needs every step.
Step 1 · Diagnosis
Neck ultrasound, FNAC of the nodule and baseline bloods (thyroglobulin, TSH, calcitonin where indicated) confirm the diagnosis and risk level. These are billed separately from surgery.
Step 2 · Surgery
The main cost. A lobectomy is the lowest, a total thyroidectomy is higher, and a neck dissection for spread to lymph nodes adds to it. The estimate covers surgeon, theatre, anaesthesia and stay.
Step 3 · Radioactive iodine (if needed)
Selected cancers receive RAI after surgery — an iodine dose, a short isolation stay and a follow-up whole-body scan. Many low-risk cases skip this entirely, so the cost may not apply.
Step 4 · Hormone & follow-up
After a total thyroidectomy, a daily levothyroxine tablet replaces the gland for life — a low ongoing cost. Periodic blood tests and occasional scans confirm you remain cancer-free.
Did you know?
For many small, low-risk papillary thyroid cancers, the guidelines now support a thyroid lobectomy instead of removing the whole gland — which can mean a lower-cost surgery and no lifelong hormone tablets. CION decides this through a tumour board, not a one-size-fits-all rule. Source: NCCN / American Thyroid Association management guidelines.
Ways to manage the cost
A diagnosis is stressful enough without payment worries. Here are the options our patient-services team helps you use.
Health insurance & cashless
Most policies cover thyroid surgery, hospital stay and RAI. CION coordinates cashless approvals with major insurers and TPAs on your behalf, and spells out any coverage gaps in advance.
Government schemes
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and ESI may cover part or all of your treatment depending on eligibility. Our team checks which scheme fits your case and helps with the paperwork.
EMI & written estimate
EMI options let you spread the cost. And because you receive a written estimate before treatment starts, you can plan ahead with confidence — the verbal estimate and final bill match.
We walk this journey with you

What is the cost of thyroid cancer treatment in Hyderabad?
It depends on your surgery type and whether you need radioactive iodine. A thyroid lobectomy is usually the lowest cost, a total thyroidectomy sits higher, and adding RAI therapy and follow-up scans increases the total. Most early thyroid cancers are managed with surgery alone, so the cost is lower than many other cancers. CION gives a written estimate before treatment starts so there are no surprises. Use the consultation to get a figure for your exact plan.
How much does a thyroidectomy cost in Hyderabad?
Thyroidectomy cost in Hyderabad varies with the extent of surgery — a hemithyroidectomy (lobectomy) costs less than a total thyroidectomy, and adding a neck dissection for involved lymph nodes raises the price. The published estimate covers the surgeon fee, hospital stay, anaesthesia and theatre charges; pre-operative diagnostics are billed separately. CION provides a line-by-line written estimate before you commit, with no surprise add-ons.
Does radioactive iodine therapy add a lot to the cost?
Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is recommended for some — not all — thyroid cancers after surgery. When it is needed it adds a separate cost for the iodine dose, a short isolation stay and a follow-up whole-body scan. Many low-risk papillary cancers do not need RAI at all. Your tumour board decides whether RAI is justified for your case, and the written estimate spells out the cost only if it applies to you.
Is thyroid cancer treatment covered by health insurance?
Most comprehensive health insurance policies cover thyroid cancer surgery, hospital stay and radioactive iodine therapy. Coverage for newer targeted therapies varies by policy. CION's team helps coordinate cashless approvals with major insurers and TPAs and processes this on your behalf from the first consultation. Government schemes such as Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and ESI may also apply — ask our patient services team which one fits your case.
Why is CION's thyroid cancer cost different from a general hospital?
CION operates as a dedicated cancer super-speciality network with leaner overheads than a general multi-speciality hospital. Decisions are made for healing, not billing, and there are no unnecessary tests. Every patient goes through a tumour board so you only pay for the treatment you actually need. All savings are on the hospital's own charges — never on drug quality or clinical standards.
Are there hidden costs in thyroid cancer treatment at CION?
No. Every patient receives a written treatment plan with a line-by-line cost breakdown before anything starts — covering surgery, any RAI therapy, hormone replacement and follow-up scans. Insurance gaps are spelled out in advance. The verbal estimate and the final bill match, and EMI options are available to help you plan ahead.
Does the cost include lifelong thyroid hormone tablets and follow-up?
After a total thyroidectomy you take a daily thyroid hormone tablet (levothyroxine) for life — this is an inexpensive ongoing cost. Follow-up involves periodic blood tests (thyroglobulin, TSH) and occasional scans to confirm you stay cancer-free. CION explains this long-term, low-cost follow-up at your first consultation so you can budget for the full journey, not just the surgery.
Can I get a free cost estimate before deciding?
Yes. The first consultation at CION is free for all cancer patients and includes a free written second opinion. Bring your ultrasound, FNAC or biopsy reports and our thyroid team will confirm the recommended plan and give you a written cost estimate for it. There is no obligation to start treatment — you can take the estimate away and decide in your own time.
