About stomach cancer
Stomach (gastric) cancer develops in the lining of the stomach, often silently in early stages. Long-standing H. pylori infection, smoking, and high-salt diets contribute to risk. Treatment combines surgery with chemotherapy before and/or after the operation, guided by stage and tumour biology.
Signs to watch for
Persistent indigestion or upper abdominal discomfort
Feeling full after small meals
Nausea or vomiting, sometimes with blood
Difficulty swallowing
Black stools
Unexplained weight loss
Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.
Who is at higher risk
Helicobacter pylori infection
High-salt, smoked, or pickled foods
Smoking
Family history and certain inherited conditions
Previous stomach surgery
Pernicious anaemia
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
Upper GI endoscopy with biopsy confirms the diagnosis. CT and PET-CT, and sometimes staging laparoscopy, determine the extent before a treatment plan is finalised.
Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team in Vizag.

Treat cancer with medicines, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy.
Most gastritis is benign, but persistent symptoms despite treatment — especially after 40, or with alarm signs like weight loss or black stools — warrant an endoscopy.
2Can I eat normally after stomach surgery?
Eating patterns change after gastrectomy — smaller, more frequent meals. Most patients adapt well with dietician support, which is part of our care plan.
3Does H. pylori treatment prevent cancer?
Eradicating H. pylori reduces long-term gastric cancer risk, particularly when treated before pre-cancerous changes develop.
