A biopsy is the test that gives a certain answer — whether a lump, shadow or abnormal area is cancer, and if it is, exactly which type. Been advised a biopsy? Start here. We'll explain the procedure, arrange it at a centre near you, and go through the report with you afterwards — without rushing you.

Scans and blood tests can show that something is there. Only a biopsy can say what it is. A small sample of tissue or cells is taken from the suspicious area and examined under a microscope by a pathologist — and that is what turns a shadow on a scan into a confirmed diagnosis, or rules cancer out altogether.
Most biopsies are short day-care procedures done under local anaesthetic, and most people go home the same day. How the sample is taken depends on where the area sits: a fine needle for a thyroid or neck lump, a core needle for breast tissue, ultrasound or CT guidance for something deeper, an endoscope for the digestive tract, or a small operation when a whole node or lesion needs removing. Your specialist picks the technique that reaches the area with the least disturbance while still giving the pathologist enough to work with.
At CION, the biopsy, the pathology, the report discussion and the plan that follows all sit with one team. Pick the centre nearest you below and book a free consultation, or call 1800 202 8726.
A biopsy report does far more than answer yes or no. The same sample also tells your team the type of cancer, its grade, and the markers it carries — the details that decide whether surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or targeted treatment is the right first step. That is why a treatment plan waits for the report, and why the wait is worth it.

Seven reasons patients in Hyderabad have their biopsy — and their report read — at CION.
7 cancer centres across Hyderabad — and 35+ across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh — so the sample, the report and the consultation that follows all happen close to home, with less travel at the point you least want it.
FNAC, core needle, image-guided, endoscopic, bone marrow and surgical biopsy — so the technique is chosen for where the lesion actually sits, not for what a centre happens to offer.
Ultrasound-, CT- and MRI-guided sampling with interventional radiology, so deep or small lesions are reached accurately and with as little disturbance to surrounding tissue as possible. No referral needed — book directly or call 1800 202 8726.
Your pathology report is gone through line by line — type, grade, margins, IHC and molecular markers — in plain language, so you understand what it says before any decision is made about treatment.
Meet your team at no cost in an unhurried 45-minute consultation, and get a free second opinion in writing — reviewed by all three specialists. Bring your existing biopsy report and scans; where the original slides or blocks can be obtained, they can be re-examined.
Published pricing with no hidden charges, so you know what the procedure and the pathology work-up will cost before you commit. EMI options and insurance/TPA support are available.
The same team that takes the sample plans what follows. Your report is reviewed by all three specialists together as a tumour board, against internationally recognised NCCN and ESMO guidelines — so you get one clear plan, not several opinions to weigh on your own.
For most people the hardest part of a biopsy is not the procedure. It is the waiting — and then being handed a page of terms that nobody sits down and explains. CION is a dedicated cancer super-speciality network: the biopsy, the pathology, the report discussion and the plan that follows sit with one coordinated team, so tests are not repeated and nobody is left chasing an answer between departments.
And because cancer is all we do — not one department in a general multispecialty hospital — every centre, specialist and process is built around oncology, and reviewed against internationally recognised NCCN and ESMO guidelines.

Bring any scans or reports you already have. Your specialist confirms whether a biopsy is needed, and which type suits the site.
Usually a short day-care procedure under local anaesthetic. You'll be told exactly what to expect beforehand, and most people go home the same day.
The pathologist examines the sample. Your oncologist then goes through the report with you in plain language — type, grade, markers and what each one means.
If it isn't cancer, you'll be told what the finding is and whether any follow-up is needed. If it is, the tumour board agrees a single treatment plan — medical, surgical and radiation oncologists together.

Start Your Story. Book Free Consultation.A biopsy takes a small sample of tissue or cells from the suspicious area so a pathologist can examine it under a microscope. It is the only test that can confirm with certainty whether an area is cancer and, if it is, which type and grade — which is why treatment planning waits for it. Understand the basics →
The main types are FNAC (fine needle), core needle, image-guided biopsy using ultrasound, CT or MRI, endoscopic biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, and surgical or excisional biopsy. Which one suits you depends on where the area sits, how deep it is, and how much tissue the pathologist needs. Compare the types →
Most biopsies are done with local anaesthetic, so you usually feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness or bruising for a day or two afterwards is common. Deeper biopsies and surgical biopsies may be done under sedation or general anaesthetic, so you feel nothing during the procedure.
A routine report is usually ready within a few working days. Reports that need extra work — immunohistochemistry (IHC) or molecular marker testing — take longer, because the lab runs additional tests on the same sample. Your team will tell you the expected date and explain any delay. Waiting for results →
This is one of the most common fears people bring to us, and the evidence does not support it. Biopsies use techniques designed to disturb the area as little as possible, and the information the sample gives is what makes the right treatment possible in the first place. Biopsy myths and facts →
It depends on the type. Some biopsies need no preparation at all; others may require fasting, or pausing blood thinners for a short period. Tell your doctor about every medicine you take, including blood thinners, diabetes medication and supplements — you will be given clear written instructions before the day. How to prepare →
Cost depends on the technique used, whether image guidance is needed, and which additional pathology tests the sample requires. CION uses transparent pricing with no hidden charges, your first consultation is free, and we support EMI and insurance/TPA. Biopsy cost explained →
Yes. CION offers a free written second opinion, reviewed by all three specialists. Bring your report and scans — and, where the original laboratory can release them, the slides or paraffin blocks, so the tissue itself can be re-examined rather than just the wording of the report.
