Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) usually develops in a liver already damaged by hepatitis B or C, alcohol, or fatty liver disease. Treatment depends as much on liver function as on the tumour itself, and options span surgery, ablation, embolisation, and systemic therapy.

About liver cancer
Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) usually develops in a liver already damaged by hepatitis B or C, alcohol, or fatty liver disease. Treatment depends as much on liver function as on the tumour itself, and options span surgery, ablation, embolisation, and systemic therapy.
Signs to watch for
Pain or heaviness in the right upper abdomen
Unexplained weight loss
Loss of appetite
Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice)
Abdominal swelling
Worsening of previously stable liver disease
Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.
Who is at higher risk
Chronic hepatitis B or C infection
Cirrhosis of any cause
Heavy alcohol use
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Aflatoxin exposure
Diabetes and obesity
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
Diagnosis uses triple-phase CT or MRI, the AFP blood marker, and biopsy in selected cases. Assessment of underlying liver function is integral to choosing safe treatment.
Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team in Vizag.

Treat cancer with medicines, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy.
Yes. Periodic ultrasound and AFP testing are recommended for people with chronic hepatitis B or cirrhosis so that tumours are found when they are small and treatable.
2Is biopsy always needed for liver cancer?
Not always — characteristic findings on multi-phase CT/MRI in a cirrhotic liver can be diagnostic. Your team will advise if a biopsy adds value.
3What is TACE?
TACE delivers chemotherapy directly into the artery feeding the tumour and blocks its blood supply. It is used when surgery or ablation is not suitable.
